THE HOLY STONE

EPISODE 6: THE HOLY STONE --- The Imperial Shrine stood at the heart of Tian Du, a monument to the gods who had shaped the empire's destiny. It was the most sacred place in all of Zhou. Only the most worthy—the winners of the Grand Examination—were permitted to enter its hallowed halls. The walls were made of white jade, so pure that they seemed to glow with an inner light. The roof was covered in golden tiles, each one inscribed with a prayer that had been whispered by emperors and priests for centuries. Chen Chang Sheng stood at the base of the shrine's steps, his heart pounding in his chest. He had made it. Against all odds, against every obstacle, he had reached the final stage of the Grand Examination. The Holy Stone was waiting for him. And with it, the chance to change his fate. "Are you ready?" Xu You Rong asked, appearing at his side. He turned to look at her. She was dressed in formal robes, her hair arranged in an elaborate style that spoke of her noble status. But there was something different about her expression—something softer, more vulnerable. "I have to be," he said. "I've come too far to fail now." "You won't fail." Her voice was surprisingly gentle. "I've seen you fight. I've seen you overcome things that should have killed you. You're stronger than you know, Chen Chang Sheng." "Thank you." He paused. "For everything. For saving my life, for believing in me, for—" "Don't." She held up a hand. "Don't thank me. I didn't do it for you." "Then why?" She was silent for a moment. Then she met his eyes, and he saw something in them that he hadn't seen before. "Because you're the first person who's ever made me feel... something. Something real." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I don't know what it is. I don't know if I want to know. But it's there." Chen Chang Sheng felt his heart skip a beat. "Xu You Rong—" "Don't." She stepped back, her walls going up again. "Just... focus on the Holy Stone. We'll worry about everything else later." She turned and walked away, leaving him standing alone at the base of the shrine. --- The final trial began at noon. The candidates who had passed the third round—less than a hundred out of the original thousands—gathered in the shrine's main hall. The ceiling soared above them, painted with scenes of celestial battles and divine interventions. The walls were lined with statues of the gods, their stone eyes watching the proceedings with silent judgment. At the front of the hall, the chief examiner stood on a raised platform. Behind him, a massive door of black stone dominated the wall. It was carved with symbols that Chen Chang Sheng recognized—the same symbols that had appeared on his master's scrolls, the same symbols that marked his destiny. "The final trial," the chief examiner announced, "is the Trial of the Stone. You will enter the chamber and stand before the Holy Stone. It will test your heart, your soul, and your worthiness. Only those who pass will emerge alive." "Alive?" someone in the crowd whispered. "What does that mean?" The chief examiner ignored the question. "You will enter one by one. Those who succeed will be granted the title of Grand Champion. Those who fail..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. One by one, the candidates stepped forward. Chen Chang Sheng watched them enter the black door, heard the sounds of struggle and pain from within, and saw them emerge—some triumphant, some broken, and some not at all. Xu You Rong was one of the first to enter. She emerged twenty minutes later, her face pale but her eyes blazing with victory. "I passed," she said, her voice steady. "The Stone recognized my worth." "Of course it did," Chen Chang Sheng said. "You're the Phoenix Empress. You're worthy of anything." She gave him a small smile. "Now it's your turn." Chen Chang Sheng took a deep breath and stepped forward. --- The chamber was dark. Only a faint glow illuminated the space—a light that came from a single object at the center of the room. The Holy Stone. It was beautiful. A perfect sphere of crystal, larger than Chen Chang Sheng's head, pulsing with a soft, inner light. It seemed to breathe, to live, to watch him with an intelligence that was ancient and unknowable. "Approach," a voice said. It came from everywhere and nowhere, echoing in his mind rather than his ears. "Approach and be judged." Chen Chang Sheng walked forward, his footsteps echoing in the silence. He stopped before the Stone, his reflection distorted in its crystal surface. "You have been tested," the voice said. "Knowledge. Power. Heart. You have passed all three. But the final trial is the hardest of all." "What is it?" Chen Chang Sheng asked. "To face the truth." The Stone pulsed, and suddenly the world dissolved around him. --- He was standing in the temple on the mountain. His master was before him, looking young and strong, his eyes filled with a sorrow that Chen Chang Sheng had never seen before. "Master? What's happening?" "You're seeing the truth, Chang Sheng. The truth that I've hidden from you for nineteen years." "Hidden? What truth?" The scene shifted, and suddenly Chen Chang Sheng was looking at a woman—beautiful, with long black hair and eyes that seemed to hold the universe. His mother. And beside her stood a man. Tall, powerful, his eyes blazing with golden fire. The Dragon King. "You were never meant to be born," his mother said, her voice heavy with regret. "Your father and I—we broke the laws of the heavens to create you. We knew the price. We knew the curse. But we believed you were worth it." "Why?" Chen Chang Sheng demanded. "Why would you do that?" "Because the world was dying," the Dragon King said, his voice like thunder. "And you were the only one who could save it." The scene shifted again. Chen Chang Sheng saw the demon cult rising, spreading darkness across the land. He saw cities burning, people dying, the empire crumbling to dust. He saw a figure—himself—standing against the darkness, his sword blazing with golden light. But then he saw something else. Something that made his blood run cold. He saw himself falling. Saw the darkness consuming him. Saw his body dissolve into nothing. "You will face a choice," the voice of the Stone whispered. "Save the world—or save yourself. There is no third option." --- Chen Chang Sheng opened his eyes. He was back in the chamber, the Holy Stone pulsing before him. His body was drenched in sweat, his heart racing, his hands trembling. "You have seen the truth," the Stone said. "Now make your choice." "Choice?" Chen Chang Sheng's voice cracked. "You're asking me to choose between my life and the world's?" "Yes." "That's not a choice. That's a death sentence either way." "It is the choice every hero must make." The Stone's voice was calm, detached. "What matters is not the choice itself, but the reason behind it. Are you willing to sacrifice yourself for others? Or will you cling to your own life at the expense of everything you love?" Chen Chang Sheng closed his eyes. He thought about his master, who had raised him, protected him, loved him. He thought about his mother, who had given him up to save his life. He thought about Tang Thirty-Six, who had befriended him without expecting anything in return. And he thought about Xu You Rong. About the way she had looked at him in the cavern. About the way her voice had softened when she spoke his name. "I'm not going to sacrifice myself," he said slowly. "And I'm not going to sacrifice the world." "Impossible. You cannot have both." "Maybe not. But I'm going to try anyway." The Stone was silent for a long moment. Then it began to glow—brighter and brighter, until the entire chamber was filled with blinding light. "You have chosen the path of the fool," the Stone said. "The path of the one who refuses to accept the limits of fate." "Is that a bad thing?" "No. It is the path of the Dragon King." The light exploded outward, washing over Chen Chang Sheng like a wave. He felt the energy enter his body, felt it surge through his meridians, felt it burn away the blockages that had plagued him since birth. And for the first time in his life, he felt power. --- He emerged from the chamber to find the entire hall in chaos. Candidates were shouting, examiners were arguing, and at the center of the commotion stood Xu You Rong, her face pale with fear. "Chen Chang Sheng!" She rushed to his side. "Are you alright? What happened in there?" "I passed," he said, his voice filled with wonder. "The Stone... it changed me. My meridians, they're open. I can feel the energy flowing through me." "Open? But that's—" She stared at him. "That's impossible. The Stone can't heal. It only judges." "Maybe there's something about me that's different. Something the Stone recognized." Before she could respond, a commotion erupted at the entrance of the hall. Guards were shouting, people were screaming, and Chen Chang Sheng recognized the source of the chaos instantly. The demon cult had found them. --- They poured into the hall like a flood of darkness—dozens of figures in black robes, their eyes glowing with malevolent light. At their head was the pale man from the forest, his smile wider than ever. "The Dragon King's heir," he announced. "I've come to claim what's mine." "Never!" Chen Chang Sheng drew his sword, and for the first time, he felt energy surge through his blade. "I'll never let you use me." "Bold words for someone who can barely stand." The pale man laughed. "You may have passed the Grand Examination, but you're still weak. Still fragile. Still dying." "Then come and get me." The demon cult attacked. Xu You Rong met them head-on, her sword blazing with spiritual energy. The other candidates joined the fight, their weapons flashing in the dim light. But the demon cult was too strong, too numerous. Chen Chang Sheng fought with everything he had. His new powers surged through him, giving him strength he had never known. He cut down one demon, then another, his blade singing through the air. But there were too many. And his body was still weak, still failing. "Chen Chang Sheng!" Xu You Rong shouted. "They're too strong! We need to retreat!" "No!" He refused to give up. He had come too far, sacrificed too much. He would not let the demon cult destroy everything he had worked for. The pale man advanced on him, his smile cruel. "This ends now, Dragon King's heir. You will come with me—or you will die." "Neither," a voice said. A blast of energy erupted from the doorway, sending demons flying in all directions. Chen Chang Sheng looked up to see Tang Thirty-Six standing at the entrance, flanked by dozens of soldiers. "You thought you could attack the Imperial Shrine without consequences?" Tang Thirty-Six demanded. "You thought the empire would just let you walk in and take what you wanted?" The pale man's face contorted with rage. "You—" "I'm the son of the Grand Chancellor, you i***t. You think I don't have resources?" Tang Thirty-Six grinned. "Now get out of my city before I decide to get really creative." --- The demon cult retreated. They had no choice. They were outnumbered, outmatched, and the empire's soldiers were closing in. The pale man glared at Chen Chang Sheng with pure hatred. "This isn't over," he snarled. "I'll find you. Wherever you go, I'll find you. And when I do, I'll take everything from you. Everyone you love. Everyone who cares about you." "Try it," Chen Chang Sheng said. "Try it and see what happens." The pale man laughed and disappeared into the shadows, his followers close behind. Tang Thirty-Six rushed to Chen Chang Sheng's side. "Are you alright? Did they hurt you?" "I'm fine. Thanks to you." Chen Chang Sheng smiled wearily. "How did you know to come?" "I've been watching you since the beginning. I saw the demon cult approaching, and I knew I had to act." Tang Thirty-Six's grin returned. "What are friends for?" Xu You Rong stepped forward, her expression unreadable. "The demon cult won't stop. They'll keep coming." "I know." Chen Chang Sheng looked at her. "But I have something I didn't have before." "What?" "Power. Purpose. And people I can trust." He smiled. "I'm not afraid anymore." --- Later that evening, Chen Chang Sheng stood on the balcony of the villa, looking out over the city of Tian Du. His master appeared beside him, his expression proud. "You did well, Chang Sheng. You passed the Grand Examination. You faced the Holy Stone. You survived the demon cult." "Barely." "Barely is still surviving." The old monk chuckled. "You have a long road ahead of you. The Dragon's Heart is out there, waiting to be found. The demon cult is growing stronger. And the prophecy—" "I know." Chen Chang Sheng turned to face his master. "I know I have to find the Dragon's Heart. I know I have to stop the demon cult. I know I have to fulfill the prophecy." "And are you ready for that?" Chen Chang Sheng thought for a moment. Then he nodded. "I'm ready to try." --- Xu You Rong found him later, standing alone in the gardens. "Chen Chang Sheng," she said. "I need to talk to you." "About what?" She was silent for a long moment. Then she stepped closer, close enough that he could see the uncertainty in her eyes. "The marriage contract," she said. "It's still valid. My family expects me to honor it." "Your family? Or you?" She looked away. "I don't know. I never thought I would feel... I never thought anyone would make me feel this way." "Feel what?" She turned back to face him, and her eyes were filled with something that made his heart race. "Feel like I don't want to let you go," she whispered.
