The women watched Vaughn stride out of the office. They were familiar with his moods and did not ask questions about when he would be back or where he was going. Fran was expert at deflecting clients who demanded to know when Vaughn could speak with them. As the door clicked shut, they looked at each other.
“What’s going on?” said Lisa.
“Nothing that I’m aware of,” said Fran.
“I wonder if it has to do with Detective Reed.”
“He doesn’t like Reed, that’s for sure. He complained last time the detective was here.”
Fran turned to continue her work.
“He’s been on edge since Gary died.”
“Let me worry about Vaughn.”
“I still care about this practice.”
“With Gary gone, there’s a good chance you might be, too.”
Lisa hated it when Fran growled at her.
“For now, you’re stuck with me.”
