Kate POV
“Wait.” Jake interrupted, calmly. “We need to move her somewhere where her powers will be blocked.”
“What powers?” Ben asked, confused.
“Well, from what Dr Jenkins told us, Kate has the power to control emotions, and change memories.” Jake answered.
“Why didn’t I know that?” Ben yelled, frustrated. “Of course I wouldn’t know that, because how could she manipulate me if I did. Argh!” He was furious.
I watched quietly from the bed, feeling immense guilt. I knew that once he was aware of the full extent of my crimes, I would be banished, maybe even killed. I looked down to my hands in my lap and vowed I would avoid telling the whole truth at all costs.
Ben was pacing the room, his food long forgotten on the table. His green eyes flashed angrily, his lips pressed in a tight grimace. He turned suddenly to Jase.
“Have her taken to the dungeons. The room we use for witches and warlocks. I’m about to have the omegas clear her s**t out of my bedroom and scrub the place with bleach. I don’t want a single trace of her to remain there.”
I swallowed, hard, and a lone tear fell from my eye. Over the years I had grown to love Ben for more than just his title, which was all I had initially wanted. It hurt that he was throwing me to one side this way, but I wasn’t in any position to fight him on it, and I couldn’t do it now he knew of my powers. Everything I had done was to gain the Luna title, but once I found myself finding real love, I risked it all to keep the lie going.
Warriors entered the hospital room, lining the walls with grim expressions. None of them would make eye contact with me, and I knew that as their Luna I could command them to stand down, but what would be the point? As soon as Maria worked out she had the power to delve through people’s memories, I’d be done for. I may as well get up and go quietly.
I shifted in the bed as I swung my legs over the side and stood to my feet.
“I’ll go quietly.” I told Ben, and he wouldn’t even look at me. The bond was irreparable, I knew that much.
The warriors flanked me on each side, and began the journey down to the packhouse cells. The moon was high in the sky, which meant only the night staff would be around to witness my disgrace. I listened to the whispers and raised my chin defiantly. They didn’t have to understand my actions, they were only servants set to obey instructions. I hadn’t ever liked them, anyway. Their opinions of me were irrelevant.
The head warrior, Forest, unlocked the cell and I walked inside. The bed was chained to the wall, a thin mattress rested upon it. There was a steel bowl toilet in the corner with no lid, and a basin for water. The room was designed to be escape proof, and no kind of magic would work here. I sighed, then took a seat on the bed.
“Goodnight, Luna.” He spoke gruffly, locking the cell door.
“Goodnight, Forest.”
I lay down, facing the wall. How quickly everything had crumbled.
Jake POV
Ben sank down in the chair and sighed. His eyes were tired, and he was pale.
“Ben, if you don’t mind, Jase and I can handle the interrogation tomorrow?” I offered him, feeling bad.
“Yeah, dad. This isn’t something you have to do alone.” Jase chimed in.
“Thank you, boys. I really appreciate that. After bailing on my guests today, I think they would appreciate my attendance at the pack meetings tomorrow. Jase, could you see to it that Matt attends in your absence, and Jake, if you could send Noah I would be grateful. We must put on a united front, despite all of this.” He waved around him, gesturing to the recent events.
“Of course.” I answered him, and Noah nodded in agreement. “Whatever you need, just let us know and we will make it happen.”
“Do you want me to walk you back to your room, pops?” Jase asked his dad.
“Nah, it’s alright. I’m sure the Omegas will have the place scrubbed clean by the time I get back, and if they haven’t, I’m sure Harry has a spare bed on his floor.” He answered tiredly.
I signalled to Noah that it was time for us to go. I could see that Jase wanted to speak to his dad privately, and I wasn’t going to begrudge him that.
“Goodnight, Alpha, future Alpha.” Noah addressed Ben and Jase.
“Goodnight. We’ll see you early tomorrow. Maria is welcome to attend the meetings too, by the way.” He added, and I nodded.
I knew the real reason that he didn’t want Maria with us when we spoke to Kate was mainly because he didn’t want her to witness any torture that took place, but also because Bella was a wild card, and we didn’t know how she would behave. Whilst it was her courage and strength I admired, I was quickly learning that Bella’s anger led her to being irrational, which meant potentially stupid. She still shared Maria’s body, and whilst Maria was clearly the more balanced of the two personalities, she wasn’t yet fully able to harness her power. She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself for accidentally hurting anyone, and I couldn’t let that happen.
We left the room and walked silently until we reached the pack grounds.
“What a crazy day.” Noah sighed.
“Tell me about it.” I responded.
“So how do you really feel about the two mates situation?” He asked me suddenly.
“I don’t really know.” I answered honestly.
“When Matt touched me earlier, I felt the same sparks I felt when Maria touches me. But it’s so weird, because I don’t swing that way. I’m not the least bit sexually attracted to him, and I get the feeling he feels the same way.” I finished.
“Hmm, that’s an odd one. Maybe it’s worth finding another throuple to ask?” He asked, seriously.
“Throuple? Seriously?” I laughed at him.
“What? That’s what you are, right?” He defended, laughing.
“No! We’re just two guys mated to the same girl. We’re not in a relationship with each other!” I retorted.
“Alright, alright! I get it.” Noah backed off.
“Seriously though, what are we gunna do? We can’t have a Luna in two packs. Maybe we could find a way to get them to reject one another?” He said, quietly.
“Are you f*****g crazy?” I growled. “How dare you suggest I force my mate to break her own heart, purely for convenience!”
“Woah, calm down. I wasn’t being serious!” He surrendered, hands in the air.
“Good. Now f**k off to bed, Noah. Pack training starts at 5am and you’re booked in with Jamie to spar.”
Noah groaned, and I grinned to myself. Serves him right!
“Goodnight, Boss.” He saluted then took off to the guest wing.
I walked the rest of the corridor quietly, mentally preparing myself for what I might find when I opened my own bedroom door. I stopped in front of the polished wood, and braced myself.
I couldn’t hear any signs of Matt pounding Maria, so I knocked gently and opened the door. I walked into the room, and found Maria curled up in Matt’s lap, both asleep. The film they had been watching was playing quietly, so I decided not to disturb them. I pulled a soft blanket off of Matt’s makeshift bed and placed it over them both, to keep them warm. It was strange, whilst I definitely was not in love with Matt, I still cared about him. Maybe it was because of how much I loved Maria, and how much she cared for him.
I walked over quietly to the bed and found Maria had folded up my pj shorts and put them under my pillow. I grabbed them and tiptoed quietly to the bathroom. I needed a shower after the day I’d had.
