Chapter 1 Cheating

2365 Words
A message popped up on my boyfriend Calvin's WeChat. "Hey, thanks for taking me back to the hotel. Did your girlfriend say anything?" I grabbed his phone and quickly replied for him. "Wow, you're so considerate, unlike my girlfriend who only knows how to argue with me." Then I tossed the phone back: "Goodbye, ex-boyfriend." A man who doesn't respect himself is like spoiled milk. Lock it up, you rotten green tea! "What on earth is Calvin doing here?!" On a rare day off, I was humming a tune while making cat food. The ragdoll at home is purebred, even its stomach is as delicate as glass. Regular cat food gives it an upset stomach. I feel like I'm not raising a cat, but a royal ancestor. The WeChat call kept ringing; it was my best friend calling. I picked up the phone, and before I could even say hello, her angry shout almost made me cut my hand. "Where's Calvin?" Listening to her outburst, I recalled the message he left me yesterday, saying he had to go on a business trip for a project and wouldn't be home for the next couple of days. My friend lowered her voice: "Hawaii! I was on vacation with my partner and saw your boyfriend downstairs." I was indifferent: "He's on a business trip, don't make a fuss." I know Calvin's character; we've been together for three years, and he rarely shows any emotion. He always has a poker face. If it weren't for his hard work and reliability, I wouldn't have chosen to get engaged to someone like him. "Is it normal to take a woman on a business trip right after getting engaged?" My friend's voice rose three octaves, "Look at that girl, she's practically clinging to him." Calvin and I have been in love for three years, met each other's parents, and even held a banquet. We've only been engaged for three months. I couldn't believe Calvin would cheat at this time. I couldn't believe it. I didn't speak, and the call went silent. Sensing my disbelief, my friend hung up and sent over a few pictures and a short video. In the video, a girl was holding two drinks, jogging behind Calvin, who was striding ahead. They were dressed lightly, and the girl had a delicate makeup look, with slightly messy hair. "Mr. Cole, your drink." Seeing she was about to fall behind, the girl hurriedly spoke up. Calvin finally turned around: "Thank you." The girl used the opportunity when Calvin turned back to hand him the drink, pretending to lose balance and touching his chest. ... I was speechless. What kind of soap opera is this? It's like a vintage soap opera. I looked carefully at the photos my friend sent. The girl stood beside Calvin, looking quite proper, and I couldn't see any problem. "What do you think, what do you think?" My friend, seeing I hadn't replied, furiously typed to vent her shock. "This girl is obviously an old green tea, her fake charm is suffocating me." "Let's wait until he comes back to talk." I was annoyed, as the video and pictures weren't direct evidence, and I didn't want to wrong Calvin based on them. My friend, however, took it upon herself to keep an eye on Calvin, saying she'd stick to him for the next few days. Just as I put down my phone, my assistant from the company called. "Ms. Moss, regarding the project with Grayshine Ltd, Mr. Lee said he has time for a detailed discussion today." It's a major project in new energy. This company transformation, being able to collaborate with industry giant Grayshine, is the result of nearly a month of effort from the whole company. I took a deep breath to steady myself. "Location?" "Hawaii. The hotel's name and location have been sent to you." The assistant was typing away on the computer, "Your flight is booked for 3:45 PM." There's still time. I checked the time, filled up the cat's food and water, and began changing clothes and reviewing the meeting materials. The project details were already well-rehearsed, and this meeting was just to finalize the closing work. I cleared my throat, packed the essentials, and headed downstairs to catch a cab. Hawaii, what a small world. Although Calvin and I are in the same industry, we're not in the same company. To avoid suspicion, I usually don't inquire about their company's specifics. Why is their company also sending people to Hawaii? At the hotel, my meeting with Mr. Lee went very smoothly. It happened to be mealtime, so we decided to grab a bite at the hotel's restaurant. Mr. Lee chose a window seat, which offered a perfect view of the sea outside. During the meal, I noticed Mr. Lee seemed distracted, frequently glancing out the window. I followed his gaze. "Sorry, the sunlight outside is a bit glaring," Mr. Lee explained to me with a smile. Glaring? I looked at the sunset outside, which was almost touching the sea horizon, its gentle light spreading softly. I couldn't see anything glaring about it. I just smiled and nodded. Just as I was about to turn my gaze back to the table, I caught a glimpse of a particularly familiar figure out of the corner of my eye. Calvin? Calvin was walking hand in hand with a girl along the coastline. Although the girl was unfamiliar, her attire and style were exactly the same as in the previous video. I was momentarily stunned, my mind went blank. Mr. Lee noticed me staring blankly at the crowd below and softly asked, "Ms. Moss, is something wrong?" Startled, I quickly pulled my thoughts back. I coughed awkwardly, "Nothing, just saw someone I know." While making small talk with Mr. Lee, I opened WeChat and bombarded my best friend with messages. I had set my phone to Do Not Disturb mode earlier, but as soon as I opened WeChat, dozens of messages from my best friend flooded in. "Look quickly! Calvin is actually helping her carry her bag! In less than a day, he's been won over by a scheming girl?" My best friend, playing detective, had somehow taken high-definition photos from some hidden corner. In the photos, Calvin looked at the girl beside him with a doting smile I hadn't seen in years. Feeling a knot in my heart, I reminded myself I was with Mr. Lee from Grayshine, quickly turned off my phone, and put on a perfect smile. The project was successfully concluded, and I bid farewell to Mr. Lee, finding an excuse to leave the hotel. There was an event on the beach tonight, and my best friend sent me the event poster. I noticed that at the bottom of the poster, there was an activity where couples could publicly kiss for a minute to get two free ice creams. Could five years of relationship really be ruined over a small ice cream? If it were before, I definitely wouldn't believe it. My relationship with Calvin had been smooth sailing, almost without obstacles. Any unpleasantness was easily resolved through mutual concession, and it hadn't been easy from acquaintance to love. It seemed like our smooth engagement had revealed Calvin's true colors. If it were before, Calvin would never agree to go on a business trip with a woman. Both the photos and videos contradicted my understanding. Deep down, I felt compelled to go to the event. The beach at night was brilliantly lit. It was my first time at the seaside, and the cheers and conversations of people mixed and surged into my ears. Maybe my expression was too out of place, as several people glanced at me before quickly looking away. I ended up buying a drink and sitting in a corner. Looking at the wine glass in my hand, identical to the one in the video, I opened WeChat to contact my best friend. "Do you know that girl?" My best friend replied almost instantly, "Oh, now you remember to ask me? Don't worry, when it comes to gossip, I'm never offline~" I was exasperated. Wow, my best friend is something else, gossiping about her own circle. I sent a rolling eyes emoji. "That scheming girl is an employee of Grayshine. She came to Hawaii with Max from Grayshine this time." I couldn't help but marvel at my best friend's skills, knowing even Mr. Lee's itinerary. Wait, how does my best friend, a beauty blogger, know about the CEO of a new energy company? "How do you know that?" A bad feeling quickly rose within me. "My last name is Lee, and Max's last name is Lee too. Guess what my relationship with my brother is?" I widened my eyes, staring incredulously at the words my friend had typed. Wow, turns out my friend is loaded? "That girl is named Wendy. She originally tried to hook up with my brother and applied for an assistant position at Grayshine Ltd. She didn't pass because she was too flirtatious during the probation period," my friend typed furiously. "Later, she managed to stay on as a clerk through connections. I didn't even know she would be sent to Hawaii this time." I was at a loss for words, staring blankly at the messages in the chat box. Although I avoided asking about Calvin's company to prevent any conflict of interest, Calvin occasionally asked a few questions, and I didn't guard against him. It's very likely he found out about our company's collaboration with Grayshine. And he never mentioned that his company was also transitioning to new energy. Once the seed of doubt is planted, it grows uncontrollably. "Stop chatting, the event is about to start." My friend's words snapped me back to reality. I watched the lively interaction between the host and the crowd on the open-air stage and began searching for Calvin's figure among the people. I didn't dare to stand up high, so I searched through the crowd bit by bit. My friend sent a message saying Calvin and Wendy were next to her and told me to come around from the back of the crowd without alerting them. When I squeezed next to my friend, I saw Calvin and Wendy holding hands and having fun. Calvin rarely smiled around me, yet he was all smiles with Wendy. Looking at Calvin's profile, my heart sank. "Should we go up and expose them now?" My friend pretended to roll up her nonexistent sleeves, ready to rush forward and grab the two. I quickly pulled her back. "Not yet confirmed. I want to capture more direct evidence." "Holding hands isn't evidence enough?" My friend looked at me like she couldn't believe how clueless I was. I calmed my friend down and was about to say something when Wendy spoke up. "Calvin, have you and your girlfriend never been to the beach? She's not romantic at all. If I had such a great boyfriend like you, I would have taken you to the beach long ago." My friend and I were so disgusted by her words that we couldn't speak for a while. Calvin and I grew up inland, so not having been to the beach was entirely normal, wasn't it? Although Calvin was happy, he still remembered to speak up for me: "Megan and I are both busy, so we hardly have time to travel." "You're so considerate to your girlfriend, yet she's busy with work and doesn't accompany you. I'm really envious..." she said, lowering her head, looking exceptionally dejected. Calvin gently stroked Wendy's hair, soothing her, "You'll also find a boyfriend who cares for you and is considerate." His gaze, however, never left Wendy, staring straight at her. And Wendy, as if sensing his gaze, looked up with tearful eyes to meet his. My friend and I gasped from a distance. "Oh my, this is just too much." My friend was so angry she couldn't speak for a while. "I'm so over this drama," I said, staring intently at Calvin, finishing her sentence. In less than half a day, Wendy had gone from calling him Mr. Cole to Calvin. Wendy noticed the engagement ring on Calvin's hand and gently touched it. "Calvin, did you buy this ring? It's so beautiful." A man wearing a ring on his left middle finger, plus knowing he has a girlfriend, and yet she still asked such a question. Calvin showed it to her: "This is my engagement ring with my girlfriend." "Wow, it's really beautiful. Can I take a look?" Calvin looked a bit confused at this point, hadn't she already seen it? Wendy gently placed her hand on the back of Calvin's hand, seemingly wanting to take it off for a closer look. Calvin hesitated for two seconds, yet allowed Wendy to take off the engagement ring. My friend and I were completely taken aback. "How could he let her take off the ring?!" my friend exclaimed, shaking my shoulders in disbelief but keeping her voice low. I was equally stunned. This didn't seem like they had just met at a meeting; it was as if they had known each other for a long time. At that moment, the host announced the start of the activity, and any couple who kissed for more than a minute could get free ice cream. My friend and I tensed up, fearing she might drag Calvin to join in. Sure enough, Wendy pulled Calvin towards the ice cream stand. The closer they got, the more serious I looked. My friend noticed my unease and gently squeezed my hand to comfort me. "Being engaged doesn't mean anything; you can always break it off." Before, I could convince myself it was just a friendly relationship. But this time, I could no longer deceive myself. "Calvin, let's get one too," Wendy said with a naive smile, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him. "This...." Calvin hesitated but didn't refuse Wendy. When Wendy stood on tiptoe to kiss Calvin, I took out my phone without expression and captured this "precious" moment. Then, I pulled my stunned friend away from the scene.
