EPISODE 9: THE CITY OF DRAGONS --- The journey to the ancient city of the dragons took the group through lands that had been forgotten by time. They crossed deserts where the sand glittered like crushed diamonds, passed through forests where the trees sang with the voices of long-dead spirits, and climbed mountains so high that the air grew thin and cold. Each step brought them closer to their destination—and closer to the answers they sought. Chen Chang Sheng walked at the head of the group, his hand resting on the Dragon's Compass. The artifact pulsed with a warm light, guiding them forward with an unerring precision. "We're getting close," he announced, squinting at the horizon. "I can feel it." "Feel what?" Wu Feng asked. "The heart. The Dragon's Heart. It's calling to me." He paused, trying to find the words. "It's like a voice—soft, distant, but persistent. It wants me to find it." "Or it wants to lead you into a trap," Su Mei observed. "Maybe. But I don't think so." Chen Chang Sheng smiled. "I trust it." "Trusting an ancient artifact that no one has seen for a thousand years. That's not reckless at all." "You're starting to sound like Tang Thirty-Six." "Someone has to." Su Mei's lips twitched. "He's been oddly quiet lately." Chen Chang Sheng glanced back at his friend. Tang Thirty-Six had been withdrawn for days, his usual good humor replaced by a brooding silence. He walked at the rear of the group, his eyes fixed on the ground, his expression troubled. "Thirty-Six," Chen Chang Sheng called out. "Are you alright?" Tang Thirty-Six looked up, startled. "What? Oh. Yes. Fine. Just tired." "You've been 'just tired' for three days. What's going on?" "Nothing." Tang Thirty-Six's voice was defensive. "I'm fine." Chen Chang Sheng wasn't convinced. But he knew his friend well enough to know when to push—and when to back off. "If you need to talk, I'm here," he said simply. Tang Thirty-Six nodded, but said nothing. --- The city appeared on the horizon at sunset. It was massive—a sprawling metropolis built into the side of a mountain, its walls made of black stone that seemed to absorb the light. Towers rose a hundred feet into the air, their peaks shaped like the heads of dragons. The streets were wide, designed for beings much larger than humans. And it was deserted. "Where is everyone?" Wu Feng asked, his hand going to his sword. "This place should be crawling with life." "It was," Xu You Rong said, her voice hushed. "A thousand years ago, this was the capital of the dragon kingdom. Millions of dragons lived here. They were the most powerful civilization in existence." "What happened to them?" "The demon cult happened." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was grim. "My father fell, and with him, the dragons fell. The city was abandoned. The survivors scattered across the world. This is all that's left." They entered the city through a massive gate that had once been sealed with magic. The spell had faded over the centuries, leaving only a faint shimmer that dissipated as they passed through. The streets were empty, but there were signs of life everywhere. Crumbling statues of dragons in flight. Fountains that had long since run dry. Market stalls that had been abandoned mid-transaction, their goods turned to dust by the passage of time. "This place is a tomb," Su Mei murmured. "No," Chen Chang Sheng said. "It's a monument. A monument to everything that was lost. And everything that can be regained." They walked deeper into the city, the Compass guiding them toward a massive structure at the center—a palace that dwarfed everything around it. Its walls were covered in carvings of dragons, their eyes seeming to follow the group as they passed. "The Dragon Palace," Xu You Rong breathed. "This is where the Dragon King lived. Where he ruled." "Where the heart is hidden," Chen Chang Sheng added. "It has to be inside." They approached the palace gates—two massive doors of black stone, each one taller than a house. The doors were sealed with a lock that seemed to pulse with ancient energy. "The Compass," Chen Chang Sheng said. "It's the key." He raised the artifact, and a beam of golden light shot from it, striking the lock. The doors groaned, their hinges protesting after a thousand years of disuse. But slowly, they began to open. --- The interior of the palace was breathtaking. The ceilings soared above them, painted with scenes of dragons in flight. The walls were lined with treasures—gold, jewels, artifacts that would have made any collector weep with envy. And at the center of the main hall, there was a throne. It was made of black stone, carved in the shape of a massive dragon. Its eyes were set with rubies that seemed to glow with an inner fire. And on the throne sat a figure. "Welcome, Dragon King's heir," the figure said. Chen Chang Sheng tensed. "Who are you?" The figure rose, revealing a woman—tall, elegant, with silver hair that cascaded down her back. Her eyes were gold, like his, and there was something ancient in their depths. "I am the guardian of the Dragon Palace. The last of the dragon servants. I have been waiting for you, Chen Chang Sheng." "Waiting for me? Why?" "Because you are the only one who can claim what lies within." The woman gestured to a door behind the throne. "The Dragon's Heart is in the Chamber of Eternity. But only the true heir can enter." "And how do I prove I'm the true heir?" The woman smiled. "You already have. The Compass recognized you. The palace recognized you. And I recognize you." She stepped aside. "Go. Claim your destiny." Chen Chang Sheng approached the door, his heart pounding. This was it. The moment he had been waiting for. "Chen Chang Sheng," Xu You Rong said, her voice filled with concern. "Are you sure about this?" "I've never been more sure of anything." He turned to face her. "Whatever happens, I want you to know—" "Don't." She stepped forward and kissed him, her lips soft against his. "Don't say goodbye. You're coming back. We have a wedding to plan, remember?" He laughed despite the tension. "Right. The wedding." "Don't keep me waiting too long." He nodded, then turned and pushed open the door. --- The Chamber of Eternity was filled with light. Chen Chang Sheng stepped inside and felt the energy wash over him—warm, powerful, ancient. It was like coming home to a place he had never been. At the center of the chamber, floating above a pedestal, was a crystal sphere. It pulsed with a golden light, and inside, he could see something moving—something alive. The Dragon's Heart. "Finally," a voice said. "You've come." Chen Chang Sheng spun around. Standing in the corner of the chamber was a figure he recognized all too well. The pale man. The demon lord. But he wasn't alone. Beside him stood Tang Thirty-Six, his expression haunted, his hands trembling. "Thirty-Six?" Chen Chang Sheng's voice cracked. "What are you—" "I'm sorry," Tang Thirty-Six said, his voice breaking. "I didn't have a choice. He has my sister. He'll kill her if I don't—" "Enough," the demon lord interrupted. "The boy is mine now, Dragon King's heir. He's been mine since the beginning." "You—" Chen Chang Sheng's mind raced. "You planned this?" "Of course I did. Did you think I would let you find the heart without a price?" The demon lord laughed. "Everything that's happened—the examination, the forest, the temple—it was all part of the plan. All designed to lead you here." "Why?" "Because the heart can only be claimed by someone who is willing to sacrifice everything. And I wanted to see if you were that person." The demon lord's smile was cruel. "It seems you are." Chen Chang Sheng looked at Tang Thirty-Six, his heart breaking. "Thirty-Six, I don't believe this. You're my friend." "I know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Tang Thirty-Six's eyes were filled with tears. "But I can't let her die. She's all I have left." "You won't have to." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was firm. "I'll save her. I'll save both of you." "How? The demon lord is too powerful—" "Trust me." Chen Chang Sheng met his friend's eyes. "Please." Tang Thirty-Six hesitated. Then he nodded. --- The demon lord attacked. But Chen Chang Sheng was ready. He raised the Dragon's Compass, unleashing a wave of energy that sent the pale man staggering backward. "The heart," Chen Chang Sheng called out. "It's responding to me." "Impossible!" the demon lord snarled. "The heart is mine!" "Not anymore." Chen Chang Sheng turned and reached for the crystal sphere. The moment his fingers touched it, the energy exploded outward, filling the chamber with blinding light. And then everything went white. --- Chen Chang Sheng opened his eyes to find himself standing in a field of golden flowers. The sky above him was blue, painted with clouds that seemed to move with a life of their own. The air was warm and fragrant, and there was a peace here that he had never felt before. "Is this... the heart?" he wondered aloud. "No," a voice said. "This is the space between worlds. The place where dreams and reality meet." He turned to find a figure standing behind him. It was a man—tall, powerful, with eyes that blazed with golden fire. The Dragon King. "Father," Chen Chang Sheng breathed. "My son." The Dragon King smiled, and there was love in it. "I've been waiting for you for a very long time." "I don't understand. How are you here?" "I've been here all along. In the heart. Waiting for the day when my heir would come to claim it." The Dragon King stepped forward, his expression filled with pride. "You've done well, Chang Sheng. Better than I ever could have hoped." "There's so much I want to ask you. So much I need to know—" "I know." The Dragon King raised a hand, cutting him off. "But there's no time. The demon lord is still out there, and your friend is in danger. You need to make a choice." "Choice?" "The heart can only be claimed by someone who is willing to sacrifice everything. But it's not a sacrifice of life. It's a sacrifice of self." The Dragon King's voice was heavy. "If you take the heart, you will become something more than human. You will become the Dragon King's heir. You will carry the weight of the prophecy on your shoulders. You will be bound to the fate of the world." "Are you saying I'll lose myself?" "Not lose. Transform. You will still be Chen Chang Sheng. But you will also be something else. Something greater." The Dragon King paused. "The question is: are you willing to pay that price?" Chen Chang Sheng was silent for a long moment. He thought about everything he had been through. The pain, the fear, the loss. But he also thought about the good—about his friends, his love for Xu You Rong, his determination to make a difference. "I've been dying my whole life," he said finally. "And I've spent every day fighting against it. But fighting isn't enough. I need to live. Really live. And to do that, I need to become something more." "Then you've made your choice." The Dragon King reached out and touched his forehead. And Chen Chang Sheng felt the power surge through him—intense, overwhelming, beautiful. He opened his eyes to find himself back in the chamber, the crystal sphere in his hands. --- The demon lord was waiting for him. "You have the heart," the pale man snarled. "But you don't know how to use it. You're still weak. Still dying." "No." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was calm, steady. "I'm not dying anymore." He raised the heart, and the power erupted from him. It wasn't uncontrolled this time—it was focused, precise, aimed directly at the demon lord. The pale man screamed as the energy struck him, his body dissolving into light. "You can't defeat me!" he howled. "I'm eternal! I'm—" "You're nothing." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was cold. "Just a memory. And memories can be erased." The light intensified, and the demon lord's scream faded into silence. --- When the light cleared, the chamber was empty. Tang Thirty-Six was on his knees, gasping, his expression filled with shock. "He's... he's gone?" "He's gone." Chen Chang Sheng lowered the heart. "It's over." "But how? The demon lord has been alive for a thousand years. How did you—" "The heart," Chen Chang Sheng said. "The heart gave me the power to destroy him. But it also gave me something else." "What?" "The truth." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was heavy. "The demon lord wasn't just a villain. He was a part of my father. A piece of him that was corrupted, twisted, turned against everything he stood for." Tang Thirty-Six stared at him. "Your father? But—" "It's complicated." Chen Chang Sheng smiled wearily. "The important thing is that it's over. The demon cult is defeated. The prophecy is fulfilled." "And you? What about you?" Chen Chang Sheng looked at his hands. They were glowing with a faint golden light. "I'm different now. But I'm still me." He met his friend's eyes. "And I'm not going anywhere." --- Chen Chang Sheng emerged from the palace to find his friends waiting for him. Xu You Rong rushed forward, embracing him tightly. "You're alive. I was so worried—" "I'm fine." He pulled back, smiling at her. "Better than fine, actually." "Did you find it? The Dragon's Heart?" He nodded, holding up the crystal sphere. "It's mine now. And with it, I've gained a lot of power." "Power?" Wu Feng asked. "What kind of power?" "The kind that can change the world." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was filled with determination. "The demon lord is dead. The cult is defeated. But there's still a lot of work to do. The empire needs to be rebuilt. The dragons need to return. And I'm going to help make that happen." "Together," Xu You Rong said. "We're going to do it together." Chen Chang Sheng looked at his friends—at the people who had stood beside him through everything. His heart swelled with love and gratitude. "Together," he agreed. "Always."
