Klaus sighed, putting his arm around paula"I'm exhausted. These interviews are killing me. None of them seem qualified at all ."
Paula rolled her eyes, pushing his arm away. "Stop calling me 'babe', Klaus. And try to look interested. You're the CEO's right-hand man, after all."
Klaus shrugged. "Just trying to lighten the mood, Paula. You know Felix is the one making this process impossible."
Felix spoke up, "Hey, I'm just trying to find the best candidate. And most of them have been everything but subpar."
Paula raised an eyebrow. "Well we wouldn't have to go through all this trouble,if someone didn't keep sleeping with all his good assistants and scaring off the ones with potential"Paula said glaring at Felix.
Felix smirked. "Can't help it if they can't handle me and I also can't help it they all fall for me," Felix shrugged. "I'm irresistible."
Paula threw up her hands. "And what about Kitty Cox? She was a good assistant, but you couldn't keep your hands off her, could you"
Felix chuckled."Kitty? Pfft. She was hot and fun for a while until she got too clingy. I had to let her go."
Paula shook her head. "You're impossible, Felix."
"Enough chatter," Klaus cut in.We've got a schedule to keep," Klaus added, glancing at his watch.
Paula nodded and picked up the telephone. "Julie, please bring in the next one please"
"Yes, ma'am."
Klaus and Felix took their seats at the long, polished table, while Paula shuffled through the stack of resumes on her desk. The three of them sat in silence, bracing themselves for the next candidate
"Miss Cohyen, you're up," Julie said.
"Thank you, ma'am," Cara replied, her voice trembling. She took a deep breath, said a silent prayer, and entered the conference room.
As she stepped inside, the first thing that caught her attention was a familiar, yet unwelcome face. Cara's heart skipped a beat as her eyes locked with the man who had so carelessly splashed mud onto her earlier that day.
Her shock was palpable, and for a moment she simply stood frozen, unable to speak or move. The seconds stretched on, each one a silent accusation against the man she now knew to be the ceo of black wood enterprises.
" Miss Cohyen, please have a seat," Paula said, the hint of a question in her voice as she noticed the palpable tension between Cara and Felix.
Cara took a deep breath, silently chastising herself for her momentary loss of composure.
"Thank you, ma'am," she replied, seating herself with a professional poise that belied the turmoil inside.
Paula glanced at Klaus and Felix, but neither man betrayed any emotion as they waited for the interview to begin.
It says here," Paula began, flipping through Cara's resume, "that you attended the prestigious Trumwald University in New York and graduated at the top of your class. Impressive."
Cara nodded, forcing a slight smile. "Thank you, ma'am. It was a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience."
Felix's eyes narrowed slightly, but he said nothing as Paula continued to probe into Cara's background and qualifications.
"Well done"
"Thank you, ma'am," Cara replied, her voice steady despite the mounting pressure. "While I haven't had the opportunity to work for a major firm, I am confident that my education and skills are more than sufficient for the position."
Paula nodded, but Cara could see the skepticism in her eyes. She knew that the lack of experience would be a major hurdle to overcome.
Felix, sensing Cara's weakness, couldn't resist the opportunity to pounce. "Ah, so you haven't actually done the job before."
"In that case," Felix continued, his voice dripping with condescension, "perhaps you'd like to tell us about your work at the local coffee shop? Or maybe you can explain how babysitting your younger siblings has prepared you for the rigors of a high-powered corporate job?"
Cara's jaw tightened. She could feel her hands trembling, but she refused to let Felix see her discomfort. "While I don't have the kind of experience you're looking for, Mr. Felix, I do believe that my education and transferable skills will allow me to adapt quickly to the demands of the role."
"Hold on, hold on," Klaus interjected, holding up a hand. "Let's not get too worked up here. I mean, come on, we're not doing brain surgery, we're running a business. It's not like we're asking Miss Cohyen to perform a miracle." He smirked. "Unless, of course, you're hiding a few tricks up your sleeve that you haven't mentioned yet."
Cara couldn't help but crack a small smile at Klaus's attempt to diffuse the tension.
Felix, however, was not amused by Klaus's attempt at levity. "I'm glad you find this so entertaining, Klaus. But the fact remains that Miss Cohyen doesn't have the experience we need for this position."
Klaus shrugged, still trying to lighten the mood. "Hey, at least she's not going to pull a 'Kitty' on us, right?" He glanced at Felix with a smirk. "I mean, we all know how that ended"
Paula continued with the interview, shooting Felix a quick, disapproving glance before turning back to Cara. "Miss Cohyen, can you tell us about your experience handling high-stress situations? How do you prioritize tasks and meet deadlines when under pressure?"
Cara paused for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "I have extensive experience in handling high-stress environments. When faced with multiple tasks and deadlines, I prioritize based on importance and urgency, while also keeping in mind the long-term objectives of the project. I believe that effective time management and clear communication are key in ensuring successful outcomes under pressure."
"Well, aren't you a veritable superwoman?" Felix drawled sarcastically, crossing his arms over his chest. "I bet you can leap tall buildings in a single bound, too."
Cara kept her face impassive, refusing to let Felix's words get to her. But inside, she was seething. She had worked hard to get where she was, and she wasn't going to let some arrogant jerk undermine her accomplishments.
Paula continued, unfazed by Felix's interruption. "And what about team management? How do you handle conflicts or differences of opinion within a team?"
Felix leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. "Well, I bet you've got a magic spell for dealing with conflicts, don't you?
Cara could feel his gaze boring into her, but she refused to break her composure. She knew that he was trying to get a reaction out of her, and she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction.
Paula, however, was not amused by Felix's antics. She shot him a warning glance before returning her focus to Cara.
Klaus leaned forward, his expression serious. "Miss Cohyen, we value teamwork and collaboration here at the company. We also believe that healthy competition can spur innovation and growth. How do you handle competition within a team?"
Cara nodded, appreciating the more professional tone of the question. "I believe that competition can be healthy if it is channeled in a constructive manner. I try to foster an environment where different perspectives and ideas are encouraged, and where competition is seen as an opportunity for learning and growth."
Klaus nodded, considering her answer for a moment. "Very good.
Klaus raised an eyebrow. "So you're telling us that you're the Switzerland of the workplace? Neutral, yet somehow in the middle of everything." A small grin played at the corner of his lips as he continued. "You're like the 'Felix Whisperer' of team harmony, aren't you?"
Cara managed a small, polite smile, ignoring the jibe at Felix. "I'm just doing my job, Mr. Jacobs"
Klaus chuckled. "Well, we appreciate your diplomacy. It's a rare trait in this cutthroat industry."
Paula nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Thank you for your honesty, Miss Cohyen. One final question, then: how do you handle criticism?
Cara knew that this was an important question. She thought for a moment before responding. "I believe that criticism can be valuable if it's constructive. If the criticism is aimed at improving my performance or helping me learn, then I try to take it in stride and use it to improve myself."
Paula nodded, making a few final notes on Cara's resume.
After a few more moments of silence, Paula cleared her throat. "Thank you, Miss Cohyen. We appreciate you coming in today, and we will be in touch."
Cara rose from her seat, extending her hand to each of the interviewers. "Thank you for the opportunity, and I look forward to hearing from you."
As Cara turned to leave, Felix couldn't resist one final jab. "Don't get too excited, Miss Cohyen. We still have a lot of candidates to interview."
Cara didn't turn back, but she felt the sting of his words.
Cara stepped outside, exhaling a deep breath as the warmth of the sun hit her skin. She fished her phone out of her purse and dialed Rachel's number.
"Oh my God, Rachel, you won't believe what happened," she blurted out as soon as her friend picked up. "The CEO is that jerk who splashed mud all over me this morning!"
"What?!" Rachel exclaimed, shocked. "Are you serious? Oh my God, Cara, that's insane! How did the interview go?"
Cara groaned. "It was so awkward.
Cara pushed the button on her key fob, hearing the faint honk of her car's horn in response. She sighed as she headed toward her car, still on the phone with Rachel.
"I mean, the other two interviewers were professional, but that black wood guy, he's a total jerk. He kept trying to rattle me, but I didn't let him." She paused, the memory of Felix 's comments still stinging.
"I just don't know how I did. Do you think I have a chance?"
Rachel was quick to reassure her. "Cara, listen to me.
Cara slid into the driver's seat of her car, her phone pressed to her ear as she listened to Rachel's comforting words.
"You're going to be fine, Cara," Rachel said, her voice warm and reassuring. "You're smart, you're capable, and you handled that blackwood guy like a pro. I'm sure the other interviewers saw that, and that's what matters."
Cara leaned back in her seat, her gaze shifting between the road and the phone cradled against her shoulder.
"Thanks Rachel,I needed to hear that"
--------------------A little while later-------------------------
Cara walked into the quiet house, the stillness enveloping her like a heavy blanket. The silence was broken only by the sound of her own footsteps echoing through the empty hallways. But before she had a chance to settle in, a familiar voice called out from the kitchen.
"Hey there, gorgeous," Mike repeated, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "How was your day?"
Cara let out a tired sigh, her shoulders sagging. "It was something, alright."
Mike's brows furrowed with concern. "Oh yeah? What happened?"
"Well, let's just say I ran into a bit of trouble with the Blackwoods," Cara said, her voice flat. "Namely, their spoiled brat of a son, Felix blackwood"
Mike's eyes widened at the mention of the Blackwoods. "The Blackwoods? You're not kidding. That's a big deal, Cara. What exactly happened?"
Cara recounted the story of her encounter with Felix, the irritation evident in her voice. "He was a complete jerk to me. And apparently, because he's the Blackwood heir, I'm just supposed to take it. Like I don't have a right to stand up for myself."
Mike nodded, a frown etching across his face. "That's not right, Cara You need to stop whining, toughen up and stop expecting everyone to treat you like a princess."
Cara felt a surge of frustration at Mike's response. "I'm not whining, Mike. I'm just telling you what happened. And I don't expect everyone to treat me like a princess, I just expect basic respect."
Mike snorted. "Respect? You want respect from some rich kid who's never had to work a day in his life? Please. You're just jealous because he's got more money and power than you'll ever have."
Cara's anger flared at Mike's words. "That's not it at all, Mike. And even if it was, that doesn't give him the right to treat me like dirt. You're supposed to be supporting me, not tearing me down."
Mike shrugged, his expression unrepentant. "I'm just keeping it real, Cara. You need to stop being so sensitive and learn to deal with people who aren't afraid to speak their minds."
Cara's anger flared at Mike's words. "That's not it at all, Mike. And even if it was, that doesn't give him the right to treat me like dirt. You're supposed to be supporting me, not tearing me down."
"Am just saying, Carissa, you need to learn to deal with people like him"
"It's f*****g Cara and how dare you, Mike," Cara spat, her voice low and even. "You have no idea what I'm going through, and yet you always find a way to make it about you."
Mike raised an eyebrow, but Cara didn't give him a chance to respond. She turned on her heel and stormed into the bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
The sound of the door echoed through the house, leaving Mike standing alone in the kitchen, a look of confusion and concern on his face. But Cara didn't care. She was too angry and hurt to deal with him right now. She needed time to cool off and figure out why she was still with someone who constantly belittled her.
