Episode 7 — The Photograph
Maya couldn't take her eyes off Adrian.
The photograph trembled between her fingers.
Three people stood in front of the old Vale house.
Her mother.
Alexander.
And Adrian.
But the words written beneath them refused to leave her mind.
ONE OF THEM NEVER TOLD THE TRUTH.
“Which one?” Maya asked again.
Adrian remained silent.
“Was it my mother?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“Then was it Alexander?”
Adrian looked away.
That tiny movement told her everything.
“You think it was my father.”
“I didn't say that.”
“You didn't have to.”
Maya stepped closer.
“You knew him. You knew my mother. You were there when he disappeared. And you've spent years looking for me.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Maya, there are things about that night you don't understand.”
“Then explain them.”
“I can't.”
“Can't or won't?”
He looked at her.
“Both.”
Her chest tightened.
She hated how much his words hurt.
They had only known each other for a short time, yet somehow his silence already felt personal.
“You promised my mother you'd protect me,” she said quietly. “But protection isn't the same as keeping me ignorant.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Adrian glanced at the photograph.
“The night your father disappeared, he called me.”
Maya froze.
“You said you weren't there.”
“I wasn't there when he disappeared. But he called me before.”
“What did he say?”
Adrian took a slow breath.
“He told me someone inside the company had discovered where you and your mother were living.”
Maya's blood ran cold.
“What?”
“He said you were in danger.”
“My mother knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't she tell me?”
“Because Alexander made her promise not to.”
Maya stared at him.
“My whole life was built on lies.”
Adrian stepped toward her.
“Your mother was trying to keep you alive.”
“Then why did she leave me with nothing?”
“She left you a chance to find the truth.”
Maya looked down at the photograph.
“What happened after he called you?”
Adrian's face became unreadable.
“I went to meet him.”
“And?”
“He never came.”
“Where did you go?”
“The Vale offices.”
Maya looked at him sharply.
“Why?”
“Because Alexander told me to check his office.”
“What did you find?”
“Nothing.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It didn't to me either.”
Adrian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone.
He opened a photograph.
It showed an old office.
A desk.
A broken lamp.
Papers scattered across the floor.
“This was Alexander's office,” he said.
Maya studied the image.
“Someone searched it.”
“Yes.”
“Looking for what?”
“I don't know.”
She zoomed in on the photograph.
Something caught her eye.
“Wait.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
She pointed at the desk.
“There.”
A small wooden box sat partially hidden beneath a stack of papers.
Maya's breath caught.
“That looks like the box my mother kept.”
Adrian stared at the screen.
“It is.”
Maya looked at him.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“You're telling me my mother had something that belonged to my father, and you never told me?”
“I didn't know she still had it.”
Maya's mind raced.
The box.
The key.
The old house.
The photograph.
Everything seemed connected.
Then she remembered something.
“The key.”
Adrian looked at her hand.
“What about it?”
“The note said, ‘The place we first met.’”
“Yes.”
“But the key doesn't open anything here.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“How do you know?”
“Because I tried it.”
“When?”
“Before we came here.”
He stared at her.
“Where?”
“At the front door.”
Adrian looked toward the old house.
Then he slowly walked back inside.
Maya followed.
They returned to the hallway.
Adrian stopped beside the staircase.
“There was another entrance.”
“Where?”
“Behind the library.”
They walked through a narrow corridor until they reached a room filled with dusty shelves.
Adrian moved several books aside.
A hidden wooden panel appeared.
Maya stared.
“You knew about this?”
“I remembered it.”
He pressed against the panel.
It opened.
Behind it was a small door.
Adrian looked at Maya.
“Try the key.”
Her fingers shook as she inserted the brass key.
It turned.
The door opened.
A cold draft rushed toward them.
Maya stepped inside.
The room was tiny.
There was an old wooden desk, several filing cabinets, and a single chair.
But what caught Maya's attention was the wall.
Hundreds of photographs had been pinned across it.
Her mother.
Alexander.
The Vale family.
And Maya.
Photographs from different years.
Different cities.
Different moments.
Maya's heart stopped.
“Why are there pictures of me?”
Adrian didn't answer.
She turned toward him.
“You said you were looking for me.”
“I was.”
“This isn't looking.”
She pointed at the wall.
“This is watching.”
Adrian's face tightened.
“I didn't take all of those.”
Maya slowly turned back.
“What?”
He walked toward the wall.
“These photographs were taken by different people.”
“How do you know?”
“Because some of them were taken before I knew where you were.”
Maya felt suddenly cold.
“So someone else was tracking me.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
A photograph slipped from the wall and landed on the floor.
Maya picked it up.
It showed her as a teenager.
She was standing outside a school.
Someone had circled her face in red ink.
On the back was a date.
And beneath it, one sentence:
SHE MUST NEVER REMEMBER.
Maya stared at the words.
A strange pain suddenly hit her head.
She dropped the photograph.
“Maya?”
She pressed her hand against her temple.
“I remember…”
“What?”
“A man.”
Adrian moved closer.
“What man?”
“I don't know.”
She closed her eyes.
There was a flash.
A car.
Rain.
Her mother crying.
A man's voice.
And then—
“Run, Maya. Don't look back.”
Her eyes flew open.
Adrian caught her before she fell.
“Maya.”
She looked up at him.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
His hands were around her waist.
Her hands rested against his chest.
She could feel his heartbeat.
Fast.
Almost as fast as hers.
“You're shaking,” he whispered.
“So are you.”
Adrian's eyes dropped briefly to her lips.
Then he pulled away.
“We need to leave.”
Maya frowned.
“Why?”
“Because now I know this room wasn't abandoned.”
He pointed toward the desk.
A fresh cup of coffee sat beside the old files.
Still warm.
Someone had been here.
Recently.
Very recently.
Maya's heart began pounding.
“Adrian…”
“I know.”
A sound came from somewhere upstairs.
A door slammed.
Adrian grabbed her hand.
“Now.”
They hurried toward the hidden entrance.
But before they could reach it, Maya heard something.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Almost amused.
Coming from the hallway.
“Adrian.”
They stopped.
The voice continued.
“You were never supposed to bring her here.”
Maya looked at Adrian.
His face had gone completely pale.
She whispered,
“Who is that?”
Adrian didn't answer.
The man's footsteps came closer.
Then he said the words that made Maya's blood run cold.
“Hello, Maya.”
“I've been waiting for you for twelve years.”
