St George’s Hall was the most splendid building this child ever done seen. As I approached with Lady Alice from Lime Street, its fawn flanks and aspect of sedate grandness minded me of a big old lion resting on his haunches.
Once inside, though, these refinements were scorned by activities more suited to the free-and-easies and laughing-gas parlours of Tithebarn Street. Hectic dealing across gaudy stalls called to mind the money-changers’ tables in the temple of the Lord before Jesus overturned them.
Sight of that red-clad monkey scampering around to the barrel organ’s tune did nothing to bolster my spirits. Little critter done portended calamity once already when I arrived at that first
