CHAPTER 18Suzy Wentworth waited at the back door of Maude’s house with her hands in the pockets of her jacket Friday morning, the sixth of October. She’d called Throckmorton concerned about something suspicious at Maude’s house. “I was cleaning dead plants out of my garden and saw Maude’s back door hanging open. The sheriff and the cleaning people are done with the house . Nobody else is around. Should I call the police?” she’d said over the phone. “Stay put,” he’d said. “I’ll be right there.” Within a few minutes, Throckmorton had driven over to Maude’s house to find Suzy waiting for him. This might be his last chance to look through the house. The sheriff would declare it a crime scene if anything was out of place. That could put the house off limits for weeks, and it might be months
