EPISODE 17: THE KING'S RETURN
---
The throne room fell silent.
General Zhao stared at Chen Chang Sheng, his face contorted with rage and disbelief. "Love?" he spat. "Love is weakness. Love is what made you give up your crown. Love is what made you a fool."
"Maybe," Chen Chang Sheng said, stepping forward. "But love is also what made me strong. Strong enough to sacrifice everything. Strong enough to fight for what matters. Strong enough to come back when I was needed most."
"You're powerless," General Zhao sneered. "You gave up your throne, your power, everything. You're nothing."
"I gave up my crown. But I didn't give up my heart." Chen Chang Sheng raised his hand, and the Dragon Sword flew from its stand, landing in his grip. "And I didn't give up my will."
The sword blazed with golden light, and General Zhao staggered back.
"How—how is that possible? You're not the Dragon King anymore!"
"I may not be the Dragon King," Chen Chang Sheng said. "But I am still the Dragon King's heir. And as long as I live, I will fight for what is right."
He raised the sword, and the energy exploded outward, sending General Zhao crashing against the wall.
"Guards!" General Zhao screamed. "Guards, seize him!"
But the guards didn't move. They looked at Chen Chang Sheng, at the golden light that surrounded him, at the truth that was written on his face.
"He's the true king," one of the guards whispered. "He's always been the true king."
"Traitors!" General Zhao howled. "All of you, traitors!"
"No," Chen Chang Sheng said. "They're not traitors. They're loyal—loyal to the empire, loyal to the people, loyal to the truth. And the truth is that you're a tyrant. You've brought nothing but suffering to this land."
"Lies! All lies!"
"Then prove it." Chen Chang Sheng stepped closer. "Prove that you're worthy of the crown. Prove that you care about the people, about the empire, about anything other than yourself."
General Zhao's face twisted with rage. He lunged forward, drawing a dagger from his robe.
"I'll kill you!" he screamed. "I'll kill you all!"
But before he could reach Chen Chang Sheng, Xu You Rong moved. Her sword flashed, and General Zhao's dagger clattered to the floor. She stood over him, her eyes blazing.
"You're under arrest," she said. "For crimes against the empire, against the people, against everything we hold sacred."
General Zhao stared at her, his face pale. "You can't do this. I'm the Dragon King!"
"You were never the Dragon King. You were just a pretender." She turned to the guards. "Take him away."
---
The guards dragged General Zhao from the hall, his screams echoing through the corridors.
Chen Chang Sheng sheathed the Dragon Sword, his heart heavy. He had won the battle, but the war was far from over. The empire was still in chaos, the people still suffering, the darkness still lurking.
"You did it," Xu You Rong said, stepping beside him. "You saved us."
"I didn't do it alone." He turned to face her. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"Maybe. But you were the one who stood up to him. You were the one who showed everyone the truth."
He shook his head. "I was just trying to do what's right."
"That's what makes you a leader." She reached out and took his hand. "That's what makes you the Dragon King."
"Xu You Rong—"
"I know. You gave up the crown. But the people don't care about the crown. They care about you. They need you."
He looked around the throne room. The guards were watching him, their eyes filled with hope. The servants were peeking through the doors, their faces anxious but trusting.
They needed him. The empire needed him.
"Maybe you're right," he said. "But I'm not the same person I was when I left. The ritual changed me. The sacrifice changed me."
"Changed you how?"
He paused, searching for the words. "I gave up my memories. The memories of being apart from you. The pain, the longing, the grief. They're gone now. And without them, I feel... lighter. But also less complete."
"So you've changed. That doesn't mean you can't lead."
"Maybe. But I need to figure out who I am now. Who I want to be."
She squeezed his hand. "I'll help you. We'll figure it out together."
He smiled, his heart swelling with love. "Together. I like the sound of that."
---
The days that followed were filled with rebuilding.
The empire was in shambles—General Zhao's incompetence had left the economy in ruins, the military in disarray, and the people in despair. But slowly, with Chen Chang Sheng's leadership, things began to improve.
"I can't believe I'm saying this," Wu Feng said, looking over the reconstruction plans. "But I miss the old days. When we were just fighting demons and monsters. It was simpler."
"Simpler?" Su Mei laughed. "You called that simpler?"
"Compared to politics? Absolutely." Wu Feng shook his head. "At least with demons, you knew who the enemy was. With people, it's always complicated."
"It doesn't have to be," Chen Chang Sheng said. "We just have to be honest. Transparent. Trustworthy."
"And what if people don't trust us?"
"Then we earn their trust. One day at a time."
Wu Feng was silent for a moment. Then he nodded slowly.
"You're different, you know," he said. "Since the ritual. You're more... patient. More understanding."
"Maybe I just learned to appreciate what I have." Chen Chang Sheng smiled. "When you've lost as much as I have, you learn to value the things that matter."
---
The Oracle of the Western Mountain appeared at the palace gates three weeks later.
Chen Chang Sheng received her in the throne room, his heart pounding. He had expected her to come, had sensed her presence for days.
"Oracle," he said, bowing. "Welcome."
"I told you I would come when you were ready." Her pale eyes studied him. "And you are ready."
"For what?"
"The truth about what you sacrificed." She stepped closer. "The memories you gave up—they were not just memories. They were a piece of your soul. A piece that, without, you will never be complete."
"Then how do I get them back?"
"You don't." Her voice was gentle. "The sacrifice is permanent. You can never regain what you gave up."
Chen Chang Sheng felt his heart sink. "Then what do I do?"
"You accept it. You move forward. You build a new life with what you have." She reached out and touched his forehead. "The memories you gave up are gone. But the love you have is real. And it's stronger than any memory."
He closed his eyes, feeling her power wash over him.
"Thank you," he said. "Thank you for everything."
"Don't thank me, Dragon King's heir. Just live. Just love. Just be the person you were meant to be."
And then she was gone.
---
That evening, Chen Chang Sheng stood on the balcony of the palace, looking out at the city.
Xu You Rong appeared beside him, her hand slipping into his. "What are you thinking about?"
"I'm thinking about everything. The past. The future. The things I've lost and the things I've gained." He turned to face her. "I gave up my memories of being apart from you. I don't remember the pain anymore. But I do remember that you were worth it. You'll always be worth it."
She reached up and touched his cheek. "I would have done the same. For you."
"I know. That's what makes this so precious." He leaned in and kissed her, soft and sweet. "What we have—it's not perfect. But it's ours."
"Always."
"Always."
---
The empire continued to rebuild.
Under Chen Chang Sheng's leadership, the economy recovered, the military was reformed, and the people began to trust again. The Northern Alliance was dissolved, its states reabsorbed into the empire. The remnants of the demon cult were hunted down and destroyed.
And through it all, Chen Chang Sheng and Xu You Rong stood together.
"We've been through so much," Xu You Rong said one evening, as they sat in the gardens. "So many battles, so many losses, so many sacrifices."
"And yet we're still here," Chen Chang Sheng said. "Still together. Still fighting."
"Are you happy, Chang Sheng?"
He was silent for a moment, thinking about everything he had been through. The pain, the loss, the sacrifice. But also the love, the hope, the joy.
"I am," he said finally. "I'm happy. Because I have you. I have our friends. I have a purpose. What more could I ask for?"
"Nothing," she said, leaning against him. "Nothing at all."
---
The final prophecy had been fulfilled.
The Dragon King's heir had faced his trials—knowledge, power, and heart. He had defeated his enemies—the demon lord, the Shadow King, the Chaos Beast. He had made his sacrifices—his blood, his memories, his crown.
And in the end, he had found peace.
But the story didn't end there. Because in a world of darkness, light always finds a way. And as long as there was love, hope, and courage, the world would survive.
Chen Chang Sheng looked out at the city, his hand in Xu You Rong's. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of gold and crimson. It was beautiful. Peaceful. Perfect.
"This is what we fought for," he said. "This moment. This peace. This future."
"Yes," she agreed. "It was worth it."
He smiled, pulling her close. "It always was."
The stars began to appear, one by one, twinkling in the twilight sky. The city below them was alive with lights, with laughter, with hope.
And in that moment, Chen Chang Sheng knew that everything he had been through—every battle, every sacrifice, every loss—had been worth it.
Because he had found his purpose. He had found his love. He had found his home.
And as the night settled over Tian Du, he knew that the future was bright.
