Evidence

Elena's POV I didn't sleep. Twenty-four hours until Vanessa made good on her threat. Twenty-four hours before I disappeared. Counting down like bullets. My hand drifted to my stomach. Five months gone. The baby moved. Mrs. Alvarez found me in uniform before dawn. "You look like death." "I feel like it." She assigned me breakfast service. Adrian was at the table, papers everywhere. He didn't look up. "Coffee. Black." I set it down the way I'd learned cup to the right, handle toward him. His hand moved to it automatically, like the placement mattered, and for a moment his eyes went distant. Like he was remembering something he couldn't name. He looked at me. Really looked. "Thank you," he said. I held his gaze too long, then moved. "Wait. What's your name?" "Eleanor, sir." "Eleanor." He tested the word. "You've been here two weeks?" "Yes, sir." "You're good at this. Better than the others." I didn't answer. Just left, feeling his eyes track me out. Daniel arrived mid-morning, his voice low in the hallway. I stayed at the table, listening. "Visitor log from the night of the crash. Two entries. 8:15 p.m. and 11:47 p.m." "Two?" Adrian's voice sharpened. "Who signed in at 8:15?" "Could be Elena. Could be anyone. Second's definitely Vanessa." Silence. "Vanessa wasn't first." "The first visitor got there three and a half hours before her. That's not nothing, Adrian." "Check the hospital records. Find out who donated blood that night. Find out who stayed in the ICU while I was unconscious." "Give me two days." Two days. I had eight hours. My hands shook. If Adrian found out I was there if he knew I'd stayed beside him, given blood to save his life, he'd understand why I came back. I moved the second Daniel headed for the kitchen. Adrian's desk was chaos. Drawer after drawer. My hands shook. Listen for footsteps. Open. Check. Close. Bank transfer in "Legal." $50,000 to Vanessa Carter. Dated 48 hours after the crash. Mechanic's file in "Property Maintenance." Retirement package. Signed NDA. Paid to disappear. No visitor log. Panic hit. Had Vanessa taken it? Last drawer. Under a leather blotter. A photocopied page. Two entries. The first was my handwriting from five years ago. Elena Carter. The truth hit like a fist. I hadn't abandoned him. I'd donated blood. I'd stayed in that ICU while machines kept him alive. Then he woke up and Vanessa was there, claiming she'd saved him. He believed her because he wanted to. She'd stolen five years and built his love for her on blood that wasn't hers. I'd written him a letter before I left, begging him to understand what really happened. He never read it. Vanessa found it first. Footsteps. Close. I photographed. Three shots. Killed the flash. Slid the page back. Locked the study. Key in the pantry. Thirty seconds to spare. My phone burned in my pocket. Down the corridor, Vanessa stood at the other end, smiling. The real smile. "Eleanor," she said, stepping toward me. "Such a pretty name for such a useful ghost." "I saw you come out of Adrian's study. Hair messy. Hands shaking. Very interesting." She stopped inches from my face. Her perfume made me want to vomit. "What did you find?" "Nothing." She laughed. "You're a terrible liar. Still. After all these years." Her hand shot out and grabbed my wrist. Hard enough that I felt the threat. Hard enough that the baby shifted inside me, sensing danger. "Adrian's in his office. I'm about to tell him something that changes everything." My stomach dropped. "What?" "That the maid's been stealing. That I found you in his study going through his files. That you've been selling information to competitors." Her smile widened. The same smile from five years ago when I begged her to tell him the truth. "Who do you think he'll believe, Elena? The woman he married and threw away? Or the woman he chose?" She released me, smoothing her hair. "I already showed him your phone location from this morning. Timestamp proves you were in that study while he was in the kitchen with Daniel. By the time you get upstairs, he's already decided who you are." She walked past me toward the master bedroom. I stood frozen. Not just framed. She'd predicted how I'd react. Knew I'd panic. Knew I'd try to get the photos. Knew Adrian's paranoia would make him believe her. She'd already won. And I was carrying his child. Mrs. Alvarez called my name from the servants' entrance. Urgent. Terrified. I turned and saw her face pale, eyes wide with pity. "Don't go upstairs," she whispered. "Why?" "Vanessa just went in to Adrian with your phone. She told him to check the photos, said you were taking pictures of his documents to give to his competitors." Mrs. Alvarez's voice broke. "Elena, she said you've been working with his business rivals." My heart skipped. I pulled out my phone to check. It was gone. "Adrian has it," Mrs. Alvarez said quietly. "He took it from her hands and went straight to his study. He looked like he was going to kill someone." I heard his footsteps above us. Heavy. Furious. Moving toward the study where the visitor log sat under the blotter. Where the proof was. He was about to find it before I could explain. And Vanessa was right behind him, spinning the story. Telling him the photos were fabricated. Suggesting I'd stolen the document. The study door opened. Adrian's voice cut through the house. "ELEANOR." Not a question. Not anger. Something worse, the controlled fury of a man who felt betrayed. I had seconds. Mrs. Alvarez grabbed my arm. "The back stairs. Now. If he finds you before that document, he'll believe her." "I can explain." "Not to him. Not like this. You have to run." The footsteps got louder. He was coming down the staircase. "If you disappear, he'll search for answers. He'll open that drawer. He'll see his handwriting on the visitor log. He'll remember that night." Mrs. Alvarez pulled me toward the servants' corridor. "But if he catches you here, Vanessa wins. He'll arrest you for theft. For espionage." "She's lying." "I know. But he doesn't yet." I heard him hit the bottom of the stairs. His voice calling for me, sharp as a blade. And I understood. Mrs. Alvarez was right. If I ran, Adrian would question everything. He'd search the study out of rage, looking for evidence of my betrayal. He'd find the visitor log. He'd see my name in my own handwriting. And he'd realize Vanessa had lied about everything. If I stayed, I'd be arrested before the truth mattered. "Go," Mrs. Alvarez whispered, pushing me toward the back stairs. I went. Behind me, Adrian's voice boomed through the hallway. "Where is she? WHERE IS ELEANOR?" Ahead of me, the back door clicked closed. The November wind erased my footprints. I was running toward nowhere with his child inside me and the proof of his first love's betrayal burning in his study, waiting for him to see it. Everything was about to explode.
