CHAPTER TWENTY TWO Daniel stood at the door to his mother’s hospital room. He had been standing there for five minutes, and he still hadn’t summoned the courage to enter. Hospital staff passed back and forth, and the nurse at the counter down the hall had begun to give him curious looks. Come on. Get this done. Taking a deep breath, he knocked on the door. “Come in,” his mother called. It stung him to hear how weak she sounded. Stung him and surprised him. Since when had he cared how she felt? He entered to find her lying much as she had before. Her color had improved, though, and they had taken the IV drip away. “How are you feeling?” he asked. “What a mundane question.
