POV Tessa
The rest of the weekend flew by. I spent most of my Monday and Tuesday finalizing my birthday dinner menu with my mom and catching up on school assignments, which consisted of Biology, Geometry, History of Werewolves, Health and Science of Werewolves. Our classes are mixed between normal high school courses and werewolf subjects that are important for us to learn before we turn 18. In our world, 18 years old is when you shift for the first time into a werewolf, you essentially become an adult werewolf.
If you're of Alpha blood, you can sometimes shift at an earlier age than most. When you are an adult werewolf, you also have the opportunity to finally meet your mate, which is like the human term soulmate. This is ironic, since for werewolves, our mates are truly the other half of our soul; they complete us. When you get your wolf, you now have the heightened senses to identify your mate. Most werewolves look forward to this moment.
You can identify your mate when you look into their eyes. When your eyes meet, it is like your souls connect and bind together. You then start to feel an instant connection to them, or so I have been told by my parents. I eventually want a mate, but I hope not to find mine until a few years after I turn 18, because I want to focus on my training and become the strongest warrior in the pack. Luckily, I have two years before I turn 18, so I don’t need to worry about mates.
As Wednesday approached, I had become more anxious and had this tingling sensation running up and down my spine since Sunday. I don’t know if I should mention anything to my dad, since he is a doctor. I wondered if I got some nerve damage or something from my injury and it's just now presenting itself. I don’t want to worry him though; he was already so upset from when I was hurt. If I asked my mom, she would immediately run to my dad, so she is out of the question.
It’s 2:30 am on Wednesday morning, and I am not able to sleep any longer. The tingling sensations had gotten worse, and I started to feel hot. “Wonderful, Happy Birthday to me!” I thought. I stepped out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. I flipped the light on but immediately turned them back off. The light felt like it just seared my corneas. I blinked a few times to get the light hallucinations away. I walked over to the sink with my hands stretched out, feeling my way around in the dark. I turned the faucet on and splashed cold water on my face.
“What is going on with me?” I said out loud to myself. I patted my face dry with the hand towel and made my way back to my bedroom and tried to fall back asleep. I tossed and turned for another hour, the tingling sensations had progressively gotten worse. It felt like hundreds of needles were being poked into me. My body ached all over. I felt like my senses had become more heightened. I could see the granular detail of the wood paneling on the walls, I thought I even heard the dripping from our kitchen’s leaky faucet.
I don’t have time to dwell on how this was possible or how this was even happening, as my blood started to feel like it was on fire. Sweat beaded on my forehead and I began to whimper, I bit my bottom lip to keep from screaming. I tried to take a few deep breaths, but my bones felt like they were breaking. I think I am hallucinating, or I can actually hear my bones cracking.
“I can’t shift, can I? I just turned 16.” A scream escaped from my mouth.
Seconds later, both my parents came barreling into my room and took up a defensive stance. They looked wildly around the room for an intruder. After another few seconds, they must have realized it was just me. My dad rushed over to me and kneeled beside my bed. He was running his hand on my sticky forehead.
“Hunny, what is wrong? We heard a scream. Are you okay? You are burning up.” He continued to spew off one question after the other.
I didn’t have time to answer before another scream left my mouth. “Grace, grab some towels and get them wet so we can cool her down.” He looked back at my mother, his eyebrows furrowed with concern.
“I..I..think I am shifting. My bones are break…ing. Wh..why is this happening now?” I tried to speak through clenched teeth from the unbearable pain.
“I don’t know sweetie. I don’t know how that would be possible. If you're shifting, let’s help get the covers off you, you don’t want to be hindered by the blankets.” He began to peel the blankets off me. He helped turn me to my side. “You should be more comfortable shifting this way.”
I am concentrating on breathing in and out, in and out through the pain. I had my eyes squeezed shut tightly. I felt someone place a cold cloth on my forehead and wipe my neck with the cold water. It felt refreshing, a welcome distraction. I kept on whimpering; I could hear my parents' whispering words of encouragement. My bones continue to break, my skin feels like it is being stretched, and I can even feel hair growing across my body. I am not sure how much time has passed since they entered my room. I felt my dad rubbing my side, but it didn’t feel the same as it would have if I had my clothes on.
I finally concentrated on their voices, “Sweetie, it’s okay, you are okay. You are shifted, you can open your eyes.” he encouraged.
I open my right eye and peek around, I immediately notice my hands, or I mean, paws now. My left eye also flies open at the realization that I am now in my wolf form. I make eye contact with my bewildered parents. Everything looks so clear and focused as I shift my view around the room. I immediately pan back to look at my parents' faces, Wait, why do they look so bewildered? I thought. Their eyes are wide as saucers. I can’t ask them what is wrong, since I am in wolf form. Ahhh…but I am a wolf now, so I should be able to mindlink them now.
I focused on their faces and concentrated on sending them a message. I felt an invisible barrier and pushed through. “Mom? Dad? Can you hear me?” If I thought their eyes were wide now, oh man, it looked like they were going to lose their s**t. My mom looked like she was about to faint. “That’s amazing, you can already mindlink with us!” he exclaimed.
“Yo..ur e..y.e.s sweetie, they are bright gold and glowing! Not to mention you're a large wolf, much larger than your dad or I,” she mumbles. I gasped, through mindlink. I am not sure what a surprised face of a wolf is supposed to look like, but that's definitely how my face is right now.
“What does that mean? Are my eyes supposed to be blue like my real eye color?” I said in a panicky tone. Is something wrong with me, I think.
“I don’t know, I have never seen another wolf with your eye color and your mom is right, you're definitely not an omega-size wolf sweetie,” my dad adds.
I jumped off the bed and stretched my paws out in front of me and walked up to my parents. My wolf comes up to my dad's chest and he is about 6’ 3”. I nudged them with my wet nose and rubbed my body all over them, practically knocking them down with my size. We are very close, even though they are not my biological parents.
My mother reaches up to rub my head, “You are beautiful sweetie, go look at yourself in the mirror.”
I walk over to my floor length mirror that is attached to my closet door. I stared at the glowing bright gold orbs in the mirror. This is crazy, it's like I have fireflies for my eyes. My wolf is beautiful, just like my mom said. I am white with gray undertones throughout. I also can’t believe how large my wolf is in comparison to my parents' wolf. I have seen them in wolf form many times and I am sure I would tower over them.
“Sweetie?” My dad tries to get my attention. “I should do some research in the pack archives and the clinic to see if there is any information on someone previously who had similar glowing eyes. I also think right now it would be best if you didn’t tell anyone that you have shifted. It could be dangerous; I don’t want anyone to target you or treat you differently.”
He looks deep in thought, “Heck, you even shifted before Justin, and he is the next Alpha in line. I don’t want him to view you as a threat to the Alpha position.”
My dad makes a good point. I don’t want to be bullied or treated differently for not looking like a normal wolf. I also don’t want to be targeted or attacked because they are scared of not knowing what I fully am or even my power.
“I think it is best to keep it a secret for now, even from my friends,” I mindlinked them. There is still a lot we don’t know about my past, many secrets that need to be uncovered. Little did old me know what the future had in store for me.
