Chapter 5 Anastasia POV Everything happening felt like a dream to me. A few minutes ago, I had been rejected by my supposed mate, and suddenly, a man I had no idea who he was had proposed to me. And not just that, he would be coming tomorrow to officially marry me. Was this a dream? I recalled my stepfather calling him “Your Majesty.” Coupled with the guards who had escorted him, I knew he was royalty. “Evans, tell me it isn’t true!” My stepfather’s fiancée asked bewilderedly as she stepped into the living room. “Is it true that the mighty Alpha Lucien came asking for Anastasia’s hand in marriage?” What the bloody hell... Did she just mention the great Alpha Lucien? The Alpha of Alphas? The one I had read about in magazines and even heard our villagers gossiping about? The one whose name was on the lips of every girl in college? Hell no! “Take your things back to your room, Anastasia,” my stepfather commanded me. Without sparing a second, I grabbed my things and hurried upstairs, as though I was afraid my stepfather would change his mind. For once, I was happy that things had taken such a surprising turn. Otherwise, by now, I would have been on the street, preparing to spend the night in the open air. I entered my room, slammed the door, and rested my back against it, breathing heavily. How did Alpha Lucien come here? I mused. Was it fate? Of course not. Why had he suddenly decided to marry me? And damn it, how could I even marry a man who didn’t even care to ask for my opinion? What if I wasn’t even interested in marrying him? Then I remembered the debt. He was marrying me in exchange for the debt my stepfather owed him. That clearly meant that he didn’t love me. How could I survive such a marriage? Thought after thought raced through my mind, and I was beginning to lose it. Just then, the door opened and my stepfather’s fiancée walked in. "I just came to remind you that you shouldn't be too excited about Alpha Lucien’s proposal," she said with a smirk, folding her arms across her chest. I blinked. "Alpha Lucien is someone everybody prays not to cross paths with, let alone live under the same roof as," she continued. I swallowed hard, dread already creeping into me. "He’s a beast. An animal. The equal of the devil," she snarled. "I guess you’re just so unlucky. Happy wedded life in advance," she added with a disparaging smile and walked out. My heart pounded. That explains all the stories I’ve heard about him. He’s not nice, and I still can’t tell why fate was trying to bring us together. I seriously can’t afford to get married to Alpha Lucien. I can’t live under the same roof as someone with no kindness attached to his name. I needed to go tell my stepfather that I couldn’t get married to Alpha Lucien. He wanted to throw me out of his house. I guess that would be better than marrying the beast. With that, I moved to the door, pulled the handle, and froze at who I saw standing by the door. Prince Octave. What the bloody hell was he doing here?! "I know you’re surprised to see me," he said slowly. "I didn’t even believe anything would bring me here," he added. He just rejected me barely an hour ago. What on earth brought him here? “News reached my father, your Alpha,” he said, placing both hands behind his back. “That you are my fated mate and that I rejected you. He became furious and instructed me to come and get you back. I don’t know his reason, but that’s not even what brought me here.” He paused and walked closer to me. “He gave me an ultimatum: marry you or lose my heirship.” I blinked twice in disbelief. “I just can’t tell why he wants you, but that should be beside the point. We’re getting married tomorrow. But listen to me, don’t start feeling special. I don’t love you, and I can never love someone like you.” His voice was like a whip. “I’m sorry, my Prince, but she can’t marry you,” my stepfather chimed in. I hadn’t even known he was standing beside us. Prince Octave was taken aback. “Why?” “She’s already been claimed,” he told him. “That’s not possible,” Octave said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Well, that’s the situation now,” my stepfather replied. “Whoever it is that has taken her, tell him to back off,” Octave said coldly. “Well, he’s not someone I can tell that s**t to,” my stepfather replied. “Tell him,” Octave ordered before turning to leave. “She’ll be getting married to him tomorrow,” my stepfather added, goosebumps appearing on his skin. Prince Octave stopped in his tracks. “Then blood will flow!” he said. “I’ll make sure blood flows tomorrow if that marriage continues.” My heart pounded as his threat echoed through the hall. Prince Octave turned around, his eyes burning with rage. For the first time, I realised this wasn't merely about marriage anymore. Two powerful men were ready to fight over me, and somehow, I was standing directly between them.
