“So… who did you bring with you?” I asked my mate as I watched him grab one of my bags we were moving to the back cottage. They all seemed like brothers but maybe cousins or just friends. “Hector, my brother, Achilles my cousin, Kane my cousin, Gideon my cousin and Evandar my closest friend.” He told me and then there was something that sparked in that. “You’re Ajax… and you’re all named after old warriors.” I supplied and his eyes went back to me and nodded slowly. “Do you prefer Jax over Ajax?” I asked since he didn’t seem to like introducing himself that way. “I prefer hearing my name from you,” he winked and then looked around again. “Being Ajax is intimidating sometimes for others. When I first came here, it was your mother who called me Jax first, it settled others.” “Why did you come here?” “To get away from my father. He wanted me mated off, I ran, and I hid among some wandering wolves and when your father found me and I was only 2 weeks shy of 18, he invited me here.” “So they knew you were a Blood Alpha?” I asked because they knew what they were inviting in back then. “They knew my name, it was easy to guess who I belonged to after that. They kept me here for two weeks. I saw you a bit, cute little thing running around, playing princess and having fun with your dolls. And then one day, two days after my birthday, you came running up to me, telling me that your wolf wants me, and then you climbed in my lap and I felt it.” He told me and he had a worried look on his face as he told me that. “Then what happened? I don’t even remember that.” I told him and he had a tick in his jaw as he started to grind his teeth. “Your mother heard you, and I told her you were my mate, of course I wasn’t just going to take you as mine, being so young.” He huffed a laugh and then he focused on a wall. “She snatched you from my lap, held you close and told me to leave.” “Just like that?” I asked and he nodded slowly. “I never knew my mother. She and my father were less in love than anyone I’ve ever seen. She left after my brother was born, he’s only 18 months younger than me, so I was under 2 when she left. My father hunted her for leaving and I’ve always heard she’s still alive and hiding. When I met your mom, it was like meeting what I always hoped my mother would be like, she doted on all of you. Your brothers were loved, they were not scared of your father either.” He added and I slowly felt my heart break for what was coming next. “They made you leave.” “Once you were tucked away, with Jude and Max, your mother, father, Wes and Tyler threatened me, to not come back, to forget I ever got to meet you, to leave you alive and well and let you mate with someone else.” He told me simply, not saying what they fully said but skimming over the gist of things. “And… when I was 18?” I asked and he sighed as he looked around the halls. “I tried to come see you. See if it was real, see if you remembered me. Jude caught my scent, raised a high alert, and they made sure to kick me off the land. They told me you wanted nothing to do with me, that you wanted to find someone more suited for you. I let you be after that.” “But you came today?” I asked wondering what that meant. “I saw an interesting invitation… something about you looking for a mate and not just any Alpha. You wanted your mate, a true mate.” He supplied and I nodded. “I came today… because I had hope. Seeing that invitation meant you wanted me, the idea of your real mate and it meant that your parents lied about you not wanting me.” Ajax said it simply as if that lie couldn’t have ruined my entire life, my happiness. “I’m glad you came.” I told him honestly and he smiled as he and I started down the stairs. “You’re meant for me for a reason only the Great Luna knows.” “And she knows all.” He told me with a smile and we headed for the living room where his family and mine were waiting. We walked in and his family was against the back wall, all looking miffed but not being unpleasant unlike my family. “If you all are going to be rude and glare, maybe I should go with Ajax-“ “I forbid that.” My father spoke clear and loud and I felt my wolf rise to the order. “Let’s get one thing straight. You all knew I had a mate. Yet you said nothing to me. You didn’t let me have a choice, and you were going to try and pawn me off on any Alpha that could please me. You all knew I wanted my mate, the one made for me, and yet you lied. I am staying here for a month for my protection and because you all are worried. If I want to go and live with my mate and sentence myself to death, I have the right to do so. Ajax won’t hurt me-“ “Regina, darling, please-“ I heard my mother sigh out as if this was just a tantrum. “You all could have doomed me to be half a person and you’re acting like this is nothing more than me not getting my way. If Tyler’s mate ran from him… what would you do?” There was nothing but silence and I was feeling as though they had slashed my heart. “Maybe I should just go.” I whispered and turned to see Ajax looking lost for words but he held his hand out for comfort and I took it with no hesitation, the touch of my mate took some pain away and I knew there was no horrible blood bath intentions for me from him. He was what he was supposed to be… my safe haven. I gave his hand a tug to show I wanted to leave the room. “Gideon.” Ajax called and then I heard feet moving and then more chairs and such were being moved and more feet followed us. “If they can’t try… I don’t want to wait too long.” I told him as we walked out to the back path. “What does that mean?” He asked me and I gulped, here goes my blind trust. “If they keep treating you like a man who has already killed me, we leave in a week. You’ll take me with you, some of my things. I’ll tell them that they’ve forced my hand. I bow to no one and while they’re my family they have no right to treat my mate like he’s nothing.” I felt the wolf inside perk up, the intent behind my words were a threat to leave not to harm and he stayed quiet as we kept our stroll to the back cottage. Once we were there I grabbed the keys from the hook and unlocked the door. We had some people stay a couple months ago but since there wasn’t anyone in or out cleaning it. “Regina…” I heard Wes call and I worked my jaw before going towards him. He had stopped at the front door and he gave me a smile as I crossed my arms. “Looks like you get to play Cinderella after all.” He winked and I rolled my eyes. “I won’t be the jerk who warns you away… that’s Ty’s job. My job is going to be making sure you have a brother to talk to about anyone, mom or dad, or our other brothers. I always wanted you happy dear baby sister.” Now he was laying it on thick. Whenever I was in trouble and he came to comfort me he would call me that, it was still working too. “Wes-“ “It’s ok. Maybe you have this time to set our fears aside… and when you leave with him I want to be the first to visit. You know how you love to order me around when you redecorate.” He winked again and then spied something over my shoulder and he turned red and then looked away. “Be happy.” He kissed my forehead and smiled as he backed away and while Ajax’s brother and friends were outside, none made a move to join us. “Scream if you need us.” Tyler glared over my shoulder, at my mate since he was the only one that had looked around the place. He rolled his eyes and shook his head when he noticed I was glaring back at him and I rolled my eyes when he turned to leave. My dad and Wes stayed and I saw no sign of my mother making it out to join us. “We’re a howl away Ajax.” One of his guys said and I noticed them also ready to leave. “Oh… I would like to at least know which one of you is which.” I stepped out and looked at his small pack of people and they smiled slowly as my mate cupped my hip. “My brother, Hector.” I nodded to the one that looked least like him. Ajax had dark hair and green eyes while Hector has red hair and blue eyes, the typical human ginger you don’t see in many wolves. “Nice to see you Ms. Regina.” He and I shook hands and he looked to his cousins. “I’m Gideon, my brothers Kane and Achilles.” He nodded to the two who flanked him now and they all had the same strong jaw, brown hair and grey eyes. All about the same height and build… all strong and capable. I saw Wes eyeing one, again. And I was sure it was Kane who eyed him back. “And my closest friend Evandar.” I moved to smile at the man rolling his eyes. “Please just Evan. He’s the only one who likes to call me the whole thing.” He told me and I nodded slowly. “It’s nice to meet all of you… while my family isn’t inviting I hope you find rooms comfortable for you.” I saw their shock as I invited them to stay in packlands. But they were his family… was I supposed to kick them out when they will be my family? “Absolutely not-“ “Settled. If they aren’t welcomed to stay then we all shall leave tonight.” I cut my father off again and I heard my mother call his name, and I crossed my arms. She was close enough to hear but not wanting to seem supportive. Makes sense. “We will keep them close by, in case anyone needs anything we will all be on the top floor.” My father decided and I could see it was more than being helpful. It was to keep an eye on them. If that is what it took. If trust needed to be earned in this way… fine. But this wouldn’t be for too long, my father was already plotting against this, I could see it in his face. The moment they hurt someone in Ajax’s circle we would be gone.
