LAURA
The beeping sound of the machines rang through my ear as I struggled to draw myself back to reality. It took me a while to adjust to the piercing light that came from above as I could finally see where I was. I was in a hospital.
I was fixed on an IV line with a bandage on my left arm and around my forehead. I held my head that felt so heavy and adjusted to a sitting position while taking a quick look around.
The ward had a very beautiful decoration. Elegant yet simple and it screamed of luxury all around. It had a simple sofa and table at the side and the bed I was lying on was very comfortable with morning sunlight pouring on me from the window by the side.
Just then, a young and handsome doctor walked in with a smile on his face like he knew I had just woken up. His smile was as bright as the morning sun and his name tag read "Dr Charles Abhe."
"Miss, you're alright now. You were involved in an accident and a young gentleman brought you in. He has taken care of everything and apologized for the inconvenience he might have caused by running into you," The doctor said with a smile like he could read all the questions I had in mind.
At his words, I felt a surge of anger within me. That scum, Kyle! Why the hell would he appear after what he did to me. Or was he trying to kill me?
Countless thoughts ran through my head but the headache I had made me push those thoughts to the back of my head.
We weren't acquainted anymore, and I was no longer Mrs. Morrison. It was high time I focused on my life and not on someone who never valued me from the start.
I was given an injection later in the day after I had a sumptuous breakfast that lightened up my mood a little. I had sustained a mild injury during the crash and although it was nothing serious, the doctor insisted that I needed to be observed to avoid complications later on. However, I didn't want to stay alone in the depressing hospital ward so the minute I felt better, I pleaded with him to discharge me.
Eventually, he agreed but just when I was prepared to leave, he called out to me from behind.
"Miss Laura," He started. "The gentleman left you this key. He said it's his way of saying sorry for running into you."
Dr Charles handed over the car keys to me and for a moment I wondered if it had actually been Kyle I saw last night. For all I knew, he was not a gentleman. He was definitely not as considerate nor kind enough to do such a thing.
Whatever the case was, I didn't want to have anything tying me to Kyle and so I refused the key before leaving immediately for the nearest subway station.
It was already 1 p.m. when I arrived at the subway and I was lucky to meet the next train leaving for Beverly Hills. Leaving home for Downey about two years ago had been an exciting adventure and so, I never imagined going back in this sort of way. The journey back to Beverly Hills was supposed to take about an hour and I leaned back, exhausted as memories of my bad decision a year ago resurfaced in my mind.
"The last daughter of the greatest Alpha in the North deserves only the best. There's no one more suited to be with you."
"You can't reject Damian because you don't love him, Laura. You know that all this is for your good."
“Little sister unless you show Dad you’re mature enough to make your own decisions, he’ll never take you seriously.”
My head buzzed with several voices. I could still remember the events of that year like it was yesterday. As the last daughter of Alpha Blackwood, I was pretty much pampered. My father was the Alpha of the most prestigious pack in Beverly Hills and all the North. Ever since I turned nineteen, he had obsessed over finding me a mate worthy of the Blackwood name. However, I had no interest in men, especially not spoiled Alpha brats from lesser packs.
Not until I met him - Alpha Kyle of the Black Fur pack. He was as witty as he was handsome and somehow, I had fallen head over heels in love with him. All my family's attempts to make me see how big of a scumbag he was had been in vain. I had even gone to extreme lengths, disguising myself as a lowly Omega and a worker in a small mall, to make sure he never got insecure about my real status as the daughter of a billionaire Alpha.
But this was how he repaid me.
The announcement of our arrival jolted me back to reality and I stepped out of the Subway station. I stared at the familiar road with a smile on my face. Everything still looked exactly how I'd left it.
I took a cab headed for the Blackwood mansion and all the way home, the only thing on my mind was how I was going to survive the rest of the day with my sassy brothers who were definitely going to make fun of me for running back.
The cab screeched to a halt outside the pearl gates and I scowled when I looked up to see Lincoln's piercing sea green eyes searching my face.
"The prodigal daughter returns home at last," He said with a low chuckle
"Lyn," I hissed. "I just got here."
"And I'm wondering what hurricane blew you back,” he smirked, placing a hand on my shoulder.
I frowned at the smug look on his face but before I could complain further, he grabbed me in a bear hug.
"I missed you too, brother,” I muttered, throwing my arms around him.
He stiffened, awkward as always, and I smiled at his reaction.
"Enough you brat," He hissed. "So why are you back?"
I ignored his question and he pressed on.
"Your knight in shining armor turned out to be scum, eh?" He whispered in my ears.
I would have struck him hard across the face, if not that when I looked up again, I saw my father, Alpha Blackwood standing in the doorway with a smile plastered across his face.
At that moment, I forgot about our little squabble before my rebellion and I dumped my bags on the floor before running up to meet him.
"I'm sorry, Dad," I sobbed in his arms. "You were right about Kyle all along."
"Daddy's always right," He muttered and planted a kiss on my forehead. "Should have crushed his company totally when I had the chance!"
I smiled and disengaged the hug.
"And Arthur?" I frowned. "I haven't seen him around."
"He's never around these days," Father said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "Come inside, Laura. We have a lot to talk about."
The way he glared at me told me it was serious business and I swallowed hard as we made our way to the living room. We settled on the sofa together and he cleared his throat.
"You're young and beautiful," He started. "Every man will be proud to have a daughter like you."
I heaved a deep sigh, as I could tell where he was heading.
"But I need you to be of more value to yourself," He continued. "To your family, and to your pack."
"Father, if this is about the arranged marriage to Alpha Damon, I made it clear that year I wasn't interested in him and - "
"I'm not concerned about your love life, Laura," Father cut in. "I have a new project that I want you to work on."
"A project?" I muttered.
"Yes," He affirmed. "A week ago, the CEO of one of my companies, BIZZARE was involved in a ghastly accident. He passed away, sadly and I need a replacement."
"No way," I gasped. "You're saying - "
"You're long overdue, Laura," He said with a nod. "It's high time you took your place in the family business."
He handed some documents over to me.
"You'll be having a board meeting with key employees and investors from a private firm in less than a week. These are the names and photos of everyone expected to be there."
My eyes scanned the content of the documents, and when I saw the name and photo at the bottom of the list, I gasped in shock.
"MANDY RIVERS - Vice PRESIDENT, BIZZARE."
My best friend, and the same person that had stolen my husband was the acting CEO of my new company. This was going to be interesting. I thought, as a smile spread across my face.
