12 RECOLLECTIONS OF A CONFEDERATE GENERAL BY JUBAL DE BROOKE Warwickshire, England, November, 1863. The journey from Liverpool to the country seat of my ancestors at Astrop Castle in Warwickshire illustrated the flux of time in a way that would not have been possible in America. After travelling by steam locomotive through miry canyons of mills and kilns and coal mines, I was presented, at last, with this scene of timeless repose. Until then, I’d felt a shade resentful that Arthur Harrowby had arranged this visit without my knowledge. He was peculiarly determined to re-establish the bonds linking the American and British lines of the de Brooke family. I’d agreed to come out of regard for my friend’s efforts, but having arrived, I felt a rising sense of gratitude for his perseverance.
