After hanging up, I called Nathan.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Nathan. It's Grace."
"Oh. Hey. What's up?"
"The sky." I said, laughing. He laughed, too. "I'm just kidding. But it's true. Anyways, I called to see if I could get you to come with me tomorrow. My parents are throwing a Valentine's day party at the town hall for family and friends, but said I can invite anyone I want to to come to their party, too. So, I was wondering if you'd come with me."
"I'd love to. But, my boss. I don't know if I can convince her to let me take the day off and go with you to your parents' party. I can talk to her and see. But, no guarantees."
"How about I come up there and talk to your boss with you. Do you think that she'd be more apt to saying yes if she sees that you're not lying and I'm there to help prove it? Maybe I can even get her to say yes if I invite her and sing one of my love songs with my crew. Because they're coming too."
"Let's do it. She's here at the station now, so, if you're free, you can come down here now and we can convince her to say yes together."
"Sounds great. Be there shortly. Bye, until I get there."
"Bye, until you get here."
I hung up and left my house. I drove straight to our local police station. After parking my Jeep in the parking lot, to the police station, I got out and walked up to the front desk. Every person in the building stopped what they were doing and turned to stare at me. When everyone began whispering to each other, Nathan stood up and motioned me over to his cubicle.
I walked past the front desk lady, past all the eyes staring at me, past everyone whispering and sat down by Nathan. When I moved the chair to by Nathan, on his side of his desk, and we kissed, the whispering grew louder. Finally, when I looked at everyone, they stopped whispering about me, and maybe me with Nathan, to each other. I looked at Nathan and he nodded. Like he knew what I was looking at him for.
"Hi, everyone. Yes. I'm the Grace Starlin. And yes. Me and Nathan, I mean Detective Brooks, are in a relationship together. So, now that you know this, you can stop whispering. You can also go back to what you were doing. So, Detective Brooks. Ready to do this?"
"I'm ready. Let's do this. She's this way." Nathan led me to his boss's office and knocked on her door. "Hi. Sergeant McMiller? May we come in and talk to you?"
"We? Who's with you, Detective Brooks?"
"I am." I said walking into Sergeant McMiller's office.
"Grace Starlin. Oh. My. God. Come in. Come in. And shut the door behind you." Sergeant McMiller said, smiling.
Nathan walked in behind me and closed the door.
"May I tell you why I have Ms. Starlin here, in your office, with me today?"
"Go ahead, Detective Brooks."
"Well, Sergeant McMiller, yesterday I ran into Ms. Starlin at the Mall, where you had me patrolling, like literally ran into her. It was love at first sight. So, we spent the night together and I made breakfast for us this morning. Then, just a little bit ago, she called me and invited me to her parents' Valentine's day party tomorrow. So, in conclusion, I was hoping you would allow me to take tomorrow off. I'd really appreciate it if you'd let me go to her parents' party with her. I told her I'd love to go, but I needed your permission for the day off first. What do you say? Can I?"
"So, Ms. Starlin, you two just met yesterday, after literally running into each other, and you're both deeply in love with each other?"
"Yes. That's true, Sergeant McMiller."
"Okay. And you invited Detective Brooks to go with you to your parents' Valentine's day party tomorrow?"
"Yes. That's also true."
"Okay. So, where will this party be taking place? And who else will be there?"
"The party is taking place at the town hall. My parents told me, my younger brother and my younger sister that it's for family and friends, but we can invite whoever else we want to. So, I invited my crew and Detective Brooks. I plan on singing one, or more, of my love songs at the party tomorrow, with my crew, so I wanted this man with me there. I told my parents I have a special someone coming with me. So, I'd also appreciate it if you let him have the day off to be at the party with me tomorrow."
"Okay. Okay. I'll let you go to the party tomorrow, with Ms. Starlin, and have the day off. But, only on one condition. I get to come to this party, too. Do we have a deal, then?"
"We have a deal. Bring your husband, assuming you have one, and your kids, if you have any, along with you."
"Okay. Be there tomorrow."
"Thank you, Sergeant McMiller. We deeply appreciate this. Now, since it's my lunch break, can I take Ms. Starlin out to lunch?"
"As long as she's okay with that."
"I'd love that. But I get to choose where we go."
"Alright." We walked out of Sergeant McMiller's office, then stopped at Nathan's cubicle. He grabbed his detective coat and we left the building. We got into his detective's car and then, before driving off, he turned to me and grabbed my hands, smiling from ear to ear. "I can't believe she allowed it just like that."
"Neither can I." I said, smiling ear to ear now, too. After we kissed, for what seemed like a minute or two, I broke away from his embrace. My stomach began growling and I laughed. "I guess my stomach is telling us to get going."
"Sure sounds like it. So, where to?"
"Have you ever been to the restaurant Millie's?"
"No. Well, I guess we're going to Millie's for lunch."
