You walk and walk, your boots crunching frantically through the fresh snow sticking to the cobblestones and then the dirt paths. You don't look back. Your breath is heaving in ragged, ghostly plumes against the winter chill, but you keep going, driven entirely by panic and heartbreak. You head straight for the tree line at the edge of the valley, pushing past the frost-laden branches until your legs simply have nothing left to give.
Exhausted, you lean your back against the rough bark of a massive pine tree and slowly sink down into the snow.
And then, the tears pour out.
The pain is physical, tearing through your chest. You had just given him everything. You had trusted him with a sacred, vulnerable piece of yourself, only to hear that the very bed you shared was just a rerun of a casual tavern fling. To hear that something so deeply intimate to you was seemingly nothing to him. As much as you hate Maeve for her cruelty, your heart breaks for her too, because you can only imagine the cold rejection of waking up to a lonely room and a coin on a nightstand. That level of callousness is something you never could have imagined Kaelen doing.
And what is stopping him from doing that to me? Your mind races in a terrifying, chaotic spiral. How am I different? Am I just an escape goat to a life he never truly loved? Can he even love me the way he claims? Or am I just the next one who will wake up to a coin on the table?
You cry heavily, great, racking sobs that shake your entire frame. The combination of your intense hunger, the freezing cold, and the sheer emotional trauma completely drains the last of your energy. Your eyelids grow impossibly heavy. Without even realizing the mortal danger of the freezing temperatures, your body gives in to the exhaustion. You slump sideways into the soft, white snow, your golden hair spilling over the frost, and drift into a deep, perilous sleep.
You don't know how much time passes before the silence of the woods is shattered.
"IRIS!!!"
A desperate, raw, and utterly panicked roar echoes through the trees, throwing the local wildlife into flight. Heavy, frantic footsteps come crashing through the underbrush, snapping branches and tearing through the deep snow.
Through the heavy fog of your hypothermic sleep, you suddenly feel massive, trembling hands slide beneath your shoulders and knees. You are violently, desperately yanked up out of the freezing snow and pulled into a chest that is heaving and radiating a terrifyingly frantic heat.
"No, no, no... Iris, open your eyes! Red, please, look at me!"
Kaelen’s voice is completely broken, stripped entirely of its usual calm authority. He is shaking violently—not from the cold, but from the sheer, paralyzing terror of finding you like this. He wraps his heavy winter cloak around your freezing body, pulling you so tight against his chest it almost hurts, his face burying into your icy neck as a ragged, choked sob escapes him.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, please don't leave me," he begs into your skin, his hands desperately rubbing your arms to bring the heat back to your body. "It's not what she said, Red... please, just wake up..."
"I'm awake! I'm fine!" you yell, your voice cracking as a violent, uncontrollable shiver wracks your entire body.
The paralyzing sadness from moments ago flashes instantly into a blinding, white-hot fury. Driven by pure survival instinct and absolute rage, you summon a sudden burst of adrenaline. You push against his massive chest with everything you have, tearing yourself out of his trembling grip.
You drag yourself up by the rough bark of the pine tree, your legs shaking like reeds in the wind. Your lips are a stark, icy blue, and you fiercely wipe the frost off your nose and cheeks with the back of a frozen hand. Refusing to look at him, you turn your back and begin stubbornly stumbling through the deep snow, tracking your own footprints back toward the distant, warm lights of the tavern.
"Iris, stop! You're freezing!" Kaelen pleads, stepping after you instantly. He reaches out, his hands hovering centimetres from your shoulders, terrified to touch you but terrified to let you fall. "You can barely walk, let me—"
"Don't touch me!" you snap, the cold air biting at your lungs as you force one numb foot in front of the other. You stagger, nearly losing your balance in a snowdrift, but your sheer, stubborn pride keeps you upright. You keep pushing forward, desperate to put distance between yourself and the man who just broke your heart, even if it means marching through a winter storm with blue lips and a freezing body.
Kaelen walks right beside you, completely miserable, his broad chest heaving as he uses his massive frame to block the biting wind from hitting you directly.
"I'm not going to force you," he says, his gravelly voice thick with a desperate, raw pain. "But please... just listen to me while we walk. Don't shut me out, Red. Please."
You stop dead in your tracks, the biting wind howling around you, but the storm inside your chest is infinitely louder. You turn to face him, your tear-stained eyes completely bloodshot, wild with a devastating mix of confusion, raw hurt, and a fierce, unyielding anger. But beneath the fury, burning bright and terrifying, is an undeniable, desperate longing.
"If I had any sense," you choke out, your voice trembling violently as a fresh wave of hot tears cuts tracks through the frost on your cheeks, "I would get on Marigold right now and run for the hills. I would leave you in the dirt and never look back."
You take a ragged, shivering breath, your fists clenching so hard your nails bite into your numb palms.
"But I can't," you whisper, the admission ripping out of you like a confession of guilt. "I can't leave. And that hurts even more, Kaelen. I’ve lost all my sense. I’ve lost my logic, my boundaries, everything that kept me safe before I met you. I don't even recognize myself right now, and that scares me more than the cold ever could."
Kaelen flinches as if you had struck him across the face. The raw agony in his moss-green eyes is devastating. He takes a single, agonizingly slow step closer, keeping his hands open and raised in absolute surrender, refusing to crowd you but desperate to anchor you.
"Then let me be your logic right now, Red," he begs, his gravelly voice cracking completely as he blinks back his own tears. "Because my logic, my heart, my entire damn life starts and ends with you. What Maeve said... it was a weapon. She wanted to destroy what we have because she knows I look at you the way I have never looked at another soul in my entire miserable existence."
He steps close enough that you can feel the staggering heat radiating off his body, shielding you from the bitter mountain gale.
"That night with her was years ago, before I ever knew you existed, and it was a mistake born of loneliness and a dark head," he says, his voice thick with a profound, desperate urgency. "I left a coin because it was a business transaction to me, a meaningless distraction. I didn't stay because there was nothing there to stay for. But with you? Iris, I didn't just stay the night—I want to stay for the rest of my life. You aren't my escape goat. You are my home. I have never loved anyone the way I love you. Please... let me bring you inside. Let me keep you warm, and I will spend every single day proving to you why you are different."
The confession hangs in the freezing air, heavier and more fragile than the snow falling around you.
"My whole life, people have left me," you whisper, your voice cracking with the weight of a lifetime of abandonment. "Which is why it has always been easier to avoid it... by shutting people out."
You look up at him, the raw, agonizing vulnerability plain across your face. It is the ultimate surrender—not to the cold, but to the terrifying reality that you have given this man the power to completely destroy you, and you are choosing to trust him anyway.
With a slight, trembling breath, you give him a small nod.
Kaelen lets out a choked, ragged sound—halfway between a sob and a sigh of profound relief. He doesn't hesitate for another second. He steps forward and sweeps you up into his massive arms, lifting you completely out of the freezing snow. He pulls you so tightly against his chest that you can feel the frantic, booming rhythm of his heart against your cheek.
"I am never leaving you, Iris. Never," he swears fiercely into your wet hair, his voice thick with emotion as he turns and begins marching back toward the tavern with long, urgent strides.
He kicks the heavy front door open, entirely ignoring the few patrons who stare, and storming right past a pale, visibly shaken Maeve without giving her so much as a glance. He carries you straight up the stairs, kicks open the door to Room Four, and shuts it firmly behind you, locking out the rest of the world.
The room is still thick with the fading steam of the bath and the roaring heat of the hearth. Kaelen gently sets you down on the edge of the bed, immediately dropping to his knees before you. His large, warm hands frantically but gently begin stripping off your frozen, wet boots and socks, rubbing your numb feet between his calloused palms to bring the blood rushing back.
He looks up at you, his moss-green eyes rimmed with red, filled with a fierce, unwavering devotion.
"I've got you, Red," he murmurs, his hands sliding up to cup your freezing face, his thumbs gently wiping away the fresh tears spilling over your cheeks. "You're safe. I'm right here."
You look past his broad shoulder, your gaze hollowly fixing on the frosted glass of the windowpane where the winter storm is still lashing against the room.
"It's not only my feet feeling numb," you whisper, your voice barely a breath, flat and detached. "I feel numb. All over."
You look down at his large hands still desperately trying to rub the life back into yours, but you can barely feel the friction. The physical cold is nothing compared to the sudden, icy vacuum in your chest.
"I was so incredibly happy this morning," you murmur, the sheer bewilderment of it making your chest ache. "Blissful. How could that disappear so quickly?"
It’s the cruellest part of trauma—the whiplash. One moment you were floating in a warm bubble of safety and first love, and the next, you were plunged right back into the familiar, freezing waters of your past. The emotional drop has left your brain completely short-circuited.
Kaelen stops rubbing your hands. The utter despair that crosses his rugged face at your empty, detached tone is gut-wrenching. He realizes that your anger was actually easier to handle; this quiet, hollow numbness means your mind is actively trying to lock itself away in a vault to protect you from more pain.
Slowly, deliberately, he climbs onto the mattress. He doesn't try to initiate anything passionate; instead, he gently wraps his massive arms around you from behind, pulling your back flush against his broad, radiating chest. He pulls the heavy, dry woollen blankets all the way up over both of your shoulders, burying you both in a dark, safe cocoon of warmth.
"Because a wound hurts worse when you're caught off guard, Red," he whispers roughly, his chin resting gently on the top of your head. He holds you tight, letting his steady, powerful heartbeat pace your own shallow breathing. "You let your guard down for the first time, and someone used your own happiness to strike at you. It disappeared quickly because you were trying to protect yourself the only way you knew how."
He presses his lips to the side of your head, his voice trembling. "But I'm holding onto you. You don't have to feel anything right now. Just let me get you warm, Iris. I'm not going anywhere."
The sudden, sharp rap of knuckles against the heavy timber door cuts through the quiet room like a slap.
You let out a low, exhausted groan, the spell of the quiet cocoon broken as you reluctantly sit up. The numbness is still there, lingering like a heavy fog, but the intrusion brings a dull spark of irritation back to your senses.
Behind you, Kaelen’s entire body goes rigid. His arms loosen around you just enough to let you sit up, but his moss-green eyes snap toward the locked door, instantly darkening with a dangerous, protective heat. He looks like a wolf whose den has just been threatened.
"Stay under the blankets," he mutters, his gravelly voice incredibly low and rough.
He slips out of the bed, the mattress shifting under his weight as he steps onto the cold floorboards. He doesn't bother putting his tunic back on; he doesn't need it. His broad, heavily scarred chest and the sheer, lethal tension in his posture are more than enough of a warning for whoever is on the other side.
He strides across the room, his movements silent and predatory, and grips the iron key in the lock. He turns it with a heavy click and cracks the door open just enough to block the opening with his massive frame.
"What?" he barks, his voice a sub-zero rumble that would make a lesser person drop to their knees.
Kaelen stands frozen, his hand still gripping the heavy iron latch as he stares out into the empty, dimly lit hallway.
There is no one there.
The floorboards don’t creak, and there’s no sound of rushing footsteps fading down the stairs. The corridor is completely vacant, save for a slight, icy draft whistling through the floorboards.
His brow furrows, a deep, wary scowl settling into his features as his eyes sweep the shadows of the hallway. For a second, he doesn't move, his predatory instincts on absolute high alert. Then, his gaze drops to the floor right in front of the threshold.
Nestled on the wooden floorboards directly outside the door is a large, heavy tray.
On it sits the breakfast Maeve had promised: a fresh, steaming mountain of scrambled eggs, thick-cut sizzling bacon, a loaf of crusty, warm bread, and a small pot of hot tea. Next to the plate rests a small, neatly folded piece of parchment.
Kaelen’s jaw tightens. He reaches down, picking up the heavy tray with one hand, and steps back into the room, kicking the heavy timber door shut and locking it securely behind him.
He sets the tray down on the small table by the hearth, the rich, savoury smell of the food instantly filling the room, contrasting sharply with the heavy, emotional tension lingering in the air. He picks up the small piece of parchment, unfolding it with rough, calloused fingers. His moss-green eyes scan the quick, shaky handwriting.
After a beat, he lets out a low, heavy breath and looks over at you, sitting wrapped in the blankets on the bed.
"It was Maeve," he says quietly, his gravelly voice losing its lethal edge, replaced by a complex mix of gravity and quiet understanding. He walks over, holding out the note so you can see it if you want to. "She left the food. The note just says... 'I'm sorry. The room is paid for. Eat.'"
He sets the note on the nightstand and sits down on the edge of the mattress, looking at you with endless patience. "She's a bitter woman, Red, but it seems she realized the weight of what she did. The food is hot. You need to eat."
