EPISODE 11: THE SHADOW KING --- The first year of Chen Chang Sheng's reign was peaceful. The empire flourished under his leadership. Trade routes reopened, crops flourished, and the people began to trust in their future once more. The Dragon King's heir had brought hope to a land that had been drowning in darkness. But peace, as Chen Chang Sheng was about to learn, was never permanent. It began with a letter. The messenger arrived at dawn, his clothes torn and his face streaked with dirt. He collapsed at the palace gates, gasping for breath, a sealed scroll clutched in his trembling hand. "I must see the Dragon King," he rasped. "Urgent news from the Northern Wastes." Chen Chang Sheng received him in the throne room, Xu You Rong at his side. The messenger was brought in, his legs barely able to support him. "Your Highness," he said, bowing low. "I bring grave tidings. The Northern Wastes have fallen." "Fallen?" Chen Chang Sheng leaned forward. "To whom?" "The Shadow King." The messenger's voice shook. "He emerged from the darkness three months ago, conquering village after village, city after city. His army is vast—an army of shadows, of nightmares made flesh. No one can stop him." "Shadow King?" Xu You Rong's face paled. "I've never heard of such a figure." "No one has. He appeared from nowhere, as if he had been waiting for the right moment to strike." The messenger looked up, his eyes filled with fear. "He's not like the demon lord, Your Highness. He's something worse. Something ancient. Something that has been sleeping for millennia." Chen Chang Sheng felt a chill run down his spine. "What does he want?" "He wants you, Your Highness. He said so himself. He wants the Dragon King's heir. He wants the Dragon's Heart. And he will destroy everything in his path to get them." --- The council convened immediately. Tang Thirty-Six, Wu Feng, Su Mei, and the other advisors gathered in the war room, their faces grim. The news from the Northern Wastes had shaken them all. "We need more information," Wu Feng said, his hand resting on his sword. "We can't just march into the Wastes without knowing what we're facing." "The messenger gave us everything he had," Su Mei countered. "The Shadow King's army is made of shadows. They're impervious to normal weapons. They can't be killed." "Everything can be killed," Chen Chang Sheng said. "We just need to find out how." "And if we can't?" Tang Thirty-Six asked. "What if this Shadow King is truly invincible?" "Then we find another way." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was firm. "I didn't defeat the demon lord by giving up. I won't defeat this new threat by giving up either." Tang Thirty-Six was silent for a moment. Then he spoke, his voice unusually quiet. "There's something I need to tell you. Something I should have told you a long time ago." The room fell silent. Everyone turned to look at him. "Thirty-Six?" Chen Chang Sheng frowned. "What is it?" Tang Thirty-Six took a deep breath. "The Shadow King... I know who he is." --- The revelation sent shockwaves through the room. "You know him?" Wu Feng demanded. "How? What is he to you?" Tang Thirty-Six's face was pale, his hands trembling. "He's my father." The silence that followed was absolute. "Your father?" Chen Chang Sheng finally managed. "But you told me your father was the Grand Chancellor. That he was a powerful official in the empire." "He is. Was. He's both." Tang Thirty-Six's voice was strained. "The man I call my father—the Grand Chancellor—he adopted me when I was a child. But my real father... my blood father... was the Shadow King." "Your blood father," Su Mei repeated slowly. "The Shadow King. The monster who's conquering the Northern Wastes." "He wasn't always a monster. He was a cultivator, one of the most powerful in the empire. But he was corrupted by dark magic. He sought power beyond what was safe, and it consumed him." Tang Thirty-Six's voice cracked. "My mother tried to stop him. She gave her life to protect me. And when my father fell into darkness, the Grand Chancellor took me in. Raised me as his own." "Why didn't you tell us?" Chen Chang Sheng asked. "All this time, you knew—" "I was ashamed." Tang Thirty-Six's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I didn't want anyone to know who I really was. I thought if people knew about my father, they would judge me. Fear me. Hate me." "Thirty-Six—" "I'm sorry." His voice broke. "I'm so sorry I didn't tell you sooner." Chen Chang Sheng crossed the room and pulled his friend into an embrace. "You have nothing to apologize for. You're not responsible for your father's choices. You're not him." "But what if I am? What if I have his darkness inside me?" Tang Thirty-Six pulled back, his expression desperate. "What if I'm destined to become like him?" "Then we'll fight it together. The same way we've fought everything else." Chen Chang Sheng gripped his shoulders. "You're my friend, Thirty-Six. My brother. Nothing will ever change that." --- The council continued late into the night. They discussed strategy, intelligence, and the best way to confront the Shadow King. But the information was limited. No one knew where his army was headed next, or how to stop him. "We need to send scouts," Wu Feng said finally. "Find out more about this shadow army. Identify weaknesses." "I'll go," Tang Thirty-Six volunteered. "I know the Northern Wastes. I spent part of my childhood there, before my mother died." "Absolutely not," Chen Chang Sheng said. "If your father finds you—" "Then I'll talk to him." Tang Thirty-Six's voice was steady. "Maybe I can reason with him. Maybe there's still something human left inside him." "Or maybe he'll kill you." "Then at least I'll have tried." Tang Thirty-Six met his friend's eyes. "I have to do this, Chang Sheng. I can't run from my past anymore." Chen Chang Sheng was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded. "Fine. But you're not going alone. I'll come with you." "Your Highness, you can't—" Wu Feng started. "I can. And I will." Chen Chang Sheng's voice brooked no argument. "The Shadow King wants me. If he sees me coming, maybe he'll be willing to talk." "And if he's not?" "Then we fight." He smiled grimly. "That's what we do, isn't it?" --- They left the capital the next morning. The journey to the Northern Wastes was long and treacherous. The landscape grew increasingly barren as they traveled north—the green fields giving way to rocky plains, the warmth of the sun replaced by a biting cold. "The Shadow King has spread his influence far," Su Mei observed, looking at the dead trees that lined the road. "The land is dying. His darkness is poisoning everything it touches." "Then we need to stop him before it's too late," Chen Chang Sheng said. They traveled for two weeks, following the path of destruction left by the Shadow King's army. Villages that had once been thriving were now empty, their inhabitants either dead or fled. The silence was oppressive. Finally, they reached the outskirts of the Shadow King's territory. The darkness was visible from miles away—a black cloud that hung over the landscape like a shroud. The sky was a sickly gray, the sun barely visible through the gloom. "He's here," Tang Thirty-Six said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can feel him." "How do you want to approach?" Xu You Rong asked, her hand on her sword. "Carefully." Chen Chang Sheng dismounted from his horse. "We'll go the rest of the way on foot. We can't afford to announce our presence." They crept through the shadowed landscape, moving from cover to cover. The darkness was thick, pressing against them like a physical weight. And then they saw him. The Shadow King was seated on a throne of black stone, his form shrouded in darkness. He was massive—easily ten feet tall, his body covered in armor that seemed to absorb light. His face was hidden behind a mask of shadow, but his eyes glowed with a malevolent red light. "Father," Tang Thirty-Six breathed. The Shadow King's head turned, his glowing eyes fixing on his son. "Tang Thirty-Six. You've come home." "I'm not here to be your son." Tang Thirty-Six stepped forward, his voice steady. "I'm here to stop you." "Stop me?" The Shadow King laughed—a deep, rumbling sound that shook the ground. "You can't stop me. No one can." "Then why are you doing this? Why are you destroying everything in your path?" "Because the world destroyed me." The Shadow King's voice was filled with pain. "Your mother... she was everything to me. And they took her from me. The cultivators, the empire, the so-called righteous people. They killed her because they were afraid of what I could become." "And now you're proving them right." "Perhaps. But I don't care anymore." The Shadow King rose from his throne, his form towering above them. "I've spent centuries in darkness, waiting for the right moment to strike. The demon lord's death was the signal I needed. The power vacuum he left behind... I intend to fill it." "You'll have to go through me first," Chen Chang Sheng said, stepping forward. The Shadow King's eyes fixed on him. "Ah. The Dragon King's heir. I've heard so much about you." "Then you know I won't let you destroy this world." "I know you'll try to stop me. And I know you'll fail." The Shadow King raised his hand, and the darkness around them began to move. "You're powerful, boy. But you don't know how to use that power. You're still learning. Still growing." "Then teach me." The Shadow King laughed again. "Bold. Foolish. But bold." He lowered his hand, and the darkness stilled. "I'll give you one chance. Walk away. Leave now, and I'll let you live." "I won't walk away." "Then prepare to die." --- The battle was brutal. Chen Chang Sheng fought with everything he had, his powers surging through him. But the Shadow King was unlike any opponent he had faced. He moved like smoke, his attacks coming from everywhere and nowhere at once. "He's too fast!" Wu Feng shouted, his sword slashing through the air. "I can't hit him!" "Don't focus on hitting him!" Xu You Rong yelled. "Focus on his patterns! He has to follow a logic!" Chen Chang Sheng watched, studying the Shadow King's movements. His attacks were chaotic, seemingly random. But there was a rhythm to them—a pattern that repeated every few seconds. "Thirty-Six!" he called out. "Talk to him! Distract him!" Tang Thirty-Six stepped forward, his voice filled with emotion. "Father! Please! Listen to me!" The Shadow King paused, his attacks faltering. "Son..." "You were a good man once. A good father. I know you were." Tang Thirty-Six's voice cracked. "Please. I don't want to lose you. Not again." The Shadow King's form wavered. For a moment, his mask of darkness slipped, revealing a face that was lined with pain. "I'm sorry," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm so sorry." And then the darkness exploded outward, sending them all flying. --- Chen Chang Sheng landed hard, the wind knocked out of him. He struggled to his knees, looking for his friends. They were scattered across the battlefield, dazed but alive. "Thirty-Six!" he shouted. "Where's Thirty-Six?" Tang Thirty-Six was standing in front of the Shadow King, his sword raised. But he wasn't attacking. He was just... standing. "Father," he said. "It's not too late. You can still choose." "I can't choose," the Shadow King said. "The darkness is too strong. It's consumed me. I can't fight it anymore." "Then let me help you." "Help me?" The Shadow King laughed bitterly. "You can't help me, son. No one can. The darkness is permanent. It's who I am now." "No. It's not." Tang Thirty-Six stepped forward, his voice filled with conviction. "You're my father. And I know you're still in there. I've seen glimpses of him. The man who used to play with me when I was a child. The man who loved my mother. The man who wanted to protect the world." The Shadow King's form wavered again. "Son..." "I'm not going to fight you. I'm not going to kill you. I'm going to save you." Tang Thirty-Six raised his sword—and plunged it into his own chest. "Thirty-Six!" Chen Chang Sheng screamed. Tang Thirty-Six crumpled to the ground, blood streaming from the wound. The Shadow King stared in horror. "What have you done?" he whispered. "Remember..." Tang Thirty-Six gasped. "Remember who you were..." The blood pooled beneath Tang Thirty-Six's body, spreading across the ground. And as it touched the Shadow King's feet, the darkness began to recede. "No..." the Shadow King said. "No, I can feel... I can feel the darkness leaving..." The shadows peeled away, dissolving like morning mist. The Shadow King's form shrank, the armor crumbling, the mask falling away. And when the darkness was gone, a man stood in his place. He was tall, handsome, his face lined with age and regret. His eyes were no longer red—they were blue, the color of the sky on a clear day. "Tang Thirty-Six," he breathed. "My son..." He knelt beside the fallen boy, gathering him into his arms. "Stay with me," he pleaded. "Please, stay with me." Tang Thirty-Six opened his eyes, a weak smile on his face. "It's okay, Father. It's okay." "No. It's not okay. You can't die. You can't..." "I was born to bring you back. I know that now." Tang Thirty-Six's voice was fading. "It was always meant to be." "Thirty-Six." Chen Chang Sheng rushed to his friend's side, his eyes filled with tears. "Don't you dare die on me. Not now. Not after everything." "Chang Sheng." Tang Thirty-Six reached out, his hand finding his friend's. "Thank you. For everything. For being my friend. My brother." "You're not dying. I won't let you die." "I have to." Tang Thirty-Six smiled. "This is my destiny. My sacrifice. Just like you made yours." "No—" "Promise me something." Tang Thirty-Six's voice was barely audible. "Promise me you'll keep fighting. Keep protecting the empire. Keep being the hero I always knew you were." "I promise." "Good." Tang Thirty-Six's eyes closed. "Good..." And then he was still. --- The camp was silent that night. Chen Chang Sheng sat beside his friend's body, his eyes red from crying. Xu You Rong was beside him, her hand on his shoulder. "There's nothing you could have done," she said softly. "He made his choice." "I know. But that doesn't make it any easier." "Loss never is." She pulled him into an embrace. "But we have to keep going. For him. For everyone who believes in us." Chen Chang Sheng nodded, his voice thick. "I know." The Shadow King—now just a man, a grieving father—approached them. His face was haggard, his eyes filled with sorrow. "I didn't deserve his sacrifice," he said. "I didn't deserve his love." "Maybe not," Chen Chang Sheng said. "But he gave it anyway. That's who he was." "He was the best of us. The best of everything." The man knelt beside his son's body. "I'll spend the rest of my life trying to be worthy of him." "Then do it. Live. Make him proud." The man looked up, meeting Chen Chang Sheng's eyes. "I will. I promise." --- They buried Tang Thirty-Six at sunset. The grave was marked with a simple stone, engraved with the words: *A brother. A friend. A hero.* Chen Chang Sheng stood at the head of the grave, his hand on Xu You Rong's. "He saved us," he said. "He saved all of us. He gave his life to bring his father back from the darkness." "He was brave," Wu Feng said. "Braver than I ever was." "He was a fool," Su Mei said, her voice choked with tears. "A beautiful, wonderful fool." Chen Chang Sheng smiled through his tears. "Yes. He was. And we're better for having known him." They stood in silence, the wind whispering through the trees. Finally, Chen Chang Sheng turned to face them. "We keep going," he said. "That's what Thirty-Six would have wanted. We keep fighting. Keep protecting. Keep building a world worthy of his sacrifice." "Together," Xu You Rong said. "Together."
