Chapter 9: The Weight of Destiny

1839 Words
Sareena’s arrival at the Blackwood Pack had always been shrouded in mystery. Found as an orphan after a rogue attack, no one knew who her parents were or where they had come from. All that was clear was that they had been running from someone—or something. Sareena was special, not just because of her tragic past, but because of what she was: one of the rarest hybrids to exist. She possessed both the power of a wolf and the magic of a witch, a combination thought to be extinct. Her lineage traced back to an ancient coven of witches who had the unique ability to produce hybrids with both powers active. Normally, the offspring of a wolf and a witch would inherit only one side of their heritage, but Sareena was different. She was a living relic of a forgotten time, and her existence was a closely guarded secret. Only Silas and his family knew the truth about Sareena’s abilities. Silas’s grandmother, the matriarch of the Blackwood Pack, had taken Sareena in and raised her alongside Silas and his sister, Emma. She had been adamant that Sareena’s witch side remain hidden from the rest of the pack, knowing the dangers that could arise if her true nature were discovered. Sareena had grown up as one of them, a wolf in the eyes of the pack, but her bond with Silas and his family ran deeper than blood. They were her protectors, her confidants, and her family. Sareena and Silas had always shared a pure and platonic relationship. They were the same age, and their bond was built on trust and mutual understanding. They didn’t need secrecy promises or oaths; it was simply understood that what they shared was safe. Sareena was one of the few people who could see through Silas’s Alpha exterior and reach the man beneath. She knew him better than anyone, and he trusted her implicitly. As they sat together in a cafe Sareena studied Silas for a moment, her sharp eyes narrowing slightly. Then, without warning, her gaze went blank, the deep brown of her irises replaced by a swirling, otherworldly silver. Her witch side had taken control, and when she spoke, her voice carried an echo of power that sent a shiver down Silas’s spine. “Sal,” she said, her tone distant and ethereal, “I see a new tether attached to you. Have you met her?” Silas froze, his amber eyes widening in shock. He had always known Sareena’s abilities were extraordinary, but this was something else entirely. “No,” he admitted, his voice low. “I haven’t met her. I’ve felt her presence, her scent, but I haven’t even seen her face. There’s a problem, though.” Sareena’s silver eyes flickered, and her voice softened as her witch side receded, leaving her fully in control once more. “What is it?” she asked, her brow furrowing with concern. Silas hesitated, the weight of his words heavy on his tongue. “There’s a chance she’s human.” Sareena’s reaction was immediate. Her eyes widened, and she leaned back in her chair as if physically struck by the revelation. “How is that even possible?” she whispered, her voice tinged with disbelief. “This is unheard of—and strictly forbidden. Humans cannot know of our existence. That’s why we’ve put wards in place to keep our true selves hidden from their world. The last war with humans nearly destroyed us all. Witches, wolves, vampires—we were almost wiped out. It took us over a thousand years to rebuild and hide ourselves among them. If humans found out about us again, it would be catastrophic.” Silas nodded, his expression grim. “I know. That’s why I’ve kept this to myself. If anyone found out that my destined mate is human, they would use her against me. She would be in constant danger, and so would the pack. But Sareena… Max is eager to meet her. He believes she’s his strength, not his weakness. And my heart… it pulls toward her. I want to see her, to feel what it’s like to be with my destined mate, even if it’s just for a little while. I want to love someone with my whole heart and be loved in return—not as Silas, the Alpha of the Blackwood Pack, but just as Silas.” Sareena’s expression softened, and she reached out to place a hand on his arm. “Sal, I understand. But you have to think about the consequences. If she’s human, she can’t be part of our world. The risks are too great. Are you prepared to reject her if it comes to that?” Silas looked away, his jaw tightening. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “Max is drawn to her in a way I can’t explain. He believes she’s meant to be ours. But I can’t ignore the danger she would be in—or the danger she could bring to the pack.” Sareena sighed, her eyes filled with sympathy. “This isn’t going to be easy, Sal. Whatever you decide, you need to be careful. If anyone finds out about her, it won’t just be her life at stake—it could be the entire pack’s.” Silas nodded, his mind racing with the weight of his decision. He had always put the pack first, but this was different. This was about his heart, his soul, and the woman who might hold the key to both. For the first time in his life, Silas Blackwood was torn between duty and desire, and he had no idea which path to choose. Sareena leaned back in her chair, her expression thoughtful. “There’s something else,” she said slowly. “If she’s human, she doesn’t even know about our world. The tether between you might be one-sided for now. If that’s the case, you have to be careful not to reveal too much. Humans… they don’t handle the supernatural well. It could break her mind if she’s not prepared.” Silas clenched his fists, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. “So what am I supposed to do? Ignore her? Pretend she doesn’t exist? Max won’t let me. He’s already restless, and the closer I get to her, the harder it is to resist.” Sareena’s gaze softened, and she gave him a small, reassuring smile. “You don’t have to figure it all out right now, Sal. Just… be careful. And remember, you’re not alone in this. I’ll help you however I can.” Silas looked at her, gratitude shining in his eyes. “Thank you, Reena. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Yes you would be lost without me. Silas chuckled, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. “You’re impossible, you know that?” “And you love me for it,” she shot back, standing and pulling him to his feet. “Come on, Sal. Let’s take a break from all this doom and gloom. You’ve got time to figure this out. For now, just breathe.” Silas looked at her, gratitude shining in his amber eyes. “Thank you, Sareena’ They left the cafe together, the city skyline fading in the rearview mirror as Silas drove them to the packhouse. It was Friday, and like most weekends, Silas preferred to spend his time on pack lands, away from the prying eyes of the human world. The packhouse was a sprawling estate nestled deep in the woods, a place where the pack could gather, train, and simply be themselves without the need for masks or pretenses. As they stepped inside, the familiar scent of pine and earth greeted them, along with the comforting hum of pack life. Members milled about, some lounging in the common areas, others preparing for the evening’s activities. The atmosphere was relaxed, a stark contrast to the tension Silas had been carrying all week. Sareena stretched her arms above her head, “Ah, home sweet home. Nothing like pack lands to clear your head, huh?” Silas nodded, “It’s good to be back. The city… it’s suffocating sometimes.” “Tell me about it,” Sareena said, flopping onto one of the oversized couches in the living room. “I don’t know how you do it, Sal. All those meetings, all those humans… It's exhausting just thinking about it.” Silas sat across from her, leaning back and closing his eyes for a moment. “It’s part of the job. But you’re right—this is where I feel most at peace.” Sareena studied him, her expression softening. “You’ve been carrying a lot lately. Not just with the pack, but with this whole mate situation. Have you talked to anyone else about it? Emma? Lucas?” Silas shook his head. “No. Just you. Emma would worry too much, and Lucas… he’s practical. He’d tell me to focus on the pack and forget about her.” “And what do you want to do?” Sareena asked Silas opened his eyes, his gaze meeting hers. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “Part of me wants to find her, to see if she’s everything Max believes she is. But the other part… it’s terrified of what it could mean. For her. For the pack. For me.” Sareena leaned forward, her elbows resting on her knees. “Sal, you’ve spent your entire life putting the pack first. And don’t get me wrong—that’s what makes you a great Alpha. But you’re allowed to want something for yourself too. If she’s your mate, then she’s a part of you. You can’t just ignore that.” Silas sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “I know. But it’s not that simple. If she’s human, she’s vulnerable. And if anyone finds out about her…” “Then we’ll protect her,” Sareena said firmly. “You’re not alone in this, Silas. You’ve got me, Emma, Lucas, and the entire pack behind you. We’ll figure it out together.” Silas looked at her, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Look at you all grown ups talk?” She laughed, leaning back against the couch. “I’ve always been a grown up. You’re just too stubborn to notice.” The sound of laughter and chatter filled the room as more pack members filtered in, the energy of the weekend settling over them like a warm blanket. Silas felt some of the weight lift from his shoulders, the familiar comfort of pack lands and Sareena’s unwavering support giving him a moment of respite. As the evening wore on, Silas found himself relaxing, the tension of the week slowly melting away. For now, though, he allowed himself to simply be—to enjoy the company of his pack, the warmth of the fire, and the quiet reassurance that no matter what happened, he wasn’t alone.
