UNCOVERING THE SHADOW

Lisa set her coffee down, staring at the stack of files and notes in front of her. Josh leaned against the edge of her desk, arms crossed, eyes narrowing as he pieced together the puzzle in his mind. “So,” he said finally, voice low, “the second set of footprints in Grant’s house… fresh, right before he was found?” Lisa nodded. “Exactly. Whoever it was left before the police arrived, but after Grant’s last known movements. And the weird thing… the prints aren’t small. Definitely not his, not Nolan’s, not anyone we know.” Josh tilted his head. “You think it was deliberate? Like someone trying to cover their tracks but leaving just enough to be noticed?” Lisa shivered. “I don’t know. But whoever it was… they knew exactly what they were doing. The note is missing. No struggle. No signs of anyone entering or leaving through a window. The footprints are the only clue.” Josh pulled a pen from his pocket and began sketching on a scrap sheet of paper. “Let’s map it out. Grant’s study, the hallways, the stairs. If we can figure out the angle, the stride, maybe we can narrow down who it could be.” Lisa leaned over, her eyes tracing his lines. “It’s like… a ghost walked through the house.” “Exactly,” Josh said, eyes gleaming with that familiar mix of frustration and excitement. “A ghost that knew Grant, knew his habits, and left without a trace except those prints.” Lisa clenched her jaw. “And the more I think about it… the more I realize how personal this feels. Someone didn’t just want him gone—they wanted control over what he left behind. Maybe over me too.” Josh’s hand hovered over the diagram. “You think they were watching you, Lisa?” Her shoulders tensed. “I don’t know… but I can feel it. Whoever took that note—whoever was in that house—they know things. Things about my father. Things about me.” Josh leaned closer, voice quiet. “Then we find them first. Whoever this is, they won’t get the upper hand.” Lisa took a shaky breath, nodding. “But where do we even start? The prints… the missing note… it’s like chasing shadows.” Josh smirked faintly. “Shadows are exactly what we do best.” Lisa glanced at him, half-smile breaking through the tension. “You make it sound easy.” He shrugged. “Easy isn’t part of the plan. Smart is. And we’re smart. Step one: retrace the steps in that house. Step two: figure out who could have been there. Step three… survive whatever comes next.” Lisa shook her head, heart hammering. “It’s terrifying. I feel like I’m being pulled back into something I can’t control.” Josh reached out, touching her arm gently. “You’re not alone. Not now, not ever. We do this together.” She looked into his eyes, drawing strength from his calm. “Okay,” she whispered. “Let’s figure out this footprint… and whoever left it behind.” The office buzzed around them, oblivious to the storm they were unraveling, but for Lisa and Josh, time seemed to narrow down to one point: the study at Grant’s house, and the shadowy figure who had been there before the world knew of his death.
