CHAPTER SEVENHaving given the seamen some orders, the Marquis climbed up the twisting path where he had seen Silva go. As she had, he found it difficult going. The surface was full of sharp stones and, when they moved under his feet, he was in danger of slipping over the edge. When he reached the top, he looked round. To his surprise there was no sign of Silva. He thought that she must have walked towards the bushes which he saw were in blossom. He knew that they would have attracted her and she had certainly not gone in the other direction where there were open fields. He walked slowly over the rough ground where wild flowers were blooming and he thought with a smile that the orchids were very like Silva herself. He had bought a few flowers for her when they had stopped at Marseil
