EPISODE 10: THE WEIGHT OF A CROWN --- The morning sun rose over Tian Du, painting the city in shades of gold and crimson. Chen Chang Sheng stood on the balcony of the Imperial Palace, looking out at the capital that had once seemed so vast and intimidating. Now, it felt like home. The streets were filled with people going about their daily lives—merchants hawking their wares, children laughing, cultivators training in the courtyards. Life had returned to normal. But nothing would ever be normal again. "Brooding again?" Xu You Rong appeared beside him, her hand slipping into his. "I thought you stopped that." "I'm not brooding. I'm thinking." He squeezed her hand. "There's a difference." "Thinking is just brooding with a better vocabulary. You told me that yourself." She smiled. "What's on your mind?" "Everything." He sighed, looking out at the city. "The demon lord is dead. The cult is defeated. The prophecy is fulfilled. But now what? I don't know what I'm supposed to do next." "You're the Dragon King's heir. You have the Dragon's Heart. You have the power to shape the future of the empire." She turned to face him. "That's not nothing, Chen Chang Sheng." "I know. But I don't know how to be a king. I don't know how to lead. I was just a dying boy from the mountains. Now I'm supposed to rule?" "You're not supposed to rule alone. You have us. Your friends. Your allies." She reached up and touched his cheek. "And you have me." He leaned into her touch, closing his eyes. "I don't deserve you." "Stop that." Her voice was firm. "You deserve everything good in this world. You've earned it. Every moment of pain, every sacrifice, every battle—you've earned the right to be happy." "I am happy." He opened his eyes, looking at her. "With you, I'm happy." "Then let's build a future together. A future where we don't have to fight anymore. A future where we can just... be." He smiled, pulling her into an embrace. "I'd like that." --- The first challenge came sooner than expected. Three days after the defeat of the demon lord, a delegation arrived at the palace. They were representatives of the noble families—the same families who had once supported the demon cult, who had turned a blind eye to their atrocities. "Your Highness," the leader of the delegation said, bowing low. "We have come to pledge our allegiance to the new Dragon King." Chen Chang Sheng studied the man. He was tall, well-dressed, with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "You supported the demon cult. You helped them rise to power." "We were misled." The man's voice was smooth, practiced. "We didn't understand the true nature of the threat. Now that you have shown us the light, we wish to atone for our sins." "By pledging allegiance to me?" "Yes. We offer our lands, our armies, our wealth—everything we have to support your rule." Chen Chang Sheng was silent for a long moment. He could feel Xu You Rong's hand on his arm, grounding him. "You supported the demon cult because it was convenient," he said finally. "Because it served your interests. Now that they're gone, you want to switch sides. You want to be on the winning team." The man's smile faltered. "Your Highness, I assure you—" "Save your assurances." Chen Chang Sheng stood, his voice cold. "I know exactly what you are. You're the same kind of people who stood by while the demon cult murdered innocents. Who profited from their crimes. Who turned their backs on the suffering of the common people." "Your Highness—" "You want to pledge allegiance? Then prove it. Not with words, but with actions. Show me that you're worthy of redemption. Help me rebuild the empire. Help me heal the wounds that your inaction allowed to fester." The man stared at him, his expression shifting from shock to grudging respect. "You're asking a lot, Your Highness." "I know. But I'm not asking. I'm demanding." Chen Chang Sheng's eyes blazed with golden fire. "That's what it means to be a king." --- The delegation left, their tails between their legs. Xu You Rong turned to Chen Chang Sheng, her expression filled with admiration. "That was impressive. You handled them perfectly." "I didn't know what I was doing. I just said what felt right." "That's what makes it impressive. You spoke from the heart." She smiled. "You're going to be a great king, Chen Chang Sheng." "I hope so." He sighed. "But I can't do it alone. I need people I can trust. People who will tell me when I'm wrong." "You have them." She gestured to the room, where Tang Thirty-Six, Wu Feng, Su Mei, and the others were gathered. "We're all here for you." Chen Chang Sheng looked at his friends—his family. His heart swelled with gratitude. "Thank you," he said. "All of you. I couldn't have done any of this without you." "You could have," Tang Thirty-Six said, his grin returning. "But it would have been way less fun." --- The next few weeks were a whirlwind of activity. Chen Chang Sheng worked tirelessly to rebuild the empire. He established new laws, reformed the bureaucracy, and appointed people he trusted to positions of power. Wu Feng became the commander of the Imperial Guard, Su Mei took over the Ministry of Records, and Tang Thirty-Six... well, Tang Thirty-Six was Tang Thirty-Six. "I'm not cut out for politics," he announced one evening, lounging in the palace gardens. "Too much scheming. Too many backroom deals. I'm better at making trouble than fixing it." "You're good at everything," Chen Chang Sheng said. "You just don't want to admit it." "I'm good at being charming. That's different." Tang Thirty-Six winked. "But if you insist, I suppose I could take a position in the Ministry of Ceremonies. All those parties, all those beautiful women..." "You're impossible." "I know. That's why you love me." Xu You Rong appeared, her expression serious. "Chen Chang Sheng, we need to talk." He excused himself and followed her to a quiet corner of the garden. "What's wrong?" "I've received word from my family." Her voice was strained. "They're not happy about our... arrangement." "The marriage contract?" "Yes. They want to see me. To talk about the future." She met his eyes. "They want me to come back to the Southern Holy Maiden sect. To resume my training. To fulfill my duties as the Phoenix Empress." "You don't have to go." "I know. But I also know that I can't avoid them forever." She sighed. "My family has been part of the empire for generations. I can't just cut them off. Not entirely." "What do you want to do?" "I want to go see them. To talk to them. To try to make them understand." She reached out and took his hand. "But I want to come back. I want to be with you." "Then go. Talk to them. I'll be here when you return." "You'll wait for me?" "I'll wait forever if I have to." She smiled, leaning in to kiss him. "I won't make you wait that long." --- Xu You Rong left the next morning. Chen Chang Sheng watched her go, his heart heavy. He knew she had to do this—had to face her family, to try to bridge the gap between her old life and her new one. But that didn't make it any easier. "You look like a lost puppy," Tang Thirty-Six observed, appearing at his side. "I feel like one." "Don't worry. She'll come back. She's not the kind of woman who gives up on something she wants." "And what does she want?" Tang Thirty-Six laughed. "You, obviously. It's written all over her face every time she looks at you." Chen Chang Sheng felt a warmth spread through his chest. "You think so?" "I know so. I'm an expert on these things." Tang Thirty-Six clapped him on the back. "Now stop moping and come help me plan the spring festival. It's going to be the biggest celebration the empire has ever seen." "The spring festival?" "Of course. The people need something to celebrate. Something to look forward to." Tang Thirty-Six's eyes sparkled. "And what better way to celebrate than with food, music, and dancing?" "You just want an excuse to party." "Guilty as charged." Tang Thirty-Six grinned. "But I'm also right. The people need hope. And you, my friend, are the symbol of that hope. So let's give them a celebration they'll never forget." --- The spring festival was everything Tang Thirty-Six had promised. The streets of Tian Du were decorated with lanterns and flowers. The air was filled with the scent of roasting meat and fresh bread. Musicians played on every corner, and dancers performed in the squares. It was the largest celebration the capital had seen in a century. Chen Chang Sheng walked through the crowds, his heart filled with joy. For the first time in his life, he felt like he belonged. Like he was part of something bigger than himself. "Your Highness!" a voice called out. "Your Highness, over here!" He turned to see a group of children waving at him, their faces bright with excitement. He knelt down to their level. "Hello there. What are your names?" "I'm Li Wei!" the oldest boy said. "And this is my sister, Mei Mei. We wanted to thank you." "Thank me? For what?" "For saving the empire. For defeating the demon lord. For making the world safe for us." Li Wei's eyes were earnest. "We want to be like you someday. Strong and brave." Chen Chang Sheng felt his heart swell. "You can be. Anyone can be strong and brave. It's not about power. It's about the choices you make." "Like the choice to fight?" "Exactly. The choice to fight for what's right. Even when it's hard. Even when you're scared." He reached out and tousled the boy's hair. "You have that choice every day. Don't waste it." The children beamed and ran off, their laughter echoing through the streets. Tang Thirty-Six appeared at his side, his expression filled with amusement. "You just made a bunch of new fans. They're going to be telling that story for years." "I hope they remember it. The lesson, I mean." "They will. Because it's the truth." Tang Thirty-Six's voice was serious for once. "That's what makes you different from the people who came before. You actually believe in the words you speak." "I have to. If I don't believe in them, no one else will." --- The festival continued late into the night. Chen Chang Sheng found himself standing on a hill overlooking the city, the lights of the celebration spread out below him like a sea of stars. He thought about everything that had brought him here—the pain, the sacrifice, the loss. But he also thought about the joy. The love. The hope. "Brooding again?" a voice said. He spun around, his heart leaping. Xu You Rong was standing behind him, her eyes filled with warmth. "You came back," he breathed. "I told you I would." She stepped forward, her hand reaching out to touch his face. "I talked to my family. It was... difficult. But I made them understand." "Understand what?" "That this is my home now. That you are my home." She smiled. "They weren't happy about it. But they accepted it. They want me to be happy." "Are you happy?" "I am. When I'm with you, I'm happy." She leaned in, her lips brushing against his. "I love you, Chen Chang Sheng." His heart soared. "I love you too." They kissed, the city lights twinkling below them like a thousand tiny stars. --- Three months later, the wedding took place. It was the largest ceremony the empire had ever seen. Thousands of people gathered in the capital to witness the union of the Dragon King's heir and the Phoenix Empress. The streets were decorated with flowers and lanterns. The air was filled with music and laughter. Chen Chang Sheng stood at the altar, his heart pounding. He was dressed in robes of gold and red, the traditional colors of the Dragon Kingdom. Beside him, Xu You Rong was the picture of beauty, her robes of white and silver, her hair adorned with a phoenix crown. "Today," the chief priest announced, "we celebrate not just a marriage, but a new beginning. A new era for the empire. An era of peace, of prosperity, of hope." The crowd cheered. Chen Chang Sheng looked at Xu You Rong, his eyes filled with love. "Are you ready?" she whispered. "I've been ready my whole life." The priest raised his hands, and the ceremony began. --- After the wedding, Chen Chang Sheng and Xu You Rong stood on the balcony of the palace, looking out at the city that had become their home. "We did it," she said. "We actually did it." "I never thought I would get here. When I left the mountain, I thought I was going to die. I thought I had less than a year to live." "You did die, in a way. The old Chen Chang Sheng died. But the new one was born." She smiled, leaning into him. "And I'm so glad he was." "Me too." He wrapped his arm around her. "Me too." "Now what?" she asked. "What comes next?" He was silent for a moment. Then he smiled. "Anything we want. Together."
