Chapter 22

1155 Words
The world outside this small room completely drops away. The biting mountain wind, the lingering ghosts of his past, and the chaotic haze vanishing into the background. In this firelit space, with the steady thrum of his heart beneath your palms, everything finally feels right. It feels natural. It feels entirely yours. You slide your hands up his broad chest, the thick fabric of his shirt bunching beneath your fingers. Your movements are slow, deliberate, and charged with a quiet confidence you didn't know you possessed. Your piercing grey eyes hold his with unyielding focus as you push the hem of his shirt upward, asking him to let it go. In perfect synchronization, Kaelen raises his arms, letting you lift the garment over his head and toss it to the floor. The firelight dances across the sharp lines of his shoulders and the rugged contours of his chest, making him look almost ethereal in the amber glow. Without breaking eye contact, you reach for the heavy clasp of your riding cloak. You undo it with a faint click, letting the heavy wool slide off your shoulders to pool around your boots. Kaelen’s breath hitches, a low, ragged sound caught in his throat. His moss-green eyes darken with a fierce, intoxicating intensity as he watches you. He reaches out, his large, calloused hands settling onto your bare waist, his thumbs tracing the curve of your hips with a reverence that borders on worship. "Iris," he breathes, his voice rougher and deeper than you’ve ever heard it, entirely captivated by the woman standing before him. He doesn't rush you. He just holds you there, letting the heat between you build, waiting for your next move. Your piercing grey eyes hold his, stripping away the last remaining defences between you. With the firelight casting long, flickering shadows across the room, you give him a gentle, steady nod. It’s a quiet declaration—a signal that the doubts have cleared, the noise of the past has burned away, and you are entirely ready. Kaelen’s gaze softens with profound gratitude, though the intensity behind his moss-green eyes doesn't waver for a second. He handles you as if you are the most precious thing he has ever been trusted with, yet there is a raw, undeniable hunger in the way his hands tighten against your waist. "I've got you, Red," he whispers against your lips, his gravelly voice thick and laced with a fierce promise. He sweeps you up effortlessly, your feet leaving the floor as he carries you the short distance to the large, welcoming bed. The thick woollen blankets dip under your weight as he lays you down, hovering over you like a shield against the rest of the world. Every touch that follows is slow, deliberate, and entirely focused on erasing any lingering shadow of doubt from your mind. There is no rush, no practiced performance—just the heavy, intoxicating reality of his skin against yours, his heartbeat matching the frantic, eager rhythm of your own. As his lips trace a path from your jaw down to the hollow of your throat, the knot that had plagued you all day completely unravels, replaced by a consuming, breathless warmth that belongs to nobody else but the two of you. Your eyes remain closed, completely surrendered to the sensation of him. Every press of his lips, every heavy glide of his hands against your skin, and every shift of his weight carries a profound, unyielding intensity that fills the quiet room. The world is reduced to the crackle of the hearth and the ragged sound of his breathing against your neck. Slowly, your hands map their way up the broad expanse of his back. Your fingertips trace the rugged terrain of his skin, feeling the faint, raised lines of old scars—remnants of a dangerous life he lived long before he ever knew your name. But they don't frighten you; they just feel like a roadmap that brought him safely to this exact moment. Your hands slide higher, smoothing over his tense shoulders until your fingers bury themselves deep into the thick, dark strands of his hair. With a sudden spike of deliberate desire, you curl your fingers and give a gentle, firm tug. Kaelen lets out a low, breathless groan deep in his throat at the demand. He obeys instantly, his body sinking entirely into yours as he brings his lips back up to crash against yours. This kiss is different—it's deeper, hungrier, and entirely stripped of any remaining caution. He binds his hands with yours, pinning your fingers into the soft mattress above your head, completely enveloping you in his warmth as the firelight casts a long, unbroken shadow of the two of you against the timber wall. “Am I doing it right?” I ask him softly between rapid breaths. Kaelen breaks the kiss just an inch, his breathing every bit as rapid and shallow as yours. He rests his forehead against yours, his chest heaving against your own as he looks down at you through a dark fringe of messy hair. For a second, he just stares at you, his moss-green eyes completely blown out, filled with an intensity that is almost overwhelming. Then, a soft, incredibly tender smile breaks through the fiercely dark look on his face. "Iris," he breathes, his gravelly voice dropping into a rough, trembling whisper. He releases one of your hands, bringing his large, warm palm up to cup your cheek, his thumb gently wiping a bead of sweat from your temple. "You are doing everything perfectly. There is no 'right' way to be with me. Just this... just you." He leans down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the corner of your mouth, then another to your jaw, his lips moving with a deliberate, unhurried sweetness to soothe the sudden wave of vulnerability in your voice. "You're driving me absolutely crazy, Red," he murmurs against your skin, a low, breathless chuckle vibrating in his chest. "If you do it any more 'right,' I'm not going to survive the night. Just follow me. I've got you." He locks his fingers back with yours, his body sinking back down into yours with a slow, heavy certainty that banishes the question entirely from your mind. A soft, startled gasp escapes Kaelen’s lips as you grip his broad shoulders and, with a sudden burst of fierce determination, roll him onto his back. Before he can even process the shift, you climb on top of him, straddling his hips. With slow, trembling fingers, you remove the very last of your garments, letting the fabric slide away until you are completely bare. The sudden shock of the room's cool air hits your skin, raising faint goosebumps, while your long, golden locks tumble down your back and shoulders like a protective silk curtain. For a single, breathless second, you feel incredibly powerful.
