Ray showed up at the law offices of Martin and Evans bright and early on Monday. Lisa sat at the first desk, and gave a cursory good morning then looked away. He approached Fran’s desk. She received him with crossed arms and a scowl. Photos of her haughty cats adorned each corner of her desk amidst piles of paperwork. Their faces reminded him of Fran’s own expression.
“I’m here to see Vaughn.”
“He’s busy right now.”
“This isn’t a request. Please let him know I’m here.”
“C’mon, Kitty. Make it easy on everybody,” said Lisa.
“Kitty?” Ray remembered the texts to and from Kitty on Gary’s phone.
“Yeah, Fran is into cats, so we call her Kitty.”
“Did Gary call you Kitty?”
“Yeah, what of it?”
