Episode 2 – The Alpha in the Snow

1555 Words
The world narrowed to the sound of his footsteps. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Each step sank into the snow with an easy, predatory grace. The wind shifted, and his scent rolled over me again—pine, smoke, winter storm. Stronger now. Sharper. It wrapped around my lungs until I couldn’t tell if I was breathing air or just… him. My wolf pressed so hard against my ribs it hurt. Mate. The word echoed inside me, wild and disbelieving. No. That couldn’t be right. The Moon might be cruel, but She wasn’t that cruel. The forest parted fully, and he stepped into the clearing. Kael Blackthorne. Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack. My Alpha. The snowlight caught on the sharp lines of his face, on the dark stubble along his jaw, on the scar that cut through his left eyebrow. His coat hung open despite the cold, the black fabric shifting with each measured breath. Power clung to him like a second skin—heavy, undeniable, pressing against my senses until I wanted to kneel and run at the same time. His eyes found me. Storm-gray. Cold. And then—shocked. He froze. Just… stopped moving. Like the world itself had jerked to a halt. The bond slammed into me a second time, harder, a rush of heat and light and aching need that made my vision blur. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. All I knew was him and the way everything inside me reached for him like I’d been starving my whole life and didn’t realize it until now. His nostrils flared. He inhaled, sharp and deep. I watched the exact moment it hit him—the widening of his pupils, the slight parting of his lips, the way his throat worked as he swallowed hard against something he couldn’t control. His wolf surged behind his eyes. “Mine,” he growled under his breath, so low I almost thought I imagined it. My heart stuttered. “Alpha—” I choked, my voice a broken thing. He moved. Not towards me. Around me. Circling. Slow and lethal, his gaze never leaving my face as he drew closer, his boots barely making a sound in the snow. I felt like prey in a hunter’s sights, pinned by a look I couldn’t escape even if I tried. And I didn’t want to try. Not really. My wolf lowered herself, tail tucked, body trembling—terrified, but also… relieved. Like we had been wrong about being alone all this time. Kael stopped when he was close enough that I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes. I could see every fleck of silver in that storm-gray gaze now. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, chasing away the cold that had seeped into my bones. His voice, when it came, was rougher than I’d ever heard it. “Look at me.” I was already looking. Still, the command sank into me, brushing against my wolf like a warm hand. I swallowed, throat dry. “I—” My tongue felt heavy. “I didn’t mean to leave the grounds, Alpha. I’ll go back, I just—” “That’s not what I asked.” His jaw shifted. “Say it.” I blinked. “Say… what?” He leaned in, just enough that his scent hit me like a physical touch. “What I am to you.” The bond pulsed between us, insistent. My chest ached. “I…” The word burned its way up. “Mate.” Something fierce flashed across his face. Possessive. Hungry. It stole my breath. For a heartbeat, his hand lifted like he was going to touch me—my cheek, my throat, anything. My skin burned in anticipation, desperate for it. Then his fingers curled into a tight fist at his side instead. Reality crashed in. I wasn’t just any she-wolf. I was an omega. A servant. A girl who had been scrubbing floors while his world prepared to celebrate. He realized it too. I watched the exact second recognition settled in his eyes. Not of who I was emotionally. Of what I was. His gaze flicked over my thin, damp uniform, the raw skin on my fingers, the faint bruises peeking out from beneath my sleeves. I saw the muscle in his jaw jump. Saw the way his expression shuttered. The warmth vanished. Cold slammed into its place. “Faye Winters,” he said, voice suddenly unreadable. “Pack orphan. Omega. Servant to the main house.” He knew my file. Of course he did. “Yes, Alpha,” I whispered, every part of me shrinking under the weight of those words. He stepped back. It felt like someone had reached into my chest and ripped something vital out. The bond throbbed in protest, confused. Hurt. His wolf snarled—a sound I wasn’t meant to hear, trapped somewhere behind his ribs—but Kael ignored it. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said curtly. “It’s Solstice. Patrols are light. Rogues roam on nights like this.” “I’m used to being alone,” I said softly before I could stop myself. His eyes flashed. For a breath, he almost looked… guilty. Then it was gone. “Not anymore,” he muttered. Hope flared, bright and blinding. My heart leapt. “You mean—?” “I mean,” he cut in sharply, shutting it down before it could grow, “that until this… complication is handled, you will not leave the grounds without escort. Ever.” Complication. The word hit harder than any slap. I flinched. He noticed. His gaze softened for half a heartbeat, then hardened twice as much. “This changes things,” I whispered, more to myself than to him. “Doesn’t it?” “It changes everything,” he said quietly. “And nothing at all.” I didn’t understand. I wanted to. Desperately. The wind shifted again, carrying the distant echo of drums and laughter from the pack grounds. The celebration was still going. Life was still moving. The world hadn’t stopped just because mine had tilted on its axis. Someone howled in the distance—one of the patrols calling back to the main grounds. Kael dragged a hand through his hair, tension rolling off him in waves. “We’re going back,” he said. “Now.” Panic flared hot in my chest. “We?” I asked, voice barely more than a breath. “If you think I’m letting you walk into a den of hungry wolves alone when you smell like this…” His eyes darkened, jaw clenching. “No. You stay close to me. No one touches you.” My cheeks burned. “No one ever touches me,” I said, the sadness slipping out before I could catch it. His gaze flickered to my throat. To the place a mark would go. A muscle jumped in his jaw again. “Don’t test that,” he said. “Not tonight.” I didn’t know what that meant. I wasn’t sure I wanted to. He turned, motioning for me to follow. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else as I stumbled after him, snow crunching under my boots. Every step hurt and soothed at the same time—the bond pulling me toward him even as something heavier pressed against my chest. Confusion. Hope. Dread. I walked three paces behind him at first, where an omega belonged. “Closer,” he snapped over his shoulder without looking back. I swallowed and moved to his side, my shoulder almost brushing his arm. My heart hammered so hard I was sure he could hear it. The trees thinned as we neared the pack borders again. Lantern light glowed through the branches, warm and distant. The sounds of celebration grew clearer. I hesitated. “What happens now?” I asked quietly. Kael slowed, just for a moment. His profile was set in stone. “Now?” he said, voice low. “Now we pretend nothing has changed until I decide what to do about it.” The words cut. “But the bond—” “The bond,” he said, too calmly, “does not rule this pack. I do.” My wolf whimpered, pressing against my ribs. The snow under my feet suddenly felt treacherous. Before I could respond, a shout went up from near the outer path. “Alpha!” Two warriors appeared, eyes widening as they took in the sight of us together in the snow—Kael striding forward, me at his side, our scents tangled in a way that left no room for misunderstanding. Their gazes snapped to me. Shock. Then disgust. Then calculation. The nearest warrior swallowed. “Alpha… is it true?” Kael didn’t answer. Not yet. His hand brushed my lower back—barely a touch, there and gone so fast I almost thought I imagined it. “Keep walking,” he murmured. My feet obeyed. My heart did not. Because as we stepped fully back into the lantern light, every head began to turn. And deep down, in the place where fear and hope tangled together, I felt it: Whatever Kael decided… Would either save me. Or destroy me.
