Big old building in Rumford Place was an elegant three storey affair with a large central gateway leading to a cobbled courtyard. Near to the waterfront as well as the commercial district, that place was comfortably as grand as the United States Consulate, some small piece up the road in Water Street. Standing on the sidewalk in Rumford Place in the early evening, I turned up the collar of my reefer coat as a fresh gust swept off the Mersey and came hunting through the streets. If nothing else, this exercise allowed me to discard my dress and its cumbersome cage of spring-steel hoops.
