EPISODE 8: THE VALLEY OF ECHOES --- The kiss was unlike anything Chen Chang Sheng had ever experienced. It was soft at first—tentative, questioning, as if Xu You Rong was testing the waters of her own feelings. But then it deepened, and he felt the walls she had built around herself crumble. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, and for a moment, the world faded away. There was no prophecy. No demon cult. No curse. Just the two of them, lost in each other. When they finally pulled apart, Xu You Rong's cheeks were flushed, her eyes bright with emotion. "Wow," she breathed. "I didn't expect that." "Neither did I." He smiled, his heart still racing. "But I'm not complaining." She laughed—a genuine, unguarded laugh that made him fall even deeper in love with her. "We should probably get some sleep. We have a long journey ahead of us." "Probably." He reached out and took her hand. "But I don't want to let go." "Then don't." She squeezed his fingers. "Not tonight." They sat together in the ruins, watching the stars wheel overhead, their hands intertwined. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them needed to. For the first time in his life, Chen Chang Sheng felt something he had never thought he would feel. *Happiness.* --- The journey to the Valley of Echoes took another two weeks. The terrain grew harsher as they traveled north—rocky mountains, treacherous passes, and forests so dense that the sunlight barely penetrated. The group moved carefully, always alert for demon cult attacks. But something was different now. The attacks had stopped. "They're waiting for something," Wu Feng observed. "They know where we're going. They're letting us lead them to the valley." "That's what I'm afraid of," Chen Chang Sheng admitted. "The demon lord said the valley holds my mother's prison. He wants me to free her." "And will you?" Chen Chang Sheng was silent for a moment. "I don't know. I need to hear her side of the story. I need to understand what happened." "What if she really did betray your father?" "Then I'll have to decide what that means." He met Wu Feng's eyes. "But I won't make that decision until I know the truth." Wu Feng nodded slowly. "I can respect that. Even if I think it's stupid." "It's okay. I think it's stupid too." They walked in companionable silence for a while. Then Wu Feng spoke again. "I never apologized for trying to kill you. In the examination." "You were just doing what you were paid to do." "That doesn't make it right." Wu Feng's expression was grim. "I was a fool. I let money and pride blind me. I've been paying for that mistake ever since." "We all make mistakes." Chen Chang Sheng smiled. "The important thing is what we do afterwards." "Is that why you're still alive? Because you refuse to give up?" "Something like that." Chen Chang Sheng looked up at the mountains. "I was supposed to die before I turned twenty. Every day I'm still breathing is a victory. I've decided that as long as I have one more day, I'll use it to fight. For my life. For the people I love. For the future I want to build." Wu Feng was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "I think I understand now. Why they follow you." "Who?" "Everyone. Xu You Rong. Tang Thirty-Six. Even me." Wu Feng met his eyes. "You make people believe that anything is possible. That's a gift, Chen Chang Sheng. Don't waste it." --- They reached the Valley of Echoes on the morning of the thirtieth day. The valley was hidden between two massive peaks, its entrance obscured by a barrier of shimmering energy. The air around it crackled with power, ancient and potent. "The barrier," Xu You Rong said. "We need the Compass to get through." Chen Chang Sheng pulled out the Dragon's Compass. It glowed in his hand, resonating with the barrier's energy. He could feel the connection between them—a bond that had been forged a thousand years ago. "Everyone stay close," he said. "I don't know what will happen when we enter." He raised the Compass, and the barrier parted. --- The Valley of Echoes was unlike anything Chen Chang Sheng had ever seen. The valley floor was covered in a thick mist that swirled around their ankles, obscuring the ground beneath. The walls were made of crystal, reflecting images that seemed to dance and shift with every step. And the sounds—the echoes—were everywhere. The whispers started first. They were faint at first, barely audible over the sound of their footsteps. But they grew louder as they walked, forming words that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere. *Chen Chang Sheng.* *You should have died.* *You should have stayed on the mountain.* *This is all your fault.* "Don't listen," Xu You Rong said, her voice firm. "They're trying to confuse us. To break our resolve." "I know." Chen Chang Sheng forced himself to keep walking. "I won't let them stop me." The whispers grew louder, more insistent. They told him things he didn't want to hear—about his mother, his father, the prophecy that had been written before he was born. They told him he was a failure, a mistake, a curse. And then they showed him the visions. --- The first vision was of his mother. She was young—younger than he had ever seen her—standing in a garden of white flowers. The Dragon King was beside her, his hand intertwined with hers. "He's coming," the Dragon King said, his voice filled with sorrow. "The demon lord is coming." "I know." His mother's voice was steady, but he could see the fear in her eyes. "I've made my choice." "Are you sure? There's still time—" "There's no time." She looked up at him, her expression resolute. "This is the only way. If I don't do this, he'll destroy everything. Our child, our future, everything we've built." "Then I'll fight him. I'll—" "You'll die." She reached up and touched his face. "I've seen the future. I know what happens. If we fight him together, we both die. But if I make a deal... if I pretend to betray you... I can save you. Save our child." "I don't want you to sacrifice yourself for me." "I'm not." She smiled, and it was heartbreaking. "I'm sacrificing myself for our child. For the heir who will carry on your legacy. Who will change the world." The vision faded, replaced by another. --- The second vision was of the demon lord. He was standing in a darkened chamber, his face twisted with triumph. His mother was beside him, her expression cold and unreadable. "You've done well," the demon lord said. "The Dragon King has fallen. His power is ours." "Not yet." His mother's voice was flat. "The Dragon's Heart is still out there. Without it, you can never claim his full power." "Then where is it?" "I won't tell you." She stepped back, her eyes blazing with defiance. "I've done what you asked. I've helped you defeat him. But I won't give you the heart. I'll die before I let you have that." The demon lord laughed. "You think you have a choice? You're my prisoner, not my ally. And you will tell me where the heart is." "Never." The demon lord's hand flashed out, striking her across the face. "You will tell me! I'll keep you alive for a thousand years, keep you in agony, until you beg me to take the information—" "Enough!" A voice thundered through the chamber, and a figure stepped out of the shadows. It was a woman—older than his mother, her face lined with the wisdom of centuries. The vision faded. --- The third vision was the most disturbing of all. It showed Chen Chang Sheng himself—standing over the fallen bodies of his friends, his eyes blazing with golden fire. The demon lord was on his knees before him, pleading for mercy. "Please," the demon lord begged. "I'll give you anything. Everything. Just let me live—" "You killed my father." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was cold, utterly devoid of emotion. "You imprisoned my mother. You tried to destroy everything I love. Why would I let you live?" "Because I know the truth. I know what happened to your mother. I know why she really betrayed—" "You don't know anything." Chen Chang Sheng raised his sword, and the demon lord screamed. "No!" Chen Chang Sheng shouted, trying to break free of the vision. "That's not me! I wouldn't—I could never—" "Are you sure?" a voice whispered in his ear. "Are you really sure?" --- He opened his eyes to find himself on his knees in the mist. The group was gathered around him, their faces filled with concern. Xu You Rong was holding his hand, her grip tight. "Chen Chang Sheng! Are you alright?" "I... I saw things." His voice was shaking. "Visions. The future. My mother's past." "Visions from the valley," Su Mei said. "They're designed to break you. You have to ignore them." "I can't. They felt so real." He looked up at Xu You Rong. "I saw myself. Killing the demon lord. But it wasn't me. It was like I was... different. Changed." "Changed how?" "I don't know. Angry. Cruel. I didn't recognize myself." Xu You Rong's expression was troubled. "We need to keep moving. The demon cult will be here soon. We need to find the prison—find your mother—before they catch up." Chen Chang Sheng nodded, forcing himself to stand. His legs were weak, but he couldn't afford to stop now. "Let's go," he said. "We're not far." --- The prison was hidden at the heart of the valley, protected by a barrier of crystalline energy. Chen Chang Sheng raised the Compass, and the barrier parted, revealing a small chamber carved into the rock. Inside, a figure sat in the shadows, her eyes closed, her face peaceful. His mother. "Mother," he breathed. "Mother, I'm here." She opened her eyes, and he saw the recognition dawn in them. "Chang Sheng. You came." "Of course I came." He rushed forward, kneeling before her. "I'm going to get you out of here." "No." She reached out and touched his cheek, her smile sad. "You can't." "What? Why not?" "Because I chose to be here. I chose to sacrifice myself so that you could live." Her eyes glistened with tears. "Your father and I made a deal with the demon lord. I would give myself up, and he would let you live. It was the only way." "Then I'll break the deal. I'll save you—" "You can't, Chang Sheng. The prison is keyed to my life force. If you try to break me out, the barrier will collapse. The demon lord will be freed." "The demon lord? He's here?" "He's been trapped here for a thousand years. The prison that holds me also holds him." His mother's voice was steady. "That's the truth, Chang Sheng. I betrayed your father to save you. I gave up my freedom to keep you safe. And I would do it again. A thousand times over." Chen Chang Sheng felt the tears streaming down his face. "There has to be another way." "There isn't." She smiled, her eyes filled with love. "But it's okay. I've made my peace with it. The only thing I ever wanted was to see you one more time. To know that you were alive. That you were safe." "I am. I'm safe. I'm strong." He gripped her hands. "I passed the Grand Examination. I found the Dragon's Compass. I've made allies. Friends. I'm going to find the Dragon's Heart and save the world." "I know you will." She squeezed his hands. "You're a hero, Chang Sheng. Just like your father." "I'm not a hero. I'm just a boy who refuses to die." "Maybe that's what makes you a hero." She laughed softly. "The refusal to give up. The determination to keep fighting. That's the dragon's blood, Chang Sheng. That's what makes you special." --- The demon lord's voice echoed through the chamber. "Touching. Truly touching. But you're wasting time, Dragon King's heir. You'll never save your mother. You'll never save anyone." Chen Chang Sheng spun around to find the pale man standing in the entrance of the chamber, his eyes blazing with malevolent light. "Your mother has spent a thousand years in this prison. You'll spend the rest of your life trying to free her." The demon lord laughed. "But you know what? I'm tired of waiting. I'm tired of playing games. I'm tired of watching you struggle and fail." "Then what are you going to do?" The demon lord's smile was terrible. "I'm going to end this. Right now." He raised his hand, and the energy in the chamber exploded. --- Chen Chang Sheng fought with everything he had. His powers surged through him—raw, unrefined, but powerful. He attacked the demon lord with a fury that surprised even himself. But the pale man was too strong, too ancient. "You think you can defeat me?" the demon lord laughed. "You're a child. A weak, dying child playing at being a hero." "I'm not dying." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was filled with defiance. "Not anymore. I survived the curse. I survived the examination. I survived everything you threw at me. And I'll survive this." He raised his hand, and the Compass glowed, unleashing a wave of energy that struck the demon lord like a physical blow. The pale man staggered back, his expression shifting from amusement to shock. "What—what is that?" "The Dragon's Compass." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was steady. "Keyed to the blood of the Dragon King. Keyed to me. And right now, I'm going to use it to end you." "No. No, you can't—" "I can. And I will." --- The battle raged for what felt like hours. Chen Chang Sheng fought with every ounce of strength he had. His friends fought beside him—Xu You Rong, Wu Feng, Tang Thirty-Six, Su Mei. They were wounded, exhausted, but they refused to give up. And slowly, they began to win. The demon lord was weakening. His power was fading, his attacks growing weaker. He looked at Chen Chang Sheng with pure hatred. "This isn't over," he snarled. "I'll find you. Wherever you go, I'll find you." "Not anymore." Chen Chang Sheng raised the Compass. "This ends now." He channeled every bit of power he had into the Compass. The energy erupted from him, striking the demon lord with the force of a hurricane. The pale man screamed, his body dissolving into light. And then he was gone. --- The chamber fell silent. Chen Chang Sheng collapsed to his knees, exhausted. His friends gathered around him, their faces filled with relief. "You did it," Tang Thirty-Six breathed. "You actually did it." "I couldn't have done it without all of you." Chen Chang Sheng looked up at them, his eyes bright with tears. "Thank you. All of you." Xu You Rong knelt beside him, pulling him into a tight embrace. "You're welcome." "Chang Sheng." His mother's voice was weak, distant. "Chang Sheng, come here." He rushed to her side. "I'm here, Mother. I'm here." "The demon lord is dead. But the prison... the prison is collapsing." She smiled sadly. "I have to stay. I can't leave." "There has to be a way. I can—" "Chang Sheng, listen to me." She gripped his hand. "The Dragon's Heart. Find it. Use it. Fulfill the prophecy." She smiled. "Be the hero I always knew you could be." "I don't want to leave you." "I know. But you have to go. You have to live. For me. For your father. For everyone who believes in you." Chen Chang Sheng felt tears streaming down his face. "I'll find a way to save you. I promise." "I know you will." She squeezed his hand one last time. "Now go. Before it's too late." --- The group fled the valley as the prison collapsed behind them. They emerged into the daylight, gasping, exhausted, but alive. Chen Chang Sheng looked back at the valley, his heart heavy with grief. "She's gone," he whispered. "I lost her." "No." Xu You Rong took his hand. "You didn't lose her. You saved her. You gave her peace. That's the most precious gift you could give anyone." Chen Chang Sheng nodded slowly. "The Dragon's Heart. I need to find it." "We will. Together." He looked at his friends—at the people who had stood beside him through everything. His heart swelled with gratitude. "Thank you," he said. "For everything." "Don't thank us yet," Tang Thirty-Six said, grinning. "We haven't found the heart yet. And knowing our luck, it's probably guarded by something even more terrifying." Chen Chang Sheng laughed—a real laugh, despite everything. "Would you expect anything less?" "Never."
