Chapter 5: Kyle's Interference

1190 Words
Kaden The rain tapped lightly against my office window and I sat behind my desk reviewing site reports for the new project when the door to my office burst open. I didn’t need to look up as only one person was audacious enough to invite himself in. “Kyle,” I said calmly without looking up. "What brings you here so early?" “You smug bastard,” he spat out in disdain. I finally raised my gaze from the files to meet his eyes filled with unreserved hatred. Leaning back in my chair, I studied him in silence as he moved lazily toward the leather sofa by the side of the office and sank into it like he owned the place. “Do you really think landing that investment guarantees a successful project?” he asked with mockery evident in his tone. "What do you want?" I asked sharply. Nothing good could come out from Kyle especially after he had been desperate since losing the investment. “Twenty billion dollars.” I raised a brow, the corners of my lips twitching into a slow and amused smile. Was he insane? Who the hell walks in and demands twenty billion like he’s asking for pocket change? “My company’s in a bit of a crisis,” he went on shamelessly. “And since it still technically belongs to the family, I figured you'd help out. I mean, you wouldn’t want to watch the company go bankrupt, would you?” Still the same old Kyle- entitled, manipulative, and drowning in his own ego. Even when he was desperate, he couldn’t ask for help like a normal person would. “Oh,” he added smugly as he rose from the couch, “do me a favor and double-check your vendors. You never know what surprises your brother might leave behind.” And with that, he walked out as arrogant as ever. I furrowed my brows as I quickly picked up a file that came in early this morning. Just as I suspected. Kyle had bought out my supplier. No wonder the shipment was slashed in half last minute. We'd paid for double what was on the manifest. It was a really calculated move from Kyle and I wasn't prepared for it. I rubbed my brows, already feeling the headache settling in. I couldn’t let Bizarre regret trusting me with their investment. I spent the next hour on damage control. After several back-to-back calls and a few strategic threats, I secured another vendor to replace the compromised one. Delivery was confirmed for the following week and as for the old supplier, I left James, my assistant, to handle the legal consequences of breaching the terms of our contract. By the time I stepped out of my office, the rain had cleared leaving behind a soft chill in the air. The morning sun peeked from behind the windows casting a hazy glow over Beverly Hills. I had one last thing to confirm which was the final government approval. If Bizarre had it, the project launch could go forward on Monday as planned. It took me just over twenty minutes to drive across the city to Bizzare. Amber, Laura’s ever-efficient secretary, greeted me the moment I arrived at the Bizarre headquarters. “The CEO is about to step out,” she said as she led me toward her office. “You can wait if you’d like.” I wandered the hallway with her departure admiring the sweeping view of the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Then came the familiar rhythm of heels clicking against polished marble. I turned, and there she was. Laura Blackwood. Her beige suit hugged her frame perfectly with her coat folded neatly over one arm and a black leather bag in the other. Those six-inch heels highlighted her long legs as she walked towards me. “Good morning, Miss Blackwood,” I greeted, sliding my hands into my pockets with ease. “Morning,” she replied without sparing me a glance. “I’ll be back in a while. You can wait in the office or come back in an hour.” I took a step forward. “It’s quite urgent, so I was wondering if I could join you and discuss it on the way, if it’s convenient.” She narrowed her eyes slightly while staring at me but after a moment she nodded and we both walked towards the elevator. The drive to the restaurant was a quiet one and it took less than ten minutes as she skillfully navigated through the early morning traffic. It was a simple restaurant with a cool and warm atmosphere. We went in and sat by the window and after ordering a simple plate of toast and coffee, she turned to me with an inquisitive look. After a while, I decided to speak up. "There's a little problem at my end." I said lightly after clearing my throat. "What happened. " She asked sharply. I stared into her eyes, and she met my gaze with seriousness. Those beautiful brown eyes drew me in, and for a moment, I couldn’t look away. “The supplier for the materials was changed,” I finally said. “The goods will arrive at a later date.” I noticed her body ease slightly across the table, but her eyes still held daggers. “This is the emergency you spoke of?” she asked, her voice laced with anger. The waiter returned with my toast and coffee. I took a sip and remained silent a moment longer before answering. “The delay means we won’t get clearance until the day after. But I’ve ensured it won’t interfere with the other plans,” I said, keeping my tone even. “Besides, I still need to know if we’re good to go on your end.” She took a few bites of her toast, then looked up at me with calmer eyes. “The government approval came through as expected. We’re set for launch this coming Monday.” I took in a deep breath as relief washed over me. This massive project had started with hurdles but now, everything was finally in motion. Her voice rang out again. “Whatever scheme you’re brewing in that head of yours, kill it. It won’t work.” She leaned back as she stared at me. “If it’s not important, pass it through your assistant. I want minimal interaction with a Morrison as possible. The tricks of people like you... they don’t work on me anymore.” She finished her coffee in one last gulp and stood while adjusting her suit. “Breakfast is on me. Enjoy your meal, I’ll be taking my leave.” “Hold on,” I called out quickly. “My car’s still at your office. I’ll need a ride back.” She turned to face me with a cool gaze. “I’m sure the CEO of GK Global can find a ride if he really wants one. Good day.” With that, she turned on her heel and walked away with a smug smile at the corners of her lips.
