chapter 6

Back in the dungeon, my mind was racing. Three days—I had only three days. I couldn't just sit here and wait for death.  Laila growled anxiously within me. "What shall we do? Force our way out?"  "No, we're no match for them. We must use our wits." I soothed her.  I began meticulously recalling every detail from my past life, searching for a way out!  The Blackstone Clan, Alpha Kaden, Selina... What else?  Suddenly, a name flashed through my mind.  The Redwood Pack.  Neighbours of the Blackstone Pack, and our sworn enemies. The two packs had fought for decades over a stretch of silver-rich land along the border.  After my death in my previous life, I heard that the Blackstone and Redwood Packs had erupted into all-out war!  The Blackstone Pack suffered heavy losses, and Alpha Kaden was gravely wounded, nearly losing his life.  The spark that ignited that war, it seemed... was the discovery that Blackstone had been conducting secret dealings with human hunters!  In the world of werewolves, collaborating with humans—especially hunters who prey on our kind—  is an absolute taboo. It constitutes a betrayal of the entire werewolf race, a crime ten thousand times more grave than poisoning the Sacred Spring.  If I could find evidence proving Alpha Kaiden's collusion with human hunters...  My heart began to race. It was an exceedingly perilous plan, yet my sole hope.  I need an accomplice. Someone who can leave the dungeon and relay my messages.  Lila came to mind—my timid yet kind-hearted roommate.  I began to devise a plan. First, I must escape this dungeon.  I feigned a breakdown from despair, screaming in my cell and banging my head against the wall!  The guards ignored me at first, but when my head was bloodied and bruised, they finally opened the cell door with impatience.  "What's all this racket! If you want to die, do it yourself! Don't bother us!" one guard shoved me roughly.  The instant he drew near, I summoned every ounce of strength and thrust a sharp stone concealed in my sleeve towards his eye!  He let out a bloodcurdling scream, clutching his eye as he collapsed to the floor!  The other guard froze in shock. Seizing the moment, I bolted through the cell door like a bolt of lightning.  The alarm blared throughout the dungeon.  I knew I couldn't get far. My goal wasn't escape, but to create chaos and reach a place I had to go—the tribal doctor's pharmacy.  Guided by memory, I raced through the labyrinthine passages. Behind me came the clatter of footsteps and angry shouts.  I kicked open the apothecary's door and began frantically rummaging through its contents!  In my previous life, I had heard the tribal doctor mention a special herb!  It could temporarily mask and suppress a werewolf's scent, often used to evade pursuit.  Finally, I found it tucked away in a corner. I grabbed a handful and stuffed it into my mouth. The bitter taste nearly made me retch.  Suppressing the nausea, I chewed it to a pulp and swallowed it!  Soon, I felt Laila's scent begin to fade, and our connection grew hazy.  Having done this, I leapt from the apothecary's window and vanished into the night.
