Chapter 4

He leaps from the fracturing ledge of the pillar down to the cavern floor, pulling you right along with him. You land hard but keep your footing, your boots skidding on the wet stone. Hand in hand, you bolt across the cavern toward the narrow, pitch-black tunnel you came from. Behind you, the obsidian serpent rears up to its full, terrifying height, realizing its prey is escaping. It lunges forward, its massive jaws snapping shut just inches behind your swirling cloak. You dive headfirst into the snug, rocky opening of the corridor. Kaelen tumbles in right behind you, his broad frame effectively blocking the entrance. A split second later, the serpent’s massive snout slams violently into the rock face outside with a resounding CRASH, sealing you both safely inside the narrow tunnel. The beast lets out a muffled, frustrated hiss, unable to squeeze its massive bulk into the tight space. Safe in the pitch blackness, you both collapse against the damp stone walls, completely spent. The only sound is the heavy, synchronized rushing of your breath. In the dark, you feel Kaelen's hand find yours again. He squeezes it gently, his thumb tracing the back of your hand. "See?" his deep voice echoes softly in the tight space, rich with a breathless, triumphant warmth. "I told you I'd keep those pretty grey eyes open. We got it back, apothecary." "Thank you," you whisper into the heavy darkness. The words feel small compared to everything that just happened, but they carry the weight of a truth you've finally allowed yourself to accept. You squeeze his hand tighter, letting down your guard just enough to let him feel it, secretly hoping with everything you have that he won't let go. For a heartbeat, the tunnel is completely still, save for the distant, muffled thuds of the frustrated serpent outside. Then, Kaelen's grip tightens in response. He doesn't pull away. Instead, you hear the soft rustle of his leather gear as he shifts closer to you in the pitch black. The heat radiating from his body cuts right through the damp chill of the cave. His large, calloused thumb gently strokes the back of your hand, a reassuring, rhythmic motion that makes your chest ache in a completely different way. "You don't have to thank me, Iris," he murmurs, his voice dropping to a low, velvety register that feels incredibly intimate in the tight space. "You saved my skin back there just as much as I saved yours. Maybe more." He leans in closer, his shoulder pressing firmly against yours. Even though you can't see a thing, you can feel his breath warm against your cheek. "I'm not letting go," he adds softly, answering the unspoken plea in your touch. "Not until we're out of the dark. And maybe not even then." He lets out a soft, contented breath, the tension finally draining from his frame. You sit there together in the absolute blackness, hands locked, letting your racing hearts slow down as the pulsing golden light from the artefact subtly glows through the fabric of his vest, casting a faint, beautiful halo around the two of you. In the absolute privacy of the dark, you shift closer, the scent of rain, ozone, and smoke enveloping you. Guided by the warmth of his breath, you lean in and gently brush your lips ever so softly against his. It is light as a feather—a quiet, breathless acknowledgment of the line you’ve just crossed. Kaelen freezes, his entire body going rigid for a fraction of a second in sheer surprise. Then, a low, shaky breath escapes him, and his grip on your hand turns possessively tight. He leans into the touch, his lips parting slightly as if to deepen it, but you pull back just enough to whisper your reality check. "How are we getting out of here?" you murmur against his lips, your voice trembling slightly. "Everyone is still out there." A soft, frustrated groan vibrates in Kaelen's chest, though you can practically feel the arrogant smirk returning to his face in the dark. He reluctantly lets his lips drift from yours, though he keeps his forehead pressed gently against your own. "Cruel timing, gold-locks," he whispers, his voice thick and rough. He takes a deep breath, his professional thief brain clicking back into gear. "But you're right. The main floor is still full of drunk bandits, and they're going to notice the captain's key is missing eventually. Going back out the window we came in is too risky if they've started looking for me." He shifts, his hand sliding up your arm to gently squeeze your shoulder. "But I didn't pick this foundry by accident. There's an old drainage grate at the end of this tunnel that lets out right into the harbour docks. It’s tight, it’s filthy, and it’s going to be freezing... but it bypasses the tavern entirely." He stands up, pulling you smoothly to your feet along with him, his hand instantly finding yours again. "We squeeze through the grate, dive into the harbour, and we're free," Kaelen says, his moss-green eyes faintly catching the golden glimmer of the artefact in his vest. "Are you ready for one last swim, apothecary?" “Uhm… I can do many things Kaelen… but swimming is not one of them.” Kaelen stops dead in his tracks. In the pitch blackness of the tunnel, you can’t see his face, but the sudden, absolute silence from his side of the rock wall speaks volumes. "You can scale iron ladders like a ghost, slice open an obsidian serpent mid-slide, and jump off a monster's head into mid-air..." his voice starts, dripping with a mix of sheer disbelief and amusement. "...but you can't swim?" A soft chuckle echoes in the dark as he shakes his head. "Iris, you are an absolute enigma." He doesn't let go of your hand. Instead, he steps closer, his broad shoulders blocking out what little space is left in the tunnel, comforting you with his sheer presence. "Hey, look at me," he murmurs, his voice dropping into that low, reassuring register. He reaches up with his free hand, his warm fingers finding your jawline in the dark, tilting your face up toward where his eyes would be. "I told you I’m not letting you go, and I meant it. The harbour water is freezing, but the current near the drainage grate is sluggish. You won't have to swim a stroke." He leans down, his breath brushing your cheek. "You're going to hold onto my back. Wrap your arms tight around my neck and lock your legs around my waist—just like you did with the serpent, only hopefully with less thrashing. I’ll carry us both across the channel to the hidden skiff I left by the pier. All you have to do is hold your breath when we drop. Can you do that for me?" “Okay… I can do that.” "Good," Kaelen whispers, his hand lingering on your jaw for one last reassuring second before he turns to lead the way. "Just keep your eyes closed, hold your breath when I tell you, and let me do the heavy lifting." You move down the remainder of the pitch-black tunnel, your hand locked firmly in his until the air begins to shift. The stale, musky cave air gives way to the sharp, bracing scent of sea salt and rotting wood. A faint, grey light filters through a heavy iron drainage grate just ahead, reflecting off the murky water pooling at your boots. Through the rusted bars, you can see the dark, choppy waters of the harbour churning in the storm. The rain is still pouring outside, drumming a heavy rhythm against the stone. Kaelen steps up to the grate. He doesn't bother with a key this time—he braces his boots against the stone wall, grips the rusted iron bars with his massive hands, and pulls with a low, guttural growl of exertion. The corroded hinges snap with a dull crack, and he pushes the heavy grate outward, letting it plunge silently into the deep water below. The freezing wind hits you instantly, whipping your blonde hair across your face. Kaelen turns back to you, stepping right into your space. He turns his back to you and hooks his arms behind him. "Alright, gold-locks. Mount up. Secure your arms around my neck, and don't let go no matter how cold that water feels." You nod, swallowing the lump of anxiety in your throat. You step up, wrapping your arms tightly around his neck and locking your legs securely around his waist. He catches your thighs, securing you against him with an iron grip. Despite the freezing wind, his back is a solid wall of heat. He takes a deep, stabilizing breath, checking over his shoulder to lock his moss-green eyes with yours one last time. "Take a deep breath," Kaelen orders softly. "Three... two... one..." He dives. The world instantly turns into a shocking, silent void of icy black water. The cold hits you like a physical blow, threatening to knock the air right out of your lungs, but you squeeze your eyes shut and bury your face into the crook of his neck, holding onto him with everything you have. True to his word, Kaelen moves through the water like a predator in its element. His powerful legs kick rhythmically, driving both of your weights through the dark harbour current. You can feel the intense strain in his muscles as he fights the swell, keeping a steady, unwavering path. After what feels like a lifetime under the freezing surface, your heads break the water. You gasp for air, coughing slightly as the rain pelts your face. Kaelen is already pulling you toward the dark, wooden shadow of a small skiff hidden beneath the shelter of a dilapidated pier. With a powerful heave, he grabs the edge of the boat, helping you scramble over the slick gunwale first before hauling himself up right behind you. You collapse onto the floorboards of the rocking boat, shivering violently, your clothes soaked through. Kaelen drops down beside you, panting heavily, his hair plastered to his forehead. He doesn't even look at the boat's oars. He immediately reaches for you, pulling your freezing body against his chest to share his warmth, his hands rubbing your arms vigorously. Through the shivering, he looks down at you with a breathless, triumphant grin, reaching into his soaked vest to pull out the velvet box—completely intact, its golden light softly illuminating the rain around you. "We made it," he breathes, his voice shaking slightly from the cold but rich with victory. "We actually made it." Kaelen reaches into his tunic and pull out the velvet box placing it into your hand. “Are you going to show me what I risked my life getting for you?” The moment the lid clicks open, the biting chill of the harbour wind seems to lose its edge. Resting on the damp velvet is a stone unlike anything Kaelen has ever seen. It isn't a diamond or a common gem; it is a clear, glistening shard that looks as though it were carved from solid moonlight. Inside its smooth depths, iridescent ribbons of mother-of-pearl swirl and dance, reacting to your touch. The soft, golden-white glow it emits spreads over the wooden floorboards of the skiff, instantly washing away the shadows and casting a surreal, comforting warmth over both of you. Your shivering slows, and a gentle smile finally graces your lips. "It's a shard of fallen star," you whisper, the light reflecting beautifully in your grey eyes. "Passed down generations in my family." Kaelen stares at the stone, completely transfixed. The cynical, hardened thief who usually calculates the monetary value of every trinket is entirely gone. The celestial light catches the sharp angles of his face, softening his expression into one of pure wonder. "A fallen star..." he repeats softly, his voice barely a breath. He slowly lifts his eyes from the artefact to look at you. The golden glow illuminates the damp strands of your hair, making you look almost ethereal in the middle of the dark, stormy harbour. "It's beautiful, Iris," he says, and for the first time, you realize he isn't looking at the stone anymore. He's looking entirely at you. He reaches out, his large, warm hand covering yours as you hold the box. His thumb gently brushes against your knuckles, cementing the bond the two of you forged down in the dark. "No wonder you were willing to jump off a monster's head for it," he murmurs, a soft, genuine smile finally breaking through his awe. He leans in slightly closer, shielding you from the rain with his broad frame. "Your family has good taste. And I'm glad it's back where it belongs." He glances toward the open sea, where the storm is beginning to mist into a gentle fog. "Let's get you somewhere warm so you can tell me the rest of the story." "We can go to my Apothecary, it is warm and dry, and I might have some of my father’s old clothes you can change into." "The apothecary sounds perfect," Kaelen says, the tension completely leaving his shoulders as he gives your hand one final, lingering squeeze. He reluctantly pulls away to grab the wooden oars, locking them into the rowlocks with practiced, quiet efficiency. With powerful, rhythmic strokes, he guides the small skiff out from under the shadows of the dilapidated pier and into the open water of the harbour. The heavy rain is finally tapering off, giving way to a thick, quiet sea fog that perfectly masks your escape from the foundry docks. Within twenty minutes, the skiff glides silently against the hidden stone steps leading up to the back entrance of your shop.
