EPISODE 16: THE PRICE OF LOVE
---
The wind howled across the peak of the Western Mountain, carrying with it the weight of centuries.
Chen Chang Sheng stood before the Oracle, his heart pounding in his chest. He had come here to restore what was lost—the bond between him and Xu You Rong, the love she had sacrificed to save his life. But the price was higher than he had ever imagined.
"Your crown," the Oracle repeated, her pale eyes fixed on him. "Your power. Everything you've built. Are you willing to give it all up?"
"Yes." His voice was steady. "I'll give anything for her."
The Oracle studied him for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly.
"Very well. But there's something you should know before you make this choice." She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The sacrifice you make will not just affect you. It will affect the entire empire. Without your power, without your crown, the empire will be vulnerable. Enemies will rise. Darkness will return."
"Then I'll find another way to protect it."
"There is no other way. The empire needs a strong leader. It needs the Dragon King's power to survive." The Oracle's eyes were filled with sorrow. "If you give up your crown, you may save your love. But you may also doom your people."
Chen Chang Sheng was silent for a long moment. He thought about everything he had built—the peace he had fought for, the hope he had inspired, the future he had dreamed of. He thought about the people who had sacrificed everything for him—Tang Thirty-Six, his mother, his friends.
And he thought about Xu You Rong. The way she had looked at him when she thought he was gone forever. The emptiness in her eyes when she realized a part of her love had faded.
"I'll find another way," he said finally. "There's always another way."
"Is there?" The Oracle's voice was gentle. "Or are you just refusing to accept the truth?"
"The truth is that I love her. And I'll do whatever it takes to make her whole again."
The Oracle was silent for a long moment. Then she smiled—a sad, knowing smile.
"You truly are your father's son," she said. "He would have made the same choice."
She raised her hand, and the air around them began to shimmer.
"Very well, Dragon King's heir. I will help you restore what was lost. But the price is high, and you must pay it willingly. Are you ready?"
"I'm ready."
---
The ritual began.
The Oracle chanted in an ancient language, her voice rising and falling like the wind. The air grew thick with energy, pulsing with a power that Chen Chang Sheng could feel in his very bones.
"To restore the bond," the Oracle intoned, "you must give up a piece of yourself. Not your power, not your crown—but something deeper. Something more precious."
"What?" Chen Chang Sheng asked. "What do I have to give?"
"Your memories. The memories of the time you spent apart from her. The moments of grief, of longing, of despair. You must give them up—sacrifice them to the void—so that the bond can be restored."
"My memories?" He felt a chill run down his spine. "But those are a part of who I am. They shaped me into the person I am today."
"Exactly. And that's why the sacrifice must be made. You must give up the pain you felt in her absence. Only then can the love between you be complete again."
Chen Chang Sheng closed his eyes. He thought about the months he had spent away from Xu You Rong—the loneliness, the despair, the constant ache of missing her. Those memories were painful, but they were also precious. They reminded him of how much he loved her.
But if giving them up meant restoring the bond, meant making her whole again, he would do it.
"I accept," he said. "Take them."
The Oracle raised her hands, and the world around him dissolved.
---
Chen Chang Sheng found himself standing in a field of white flowers.
Xu You Rong was there, her back to him, her hair flowing in the wind. She turned when she heard him approach, her eyes filled with love.
"Chang Sheng," she said. "You came back."
"Of course I did. I'll always come back to you."
She stepped forward, wrapping her arms around him. He held her close, feeling the warmth of her body against his.
"I love you," she whispered. "I've always loved you."
"I know." He pulled back, looking into her eyes. "And I love you too. More than anything."
She smiled, and the world around them began to fade.
"I'll find you," he promised. "I'll always find you."
---
When Chen Chang Sheng opened his eyes, the ritual was complete.
The Oracle was standing before him, her face lined with exhaustion. "It is done," she said. "The sacrifice has been made."
He reached up and touched his head. Something was missing—a piece of himself that he could feel but couldn't identify. The memories of his time apart from Xu You Rong were gone, replaced by a blank space that felt both empty and peaceful.
"The bond is restored," the Oracle continued. "But there is something else you should know."
"What?"
"The sacrifice you made—the memories you gave up—they were not just yours. They were hers as well. The memories of your absence, her grief, her longing. They were intertwined with yours. By giving them up, you have freed both of you from the pain of separation."
Chen Chang Sheng felt a weight lift from his heart. "So she's free too? She'll be happy?"
"She will be whole. As will you." The Oracle smiled. "The bond between you is now stronger than ever. But remember: love is not just about happiness. It's about sacrifice. About giving up pieces of yourself for the sake of another. That's what makes it precious."
"Thank you," he said. "Thank you for everything."
The Oracle nodded. "Go now. Your love awaits you."
---
Chen Chang Sheng descended the mountain, his heart light.
He found Xu You Rong waiting for him at the base, her expression anxious. When she saw him, she rushed forward, throwing her arms around him.
"Chang Sheng! Are you alright? What happened?"
"I'm fine." He held her close, feeling the warmth of her embrace. "The ritual worked. The bond is restored."
She pulled back, looking into his eyes. And then she smiled—a genuine smile, full of love and warmth.
"I can feel it," she said. "I can feel the difference. It's like... like a part of me that was missing has come back."
"I can feel it too." He reached up and touched her cheek. "I love you, Xu You Rong. I've always loved you. And I'll never let you go."
"I love you too." She leaned in and kissed him, soft and sweet. "Never let me go."
"Never."
---
They returned to the capital to find the empire in turmoil.
General Zhao had broken his promise. Instead of working with the empire, he had used his autonomy to raise an army—an army that was now marching toward Tian Du.
"We have a problem," Wu Feng said, his face grim. "The Northern Alliance has turned against us."
"How many soldiers?" Chen Chang Sheng asked.
"Fifty thousand. Maybe more." Wu Feng's jaw tightened. "They're well-equipped, well-trained, and they've been planning this for months."
"Why? Why would they do this after I gave them what they wanted?"
"They don't want autonomy. They want power." Su Mei stepped forward, her expression troubled. "General Zhao has been working with remnants of the demon cult. They've been feeding him information, weapons, support. They want to take over the empire, and they're using him as their puppet."
"Where are they now?"
"Two days' march from the capital. They'll be here by dawn."
Chen Chang Sheng was silent for a long moment. He thought about everything he had been through—the battles, the sacrifices, the losses. He thought about the people who had believed in him, who had died for him, who had given everything for the empire.
And he thought about the Oracle's words. *The empire needs a strong leader. It needs the Dragon King's power to survive.*
"I won't let them win," he said. "Not after everything we've been through. Not after everything we've sacrificed."
---
The army gathered at the gates of Tian Du.
Chen Chang Sheng stood on the walls, looking out at the sea of soldiers that stretched across the plain. Fifty thousand men, armed and ready to fight. Behind him, the city was preparing for siege—soldiers at the ready, civilians taking shelter, the entire empire holding its breath.
"General Zhao," Chen Chang Sheng called out. "Show yourself!"
A figure emerged from the ranks—tall, imposing, his scarred face twisted into a sneer.
"Your Highness," General Zhao said. "I'm surprised you came out to greet me. I thought you'd be hiding in your palace."
"I'm not a coward. I never have been." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was steady. "Why are you doing this? I gave you what you wanted. Autonomy. Freedom. The respect you demanded."
"I want more than that." General Zhao's voice was cold. "I want the throne. I want the power. I want everything."
"You'll never have it."
"We'll see about that." General Zhao raised his hand. "Attack!"
---
The battle was brutal.
Chen Chang Sheng fought with everything he had, his powers surging through him. But he was still recovering from the ritual, and he could feel his strength fading.
"Chang Sheng!" Xu You Rong shouted, fighting beside him. "We can't hold them much longer!"
"I know!" He parried a blow, driving his attacker back. "But we can't give up!"
"Then what do we do?"
Chen Chang Sheng looked at the chaos around him. Soldiers were dying on both sides, the ground slick with blood. The empire was tearing itself apart.
And then he realized what he had to do.
"Stop!" he shouted, his voice amplified by his power. "Stop fighting!"
The battle paused. The soldiers turned to look at him.
"General Zhao!" he called out. "If you want the throne, take it! But not like this. Not by killing innocent people!"
General Zhao emerged from the ranks, his face twisted with rage. "You think you can bargain with me?"
"I'm not bargaining. I'm offering." Chen Chang Sheng stepped forward, his hands raised. "I'll give you the throne. I'll give you everything. Just stop the bloodshed."
"Chang Sheng, no!" Xu You Rong grabbed his arm. "You can't do this!"
"I have to. It's the only way."
"No! You can't—"
"Trust me." He met her eyes. "Please."
She was silent for a moment. Then she nodded.
General Zhao studied him, his eyes narrowed. "Why? Why would you give up everything?"
"Because it's the right thing to do." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was calm. "Because I'd rather lose the throne than lose my soul."
---
The deal was made.
Chen Chang Sheng stepped down as Dragon King. General Zhao took the throne, his face triumphant.
But the victory was hollow.
The empire was in chaos. General Zhao had no idea how to rule, and his ineptitude was causing more problems than it solved. The economy was collapsing, the people were starving, and the darkness that the Chaos Beast had left behind was beginning to rise again.
And then General Zhao made a fatal mistake.
He declared war on the Southern Holy Maiden sect—Xu You Rong's family.
"You can't do that," Xu You Rong said, her voice cold. "The Southern Holy Maiden sect is the most powerful force in the empire. They'll destroy you."
"I'm not afraid of them." General Zhao's smile was cruel. "And neither should you be. Because you're going to be my weapon."
"You're insane."
"Maybe." He reached out and grabbed her arm. "But I'm also the Dragon King now. And you'll do what I say."
Before he could say another word, a voice echoed through the hall.
"Let her go."
General Zhao spun around to find Chen Chang Sheng standing in the doorway, his eyes blazing with golden fire.
"You," General Zhao spat. "I thought you'd left."
"I did. But I'm back." Chen Chang Sheng stepped forward, his voice steady. "And I'm not leaving until you let her go."
"You're powerless. You gave up everything."
"Maybe. But I still have something you don't."
"What?"
"Love."
