Chapter 6

CASSIE’S POV The car was black and long and cleaner than anything I’d ever been inside. The leather seats were soft in a way that made me feel like I shouldn't be touching them. I sat in the back with my hands folded in my lap and watched the familiar streets of the pack slowly give way to wider roads, taller fences and the kind of greenery that only existed on the wealthier side of the territory. Smalls drove without talking, which I appreciated because right now, I was nervous as hell. If I had a wolf, she’d probably be pacing inside me right now. I had so many questions going on in my head. What did the princes want with me? Did they want to punish me or make fun of me? The thought of it all made my heart race even more. Smalls had the radio on low. It was something instrumental, nothing I recognized. He hummed along under his breath. I found it oddly comforting. Then the mansion came into view. My mouth opened as soon as I saw it. I had seen large houses before. The alpha's estate was impressive. I mean, the place had wide iron gates, manicured grounds, a building that announced power without trying to hide it. But this? This was something else entirely. The Leviathan brothers' mansion stood at the end of a long stone driveway lined with really tall trees. The building itself was white stone and dark glass. There were fountains…..actual fountains as in plural, placed symmetrically across the front grounds. Smalls parked at the entrance then came around to open my door. I stepped out and stood there for a moment, looking up. “Thank you, sir” I murmured, still distracted by the view in front of me. I felt it then - that familiar sensation I’d been running from my whole life. I guess it was the awareness of everything I wasn’t - the wolflessness, the uniform that didn't fit right, the secondhand shoes, the fact that I’d eaten dry bread for breakfast because my mother and I were managing the last of last week's money. All of it rose to the surface at once. In that moment, I heard a voice in my head saying: You don't belong here. "This way," Smalls said gently, and I followed him inside. The inside was warmer than I expected. I wasn't sure what I’d been bracing for but the interior of the mansion felt lived-in in a strange way. There were instruments in the hallway. I noticed an acoustic guitar leaning against a wall. There was sheet music on a side table. I also saw three pairs of shoes left by the staircase in a way that looked like someone had just kicked them off without thinking about it. It felt…..like a home. Smalls led me through to a large sitting room where sunlight was coming in through floor-to-ceiling windows. There was a couch arranged in a U-shape, a coffee table with drinks already set out, and- Three of them. They were standing when I walked in, which surprised me. I hadn't expected them to stand. People with power didn't usually stand for people like me. But there they were. I’d seen them at school the day before. I’d registered in some stunned, overwhelmed part of my brain that they were attractive – I mean, everyone knew them, they were a popular rock band. But that had been in the middle of a crowd with adrenaline coursing through me and Kenny's voice still ringing in my ears. Standing here now, in this quiet room, with nothing between them and my full attention - I had to work to keep my face still. They were freaking gorgeous. They were identical in the way that made your brain do a double take. They had the same height, same jaw, same broad shoulders, sharp cheekbones and hair that dark. Even though they looked a lot alike, you could tell their differences. The one on the left had his arms folded. He was watching me with calm eyes. He was the observant one. The one in the middle had a slight curve to his mouth. It wasn’t really a smile but close, like amusement came naturally to him. The one on the right was the still one. He hadn't moved since I walked in. His eyes were the most intense. He had this aura of power around him. I had the feeling that he had already sized me up completely in the three seconds since I'd entered the room. And over all three of them – besides the beauty - was something else entirely. Power. It wasn’t the kind that was shown off, not the kind that needed to be spoken. It was the kind you felt. I could feel it in the air. I felt it the second I stepped into the room. My breath hitched before I could stop it. My pulse picked up, faster, louder, like my body had recognized something before my mind could catch up. My wolf blood that was broken….stirred. But this time it didn’t just stir. It reached. I was just probably imagining things. I ignored it. "You came," said the one in the middle. His voice sounded surprised, like he'd genuinely been prepared for me not to show. "I came," I said. I stayed standing near the entrance. "I haven't agreed to anything yet. I don’t know why I’m here though" He smiled at that. It was a real one this time. "Fair enough. Please, sit down. We'll talk." We all sat on the couches. Smalls disappeared silently somewhere behind me. The one on the left leaned forward. "I'm Bastian," he said. "This is Rhys." He gestured to the one in the middle. "And that's Cael." The still one on the right nodded slightly in acknowledgment. The sight of them made my heart beat much faster. My heart was so loud that I was scared they would hear it. "Cassie," I said, though they clearly already knew that. "We know," Rhys said. "Smalls is thorough." "How much do you know about us?" Bastian asked. I was a bit shocked by his questions. "You're the Lycan princes," I said. "King Aldric's sons. And apparently-" I hesitated slightly, feeling a little absurd saying it out loud, "-you're the Leviathan brothers." Rhys grinned. "The band thing bothers people sometimes. They don't know which one to lead with." "It doesn't bother me," I shrugged "I just didn't expect both to be true at the same time." "Most things worth being are complicated," Cael said. It was the first thing he'd said since I walked in. His voice was low and deep. For some reason, his voice sent shivers down my spine. I looked at him for a moment. He looked back. I turned back to Bastian, trying to steady my fast beating heart. "You said you had a proposal," I said. "What is it?"
