Chapter 19 Attached To My Name

1228 Words
"You will stay with me tonight, Luna," Adrian repeated. I stared across the office and frowned. "I'm sorry, but why?" "You heard me." His tone was calm but firm. He looked at me with a gaze that made my heart thump. "You are really used to people obeying your words, aren' t you?" A short laugh escaped me before I could stop it. "This is not negotiable." I stood up straight, my arms folded tightly across my chest. "And, what if I refuse?" Adrian's expression did not shift in the slightest. "You have received a possessive message from a man who just happily caused a scene at my company headquarters, who refuses to accept that your relationship with him is now over, and the press will be all over it." "He is just angry; he will calm down," I argued weakly. "He is losing control; there is a huge difference." Adrian corrected me, still calm. The irritating part was that I knew he was right. I just hated hearing it out loud. "I'd better go, I have work to do," I mumbled. Adrian walked towards his desk, ignoring my words and picked up his phone. "Security has already picked up your things from your place. Everything you will need for the next couple of days is now at mine." My eyes widened. Did I hear that right? "You arranged that without asking me first?" There it was, that faint smirk. "And, would you have said yes if I had asked?" My eyes met his. "No, I would not have. This is ridiculous. I can handle myself." God, this man was infuriating. "You cannot just take over my life because you think you know what is best for me." I clenched my jaw. Adrian raised an eyebrow, and that smirk grew bigger on his face. "I can do whatever I like." The seriousness in his voice knocked me back for a second or two. “I have work to get on with,” I said, turning away from Adrian and making my way out of the door. My phone buzzed with another message. Anonymous. Of course it was. “Him again?” Adrian immediately questioned. I did not bother to reply to him. My eyes stared at the screen. My stomach tightened. You can hide behind him all you want, Luna. It won’t change who you belong to. I will be waiting for you. A cold wave rolled through me. I quickly locked the screen before Adrian could read it, but the damage was already done. He had seen my face lose colour. Without a word, Adrian held his hand out. I frowned. “What?” “Your phone.” “No.” His jaw shifted slightly, irritation flashing across his face. “Luna.” “I said no.” I gripped the phone tighter. “You don’t get to control me either. I am not a child.” For a long moment, silence filled the office. The city lights glowed through the enormous windows behind him, casting sharp shadows across his face. Expensive suit. Perfect posture. Calm expression. Everything about Adrian Vale screamed control. And somehow, that made him even more dangerous than the man sending me threats. Adrian slowly lowered his hand. “Fine. Keep the phone.” “Thank you,” I muttered. “But you are still staying with me tonight.” I let out an exhausted laugh. “Do you ever hear yourself speak?” “Constantly.” “That explains the ego.” The corner of his mouth twitched again. God, I wanted to hate that expression. Instead, my pulse betrayed me every single time. “I’m serious, Adrian. I appreciate the concern, but this—” I gestured between us. “—is insane.” “No,” he said quietly. “What is insane is a man harassing you, showing up at my headquarters, and sending messages that sound increasingly unstable.” I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. Because again… he was right. And I hated that he was right. Adrian stepped closer, stopping just enough to remain respectful. But his presence still wrapped around me completely. “If something happens to you because I allowed you to walk out of here alone,” he said softly, “I will not forgive myself.” The words caught me off guard. Not the command. Not the arrogance. That. For the first time since this conversation started, his voice carried an undercurrent of control. Fear. Real fear. My expression softened before I could stop it. “Why do you even care so much?” Adrian leaned back slightly, his expression unreadable as he watched me. “Because you are attached to my name now.” I frowned. “That sounds incredibly romantic.” “It is not supposed to.” He snapped. Of course it wasn’t. I let out a tired laugh and shook my head. “Right. Silly me for expecting basic human emotion from you.” His jaw tightened slightly at that, but his voice remained calm. “You signed a contract, Luna. Like it or not, your problems now affect me directly.” “There it is,” I muttered. “Business.” I rolled my eyes. “It stopped being personal the moment he showed up at my headquarters.” The irritation inside me flared instantly. “You think this is embarrassing for you?” “I think a man who refuses to accept the end of a relationship is unpredictable,” Adrian corrected smoothly. “And unpredictability becomes a liability very quickly.” A liability. God. Only Adrian Vale could reduce my terrifying ex-boyfriend to a corporate inconvenience. “You really know how to make a girl feel special.” “You are missing the point.” “No, I understand the point perfectly.” I folded my arms tighter across my chest. “You are protecting your reputation. Your company. Your image.” “Luna, I have a meeting I need to go to now. You will be escorted to my apartment by my security. Any questions?” I stared at him in disbelief. “Any questions?” I repeated. “You say that like I have a choice in any of this.” Adrian adjusted the cuff of his sleeve calmly, entirely unbothered by my tone. “You do have a choice.” “Oh really?” “Yes.” His gaze lifted to mine. “You can cooperate willingly, or you can continue arguing while the outcome remains exactly the same.” I glared at him. “Fine, but only for one night.” “Good,” he said simply. God, he was insufferable. I grabbed my bag from the chair beside me with far more force than necessary and headed toward the office door. Adrian moved at the same time, reaching it before I could. Of course he did. His hand rested against the handle as he looked down at me. Even standing this close, his expression remained composed, controlled, perfectly calm. He opened the door, and there stood one of his security guards, a tall, muscly man with grey hair. “Daniel will take you to the apartment and stay with you until my return.” Meanwhile, I felt like I was one more anonymous text away from losing my mind.
