WHEN POWER SLEEP'S

796 Words
Aria woke to silence. Not the comforting kind, but the deep, unnatural quiet that pressed against her ears. For a moment, she forgot where she was—or who she was. Then memory rushed back all at once: the shadows, the light bursting from her chest, Kael’s shocked voice. Her eyes flew open. She lay on a narrow bed surrounded by pale blue curtains that fluttered softly, though there was no wind. The room smelled faintly of herbs and something metallic, like rain after lightning. She tried to sit up. Pain shot through her chest, sharp enough to steal her breath. “Easy.” Kael’s voice. She turned her head. He stood beside the bed, arms crossed, his expression unreadable but his eyes alert—relieved. “How long was I out?” Aria asked, her voice hoarse. “Several hours,” he replied. “The fortress is secure now.” Her fingers curled into the blankets. “The shadows… did anyone get hurt?” Kael hesitated. “Some guards were injured. No one was lost.” Relief washed through her so fast it made her dizzy. “I did that,” she whispered. “Didn’t I?” Kael didn’t deny it. “Yes.” She closed her eyes. “I didn’t mean to. It just—happened.” “That’s how awakening begins,” he said quietly. She looked back at him. “Awakening what?” Kael stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Something that was sleeping inside you. Something ancient.” Her heart pounded. “So the elder was right. I’m really… connected to all this.” “You are,” he said. “But not in the way you think.” --- The Truth the Elders Feared Later that night, Aria was brought to the council chamber. The elders sat in a wide circle, their faces half-hidden by shadow and firelight. Elder Mara stood at the center. “The light you released,” Mara said, “was not elemental.” Aria stiffened. “Then what was it?” Mara’s gaze sharpened. “It was binding energy—the same force used to seal the Whispered King centuries ago.” The room murmured with unease. Kael’s head snapped up. “That’s impossible.” “It isn’t,” Mara replied calmly. “It means the prophecy is deeper than we believed.” Aria’s chest tightened. “What does that mean for me?” Mara stepped closer. “It means you are not meant to free the Whispered King.” Silence fell. “You are meant to replace the seal.” Aria felt like the ground had vanished beneath her feet. “I don’t understand,” she said. “Replace it how?” “With your life force,” one of the elders said gravely. Kael took a step forward. “No.” Mara raised a hand. “Not now. Not yet. But the path of the Linked One has never been gentle.” Aria’s hands trembled. “So this power… it’s killing me?” “No,” Mara said. “But it will change you.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “And if we refuse this path?” “Then the Whispered King will rise fully,” Mara answered. “And both worlds will burn.” The words echoed in Aria’s mind long after the council dismissed her. --- A Quiet Moment Later, Aria stood alone on a balcony overlooking the sleeping forest. Moonlight spilled over the trees, silver and cold. She hugged her arms around herself, trying to feel normal again. Footsteps approached. Kael stopped beside her, not too close. “They shouldn’t have said that to you,” he muttered. “They had to,” she replied softly. “It’s the truth, isn’t it?” Kael stared out into the forest. “Truth doesn’t mean destiny.” She studied him. “You don’t believe the prophecy.” “I believe in choice,” he said. “And I believe you are more than what ancient words claim.” Her throat tightened. “What if I hurt someone again?” Kael turned to her then, serious. “Then I’ll be there to stop it.” She almost smiled. “Why are you really helping me, Kael?” she asked. “You could have handed me over to the elders.” His answer came after a long pause. “Because when the relic called you… it didn’t sound like a threat.” She frowned. “What did it sound like?” “Like a plea.” The forest rustled below them. Far away, something ancient stirred. And Aria felt it—deep in her chest—something shifting again, no longer asleep, no longer silent. The Whispered King was not fully awake. But he was listening.
