Acknowledgements:
There are many people who contributed to bringing this book to life.
Firstly a big thank you to my mum whose experiences as a twenty-something year-old living in Warsaw formed the basis of the 1980s backdrop of this book. Her upbringing was so different to my own and I’ve always found it interesting.
Thank you to the team at Aurora Metro – Cheryl, Simon, Andrew, Ellen and Mary, who worked with me through multiple edits to make the story as good as it could be and to help the characters come to life.
Thank you to my first readers, Poppy, Agata, Sally, Nina and Beth, and to everyone who encouraged me to persevere with finishing it, including Suzie, Sophie, Rosie and Deeps (who along with Poppy gave some great cover ideas). It’s been a long but exciting journey.
I am also very grateful for the resources from ITAKA, Poland’s central search and support organisation for missing people, and from the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk. Both helped to add credibility to the events surrounding Adam’s disappearance.
And most of all, thank you to Giles, for everything.
