Chapter 7

2116 Words
He doesn't use a key. He reaches into a loose brick beside the door, pulls out an iron pin, and slips it into a hidden mechanism. With a soft, muffled click, the heavy wooden door swings inward. He pulls you inside and shuts it immediately, throwing three separate iron bolts into place. The safehouse is pitch black, but the air inside is completely dry and smells faintly of old pine and cedar. It’s entirely safe. Kaelen doesn't waste a single second. He guides you over to a plush, heavy armchair in front of a stone hearth and gently pushes you down into it. "Stay right here," he whispers. You hear him moving frantically in the dark—the rustle of dry kindling, the strike of flint and steel, a shower of bright orange sparks. Within moments, a tiny flame catches, rapidly growing into a roaring, crackling fire that floods the small room with brilliant, amber warmth. Kaelen walks back over to you, dropping to his knees right in front of your chair. He takes both of your freezing hands in his, rubbing them vigorously to bring the circulation back, his moss-green eyes searching your face with fierce devotion. "I told you," he breathes, a soft, triumphant smile finally breaking through his exhaustion. "The biggest fire you've ever seen. You're safe, Iris. We're out of the dark." A soft, breathless laugh escapes you, the heavy fog of exhaustion and terror finally lifting from your chest. You look down at him kneeling before you in the dancing amber firelight, your heart swelling with a warmth that has absolutely nothing to do with the hearth. Slowly, you slip one of your hands from his grasp and reach up, running your fingers through his thick, dark locks. The strands are still cool and slightly damp from the sea mist, but they feel incredibly soft between your fingers. Your hand slides gently down the side of his face, your palm cupping his strong, stubbled jawline. You trace the sharp line of his cheekbone before letting your thumb drift inward, brushing ever so softly across his lower lip. Kaelen’s breath hitches. The vigorous rubbing of your hands stops instantly. His entire body stills under your touch, his moss-green eyes darkening with a sudden, intense heat that completely strips away the hardened thief. He doesn't pull away; instead, he leans his face into your palm, closing his eyes for a long, quiet second just to savour the tenderness of it. When he opens his eyes again, they are locked entirely onto yours, burning with a vulnerability he usually keeps buried a thousand fathoms deep. "You're going to make it very hard for me to be a responsible protector, gold-locks," he murmurs, his voice dropping into a low, rough growl that vibrates against your thumb. Slowly, without breaking eye contact, he reaches up and wraps his large hand over yours, holding it against his cheek. He leans forward, his forehead coming to rest gently against your knee as he lets out a long, shuddering sigh of pure relief. "We lost everything out there today," he whispers softly into the fabric of your robe. "Your shop, my crew... everything. But sitting here right now? I feel like I've never been richer." You slide down from the plush armchair, the lavender velvet of your robe pooling around you as you sink onto the floor right beside him. The stone hearth radiates an intense, wrapping heat, but the truest warmth is the solid weight of his shoulder shifting to meet yours. "I agree," you whisper. Kaelen lifts his head, a look of quiet surprise melting into something deeply profound as he watches you join him on his level. He doesn't say a word—he doesn't need to. He simply opens his arm, and you slide perfectly into his side, your head finding its familiar, comforting place in the notch of his shoulder. His strong-arm winds securely around your waist, pulling you so close that there is no space left between you. He rests his chin against the top of your head, his chest rising and falling in a slow, peaceful rhythm that matches your own. Between you on the floor, the hidden velvet box in your pocket casts a faint, ethereal golden hue that mingles with the dancing crimson shadows of the fire. The city below is chaotic, the guards are searching, and your old life is gone—but inside this hidden stone sanctuary, the world has narrowed down to just the two of you, safely tucked away out of the dark. "How long do you think we can stay here?" Kaelen is quiet for a long moment, his chest rising and falling beneath you in a slow, steady rhythm. His fingers trace light, comforting circles against the velvet of your robe, his eyes fixed on the dancing flames of the hearth. "A few days," he says softly, his voice a low rumble against your hair. "Maybe a week if we’re careful. I kept this place off the grid for a reason—none of my old crew knows it exists, and the Guard won't think to look for a couple of dock-dwellers up in the cliff-side ruins this quickly." He shifts slightly, tightening his grip around your waist just a fraction, as if reminding himself that you are really there. "But the city will get smaller by the day," he continues, his tone shifting into that grounded, practical register of a survivalist. "The Magistrate will keep pushing the Guard to find that star shard, and my old captain isn't the type to let a grudge go. We'll need to rest up, gather some supplies, and figure out a plan to get past the city walls." He tilts his head down, his lips brushing against the top of your head. "But don't worry about that right now, gold-locks. For today, the door is barred, the fire is hot, and nobody knows where we are. We have all the time we need to just... breathe." "And to think, If you had been a tad bit faster I wouldn’t have trapped you in that tavern with my dagger." Kaelen lets out a low, sudden laugh that vibrates right through his chest, the sound rich with genuine amusement. He shakes his head, his chin brushing against your hair as he looks down at you with a wicked, teasing glint in his moss-green eyes. "Oh, is that how you remember it?" he murmurs, his roguish smirk returning in full force. "A tad bit faster? Gold-locks, I’ll have you know my reflexes are legendary in the lower docks. I was just... assessing the threat." He squeezes your waist, pulling you a little tighter against him as if to prove he’s not going anywhere now. "Besides," he continues, his voice dropping into a softer, playful rumble, "if I had stepped a fraction to the left and dodged that blade, I would’ve walked right out that door, missed out on a heist, a cavern monster, a dive into an icy harbour, and a beautiful daughter of a star." He tilts your chin up gently with his index finger, forcing your grey eyes to meet his in the warm firelight. "So, remind me to thank your terrible aim later," he whispers, a tender smile breaking through his teasing. "Because getting trapped by your dagger was the best damn luck I’ve ever had." Your gasp of pure, wounded pride practically echoes in the quiet stone cottage. "Terrible aim?" you echo, pulling back just enough to glare up at him with mock indignation. "Have you completely lost your mind?! My aim is impeccable... no... extraordinary! I could make that throw in my sleep!" Kaelen’s roguish grin only widens, his moss-green eyes crinkling at the corners with pure delight as he watches you fire up. He loves when that fierce, sharp-tongued apothecary comes out to play. "Oh, extraordinary, is it?" he asks, his voice dripping with playful scepticism. He raises an eyebrow, leaning back against the armchair while keeping his arm loosely looped around your waist. "My apologies, your Highness of the Blades. Here I was thinking it was beginner's luck, considering the dagger vibrated in the wood for about three solid minutes after it landed." He reaches out, his fingers gently poking your side to tease you. "Impeccable aim would have pinned my cloak without taking a thread out of it," he chuckles, his tone dropping into a warm, velvety whisper. "But hey, if you're that confident, maybe once the heat dies down, we can find a nice brick wall and you can prove it to me. Just... promise you won't aim for the face? I'd hate to ruin my only good feature." "It’s not your only good feature" Kaelen freezes mid-laugh, the cocky retort dying instantly on his lips. For all his smooth-talking swagger, your quiet, devastating honesty catches him completely off guard. The teasing glint in his moss-green eyes shifts into something much darker, heavier, and intensely focused as his gaze drops to your lips, then rises back to meet your eyes. The silence stretches between you, thick with the crackle of the fire and the sudden, electric charge in the air. "Is that so?" he murmurs. His voice has completely lost its playful edge, dropping into a low, rough velvet register that sends a distinct shiver straight down your spine. Slowly, his hand slides from your waist up to the small of your back, his touch firm and possessive through the lavender velvet as he coaxes you just an inch closer. His other hand reaches up, his knuckles gently tracing the soft line of your jaw, his thumb coming to rest at the corner of your mouth. He is looking at you like you are the only thing left in a crumbling world. "And what else, pray tell, made the list, apothecary?" he whispers, his breath warm against your lips, a tiny, breathless smirk playing at the edge of his mouth. "Don't stop now. I'm a fugitive with a bruised ego; I need the details." "Your eyes..." I whisper, holding his gaze. "They're full of emotion. They tell a hundred stories no book ever could." I take his hand in mine, slowly tracing every callus and every line with my fingertips. "Your hands..." I murmur, smiling softly. "They tell me how hard you work for the people you love." My touch drifts up the length of his arm to his shoulder, lingering there. "These shoulders..." I say quietly. "They're so strong, carrying the weight of the world without complaint." Finally, my fingers rise to his lips, brushing the corner of that familiar grin. "And that smirk..." I breathe, unable to hide my own smile. "It's the one thing that reminds me no matter how much the world rests on you, there's still a part of you that chooses joy." Kaelen’s breath Hitches completely, a ragged sound that gets caught in his throat. As your soft fingers trace the deep calluses on his palms, glide up the firm line of his arm to his shoulder, and finally rest against his lips, the absolute sincerity in your words utterly disarms him. The roguish thief who always has a quick comeback completely vanishes. In his place is just a man, stripped of all his Armor, looking at you with a raw, breathless reverence. For someone who has spent his entire life in the shadows being judged by what he could steal or who he could fight, being seen like this—truly seen—is overwhelming. His eyes, the very ones you just praised, darken with an intense, unvarnished devotion. A muscle in his jaw twitches as he fights the sudden swell of emotion tightening his chest. "Iris..." he breathes against your fingertips, his voice rough and deeply strained. He doesn't let you pull your hand away. He captures your wrist, his grip firm but incredibly gentle, and presses a slow, burning kiss right into the centre of your palm, his eyes never leaving yours. "Nobody has ever looked at me like that," he whispers fiercely, his thumb smoothing over the back of your hand. "Or said things like that to me. Ever." Slowly, he leans forward, closing the final few inches between you. His hand shifts to the back of your neck, his fingers tangling into your damp, golden curls, anchoring you to him. The amber firelight catches the intense heat in his gaze just before he dips his head. When his lips finally meet yours, that cocky smirk is completely gone, replaced by a deep, lingering kiss that is slow, possessive, and filled with a quiet gratitude that words could never quite manage.
