Noel had never hated silence as much as he did right now. The house that he had shared with Luna felt like an empty shell now that she was gone. That irritated him more than he could care to admit.
He sat on the sofa and glared at the wall in front of him as if it would give him reassurance or advice on what to do next.
Noel knew that he had messed up big time.
The fresh image of Luna haunted him over and over again, the way that she had stood in front of him and looked at him as if he were the biggest mistake of her life.
Cursing under his breath, Noel threw the phone across the room and dragged both hands down his tired face.
He knew that people would be talking now, it would be all over social media, and the comments would not be kind to him.
That burned.
Especially when the billionaire in question was Adrian Vale.
Noel grabbed the phone again before he could stop himself.
Another photograph loaded instantly.
Luna stood beside Adrian outside Vale Global, her dark coat wrapped tightly around her, while Adrian stood close beside her, one hand resting confidently against the small of her back as cameras flashed around them.
Noel zoomed in on the picture, his jaw tightening.
She looked calm.
Not hurt.
Not angry.
Calm.
That was what bothered him most.
Because she should have been devastated after everything, she should be back with Noel, or so he thought anyway.
Instead, she looked like she belonged beside someone like Adrian Vale.
The thought twisted something ugly inside his chest.
His thumb moved across the screen again, opening another article.
This one showed the exact moment security had escorted him out of Vale Global earlier that day.
Perfect.
Just what he needed.
The comments underneath made his stomach turn.
Her ex looks unstable.
Imagine cheating on a woman and then watching her end up with Adrian Vale.
She definitely upgraded.
Noel threw the phone down hard enough to make it bounce against the cushions.
“Are you serious, Noel? Why the f**k did you go looking for her?"
Mira’s voice cut sharply through the room.
Noel looked up to find her standing in the kitchen doorway with her arms folded across her chest.
He had not even heard her come in.
Her eyes dropped towards the phone before lifting back to him.
"Why are you here, Mira? I don't remember inviting you." He grumbled.
“You haven't answered my question." Mira snapped back; she did not bother to hide the jealousy in her tone.
Noel exhaled harshly and leaned back against the sofa. “Why are you here?”
Mira let out a bitter laugh. “Nice to see you too.”
He didn’t answer.
Her expression tightened slightly before she walked further into the room, grabbed the remote control from the coffee table and flicked through several news stations talking about Adrian Vale and his new woman. “I thought you might need someone after… all this.”
Noel followed the movement with his eyes before looking away again.
“I’m fine.”
“That’s funny,” Mira replied coolly. “Because you don’t look fine to me, you look like a fool obsessing over some slut that got over her cheating ass partner pretty damn fast.”
Noel rubbed a hand over his jaw. “Can we not do this right now?”
“Do what?”
“This.”
Mira stared at him for a second before shaking her head slowly. “You’re unbelievable.”
Noel frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means you’re sitting here acting as if you are some victim, a pathetic loser.”
His expression hardened instantly. “That’s not what this is.”
“Really?” Mira laughed bitterly. “Because from where I’m standing, you look pretty damn jealous.”
Noel said nothing.
And his silence answered the question for her.
Mira’s face changed immediately.
“Oh my God,” she said quietly. “You know I am right.”
“Shut up, Mira,” he warned, clicking his tongue.
“Then why are you obsessing over every single picture of them together?”
“I’m not obsessing.”
“You went to his office today, Noel.”
His jaw tightened.
Mira stared at him in disbelief. “You actually went there.”
“She’s making a mistake.”
Mira let out a sharp laugh. “And cheating on her wasn’t?”
Noel stood abruptly from the sofa. “I already said I messed up.”
“No,” Mira snapped. “You destroyed everything. There’s a difference.”
Silence filled the room.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Noel looked away first.
Because deep down, he knew she was right.
Mira’s expression hardened further as she studied him. “You’re angry because she’s not falling apart without you. You told me that it was me that you wanted, but you're chasing after her.”
The words landed harder than Noel wanted them to.
“Mira, I said not now.”
“She was supposed to need you,” Mira continued. “But she doesn’t.”
“That’s not—”
“She walked straight into another world, and now you can’t stand it.”
Noel clenched his jaw tightly.
Another world.
That was exactly what it felt like.
Luna, standing beside Adrian Vale, looked wrong and perfect at the same time.
Money.
Power.
Security.
A future bigger than unpaid bills and constant arguments.
Noel hated that thought most of all.
Because Adrian could give her everything.
And Noel suddenly realised he never really had, she was the one who had done so much for him, and what had he done for her?
Mira scoffed softly before grabbing her bag from the counter. “You know what the worst part is?”
Noel didn’t answer.
“She looks happier with him than she ever did with you.”
The room went completely still.
Mira realised instantly she had gone too far.
But the damage was already done.
Noel looked at her slowly, something colder settling into his expression.
“Get out.”
Mira blinked. “Noel—”
“I said get out.”
Mira glared at him. “You are a fool, Noel. You will wake up one day and regret this; you will be a very lonely old man. Don't come running back to me when it all blows up in your face.”
And, with that, Mira left, the door slammed hard behind her.
