EPISODE 13: THE CHAOS BEAST
---
The sky turned black on the morning of the final battle.
Chen Chang Sheng stood on the walls of Tian Du, watching the darkness spread across the horizon like a living thing. It moved with purpose, consuming everything in its path—trees, fields, villages. The people who had not yet fled were running, screaming, trying to escape the inevitable.
But there was nowhere to run. The darkness was everywhere.
"What is it?" Xu You Rong asked, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "What's coming?"
"The Chaos Beast," Tang Hao said, his face pale. "I've read about it in the ancient texts. It's the primordial force that existed before the gods. Before creation itself. It's the antithesis of everything that lives."
"How do we fight something like that?"
"We don't." Tang Hao's voice was grim. "We can't fight it. We can only hope to contain it."
"Contain it how?" Wu Feng demanded.
"There's a spell. An ancient spell that was used to imprison the Chaos Beast the first time. It requires the sacrifice of a dragon's bloodline—the purest bloodline in existence."
Chen Chang Sheng felt his blood run cold. "The Dragon King's bloodline."
"Yes." Tang Hao met his eyes. "Your blood, Chen Chang Sheng. Your blood is the key to containing the Chaos Beast. Without it, the spell won't work."
"But if he sacrifices his blood—" Xu You Rong started.
"He may not survive." Tang Hao's voice was heavy. "The spell requires everything. Every drop of dragon's blood in his veins. If he gives it all, there might be nothing left."
The silence that followed was deafening.
Chen Chang Sheng looked at his friends—at Xu You Rong's pale face, at Wu Feng's clenched fists, at Su Mei's tear-filled eyes. He thought about everything he had been through. The pain. The sacrifice. The love.
"If it's the only way," he said finally, "then I'll do it."
"No." Xu You Rong grabbed his arm. "There has to be another way. There's always another way."
"Not this time." He turned to face her, his eyes filled with love. "This is what I was born for. This is why I survived everything. To be here. To make this sacrifice."
"Chen Chang Sheng—"
"I love you." He reached up and touched her cheek. "I've loved you since the moment I saw you on that mountain path. I will love you for the rest of eternity."
"Don't say that. Don't talk like you're already gone."
"I'm not gone yet." He smiled. "And I'm not giving up. I'm going to fight with everything I have. And if I fall—"
"Don't fall." Her voice broke. "Please don't fall."
"I'll try. That's all I can promise."
---
The Chaos Beast arrived at sunset.
It was massive—so large that it blotted out the sky. Its form was constantly shifting, never quite solid, never quite defined. It was made of darkness and chaos, of everything that had existed before the world was formed.
And it was angry.
"THE DRAGON KING'S HEIR," it thundered, its voice shaking the very foundations of the earth. "I HAVE COME TO CLAIM WHAT IS MINE."
"You won't claim anything," Chen Chang Sheng shouted back. "I'll stop you. I'll stop all of you."
"YOU CANNOT STOP ME. I AM CHAOS. I AM DESTRUCTION. I AM THE END OF EVERYTHING."
"Then come and get me."
The Chaos Beast lunged, its form expanding to engulf the city. But before it could reach them, Chen Chang Sheng raised the Dragon Sword.
"By the power of the Dragon King's bloodline, by the legacy of my ancestors, I command you—"
The sword blazed with golden light, and a barrier erupted around the city. The Chaos Beast slammed into it, howling with rage.
"IMPOSSIBLE! THE BARRIER SHOULD NOT HOLD!"
"It's not the barrier that's holding you," Chen Chang Sheng said. "It's my blood. My sacrifice. Everything I am."
"YOU WILL DIE FOR THIS!"
"Maybe. But I'll take you with me."
---
The battle was unlike anything Chen Chang Sheng had ever experienced.
The Chaos Beast attacked relentlessly, its form constantly shifting, constantly evolving. It was impossible to predict, impossible to counter. But Chen Chang Sheng refused to give up.
He fought with the Dragon Sword, his powers surging through him. Xu You Rong fought beside him, her sword blazing with spiritual energy. Wu Feng, Su Mei, Tang Hao—they all fought, refusing to let the darkness consume their world.
"THE BARRIER IS WEAKENING!" the Chaos Beast roared. "SOON, I WILL BREAK THROUGH, AND I WILL CONSUME EVERYTHING!"
"We won't let you!" Chen Chang Sheng shouted.
"YOU HAVE NO CHOICE! YOUR BLOOD IS ONLY SO STRONG! EVENTUALLY, IT WILL FAIL!"
Chen Chang Sheng knew the Chaos Beast was right. He could feel his strength fading, his blood draining away. The spell was working, but it was taking everything from him.
"I can't hold on much longer," he gasped. "The spell is consuming me."
"Then stop!" Xu You Rong pleaded. "Let us find another way!"
"There is no other way." He looked at her, his eyes filled with love. "I have to do this. For you. For everyone."
"Chen Chang Sheng—"
"I love you." He reached out and touched her face one last time. "Never forget that. I love you."
And then he turned to face the Chaos Beast, raising the Dragon Sword above his head.
"By the power of the Dragon King's bloodline, I banish you! By the sacrifice of my blood, I seal you! By the love that fills my heart, I condemn you to the darkness forever!"
The Dragon Sword blazed with golden light—brighter than the sun, brighter than anything the world had ever seen. The Chaos Beast screamed, its form dissolving, its power fading.
"NO! YOU CANNOT—"
"I can. And I will." Chen Chang Sheng's voice was steady. "This ends now."
---
The light exploded outward, consuming everything.
When it faded, the Chaos Beast was gone. The darkness had receded, revealing the stars above. The world was silent, peaceful.
And Chen Chang Sheng was falling.
"Chang Sheng!" Xu You Rong screamed, catching him before he hit the ground. "Chang Sheng, stay with me!"
He opened his eyes, struggling to focus on her face. "Did we... did we win?"
"We won. You won." Tears streamed down her face. "But you're hurt. You're so hurt."
"I know." He smiled weakly. "The spell... it took everything. My blood... my power... my life..."
"No. No, you can't leave me. You promised." She clutched him closer. "You promised you wouldn't leave me."
"I'm sorry." His voice was barely a whisper. "I'm so sorry."
"Don't be sorry. Don't you dare be sorry. You saved us. You saved everyone." She pressed her forehead against his. "I love you, Chen Chang Sheng. I love you. Please don't go."
"I love you too." His eyes fluttered closed. "More than... more than anything..."
And then he was still.
---
The world mourned.
For three days, the empire wept for its fallen hero. The streets were filled with mourners, their faces streaked with tears. The temples were packed with worshippers, praying for the Dragon King's heir.
Xu You Rong stood at the window of the palace, looking out at the city that Chen Chang Sheng had died to save.
"He's gone," she whispered. "He's really gone."
"No." Wu Feng's voice was firm. "He's not gone. He lives on in all of us. In everything we do. Everything we build."
"She's right," Su Mei said. "His legacy will never die. He made sure of that."
"But I wanted more." Xu You Rong's voice broke. "I wanted a life with him. Children. A future. I wanted everything."
"We all did." Tang Hao stepped forward. "But some sacrifices are too great to measure. And his was the greatest of all."
Xu You Rong nodded slowly, wiping the tears from her eyes. "You're right. He gave everything for us. The least we can do is honor that sacrifice."
"By living," Su Mei said. "By building the world he dreamed of."
"Together," Wu Feng added.
"Together," Xu You Rong agreed.
---
A week later, Chen Chang Sheng's body was laid to rest.
The funeral was the largest the empire had ever seen. Thousands of people lined the streets, their voices raised in mourning song. The temples rang with bells, the sky filled with lanterns.
Xu You Rong stood at the head of the procession, her face pale but composed. She had promised herself she would be strong. She would honor his memory the way he deserved.
"The Dragon King's heir," the chief priest intoned, "has given his life for the empire. His sacrifice will never be forgotten. His legacy will live forever."
Xu You Rong stepped forward, placing a single white flower on the altar.
"Rest now, my love," she whispered. "You've earned your peace."
And then she turned and walked away, her heart heavy but her spirit unbroken.
---
But that night, as she sat alone in her chambers, she heard a voice.
*Xu You Rong.*
She looked up, her heart racing. "Chang Sheng?"
*I'm here. I'm still here.*
"How? You died. I saw you die."
*I died. But I didn't leave. I can never leave you.*
"Where are you? How can I find you?"
*The Dragon Sword. It holds a piece of my soul. As long as it exists, I exist.*
She ran to the armory, grabbing the Dragon Sword from its stand. The moment her fingers touched the hilt, she felt him—his warmth, his presence, his love.
"Chang Sheng," she breathed. "You're really here."
*I told you. I would never leave you.*
"Can you... can you come back? Is there a way?"
*I don't know. But I'll try. For you. Always for you.*
She clutched the sword to her chest, tears streaming down her face.
"I'll find a way," she promised. "I'll find a way to bring you back. No matter what it takes."
*I know you will.* His voice was filled with love. *I believe in you, Xu You Rong. I always have.*
