POV Tessa
It has been two months since I shifted on my 16th birthday. That night, after shifting back into human form, I immediately noticed that my neck was completely healed. I returned to school later that week but delayed my return to training so it didn’t seem odd based on the injury I received. Back at training it was hard at first to blend in and pass off like I didn’t have a wolf. I had to learn quickly what is supposed to be normal strength for my age and with no wolf. Unfortunately, my sparring partner suffered a broken wrist during this self-enlightenment stage.
Since my shift, I have discovered many new abilities. Abilities that I would deem even superior to a regular wolf. At least that is what my dad tells me. Every time I discover something new, I let him know and he advises me. He has yet to find anything in the pack’s archives or clinic about similar wolves. Both my parents are supportive and very encouraging, but you can clearly tell that my mom is super worried about me being discovered and not accepted by the pack. Or worse, being seen as a threat to the future Alpha, Justin. I would hate for this to negatively impact either of my parents.
I know I am able to heal very fast since I had a neck injury. It even healed to the point that I have no scar. I have super heightened hearing; I can pick up on noises from half a mile away if I concentrate. I can track scents very well and focus on one specific scent even when it is mixed with other scents. For example, I can focus on a group of people and tell you the specific aftershave or perfume that each person uses. I can see very clearly and focus on smaller things in the distance, but my vision is at my best in my wolf form. I can see extremely well in the dark in human form, which is uncommon for normal wolves.
My body has become more toned, and my hair is shinier. I am consuming significantly more calories now that I have my wolf. Shifting into my wolf is demanding on my body. I could only practice shifting in my room so far. I am just itching to find a private place to run and shift in the woods. I need to pay attention to the pack patrols more to know which areas of the forest are empty and at which times so I can venture out to shift.
Who knew that keeping such a secret from my best friends would be so hard? I felt like they could pick up on the changes about me, but I had to make up stories to explain them away. Like yesterday, Ella almost caught me eavesdropping on Justin, our future Alpha, and his future Beta, Marc talking about all the girls they have slept with and was ranking them on their s****l performance. It was disgusting really, neither of them had any self-respect and they are both the future of our pack. Justin is nothing like his dad, Alpha Lorenzo. The Alpha is sweet, caring, compassionate and well, Justin is brooding, hot-headed, and hormonal apparently.
So, I was crossing the school yard to get to one of the outer buildings that hosts classes, and I was walking with Ella. She was talking to me, but I had caught their conversation and when I heard what they were talking about, I listened more in their direction. I was still listening to Ella, which is really impressive in itself if you think about it, but she wasn’t buying it. She asked me if I was okay since my face looked constipated as she described it. I guess I need to work on a poker face when eavesdropping but also listen to someone else at the same time.
I chucked at her silliness and recounted what she had just said to me. She rolled her eyes in irritation but couldn’t say much, since I did recount her exact words. I want to ask my parents their thoughts on sharing my secret with them. I trust them with my life, so I know they will protect my secret at all costs. Later in the week at dinner, my mom prepared spaghetti and meatballs for us. I shoved 12 meatballs on a plate and grabbed a heaping amount of pasta and ladled her homemade tomato sauce on top. My dad chuckled at me as I rushed past him back to the dining table.
“Are you going to eat all of that sweetie? Are you sure you have a wolf and not a tapeworm?” he laughed. I stuck my tongue out at him, “I am a growing woman,” I whined. “Of course, you are.”
My mom smiled and kissed my forehead as she squeezed by me to get back into the kitchen to bring the garlic bread to the table. I let them settle in and enjoy my mom's delicious food. I tried to start the conversation about sharing my secret with Ella and Jonah. I laid out the pros and cons for them while trying to reason that they are my best friends and that they would never betray my trust. Both my parents eyed me with reluctance.
"Well, what if we do a blood oath?” I suggested. They looked at each other thoughtfully now.
A blood oath is a magical pact you make typically between just two people, but I don’t see why we can’t do it for three people, I pondered. To perform a blood oath, we would need a small amount of blood from everyone and a witch to cast a spell on the words that are said out loud during the ritual. It is actually not difficult to do, everyone involved would need to agree to it first, since violating a blood oath is deadly. Witches usually have a sick sense of humor, so the consequence of violating the blood oath is death by blood poisoning. Only the witch that casts the spell can remove it.
“I know that is not too common around here, but if you insist that you want to tell Ella and Jonah, then I don’t see any other way but to do a blood oath,” mom says.
“There is a witch at the hospital in town that I volunteer at that owes me a favor. Let me speak with her first to see if she will do it,” my father added. I clapped my hands excitedly.
“Yeah, thank you, thank you, thank you!” I exclaimed. I devour the rest of my dinner with a smile on my face. I couldn’t wait to share this with them and even show them my wolf. I will be less stressed once I am able to share my secret with my friends.
