I LIVE IN A WALL
MODERN
IMAGINATION
IS THIS SCIENTIST DEAD OR HAS SHE FINALLY LOST IT?
CHAPTER 1
Slamming the door, Dora turned to face her mother.
“What is for dinner, Dina?”
Dina sighed at her daughter’s behavior; she could not wrap her mind around the fact that her own daughter blamed her for her husband’s death.
“You just came back from work, at least Good day would have been more appropriate, don’t you think?” she tried to reason.
“Yeah sure, whatever…so are you going to answer my question…” Dora sounded impatient.
“We are having Tuna.”
“What are we… cats...” Dora hissed, “I see why dad left now, he couldn’t stand this insufferable attitude of yours.” Giving her mother one last hard look, she crossed the Living room and opened the door leading to her room. Seeming to hesitate for a moment, she held on to the door but finally walked into the room and shut it.
All this time, Dina stood mute. She was astounded by the fact that she still found it surprising whenever Dora spoke to her like this. Shrugging her shoulders she set only one plate on the table, if her daughter was not going to support her then she would just do so herself.
It was almost midnight when a shadow crept besides Dina’s bed. Dora looked around searching for her mother’s car keys. She checked the drawers and the lamp stand but it was not there. Tired of searching, Dora turned to go back to her room, maybe it was the moonlight or she was just meant to find it but there sitting between the pages of a book lying besides her mother were the keys. Stepping forward to take it, Dora lost her footing and nearly slipped. Clutching the chair besides her, she froze as her mother moved on the bed. She prayed that her mother wouldn’t wake up, it would ruin everything. When nothing happened, she took a deep breath and speed walked towards the key. Grabbing it, she headed for the door without looking back, not bothering to see if her mother had woken up. The apartment that she lived in with her mother was so small and did not have any stairs so she just crossed the room and ran out of the house.
Finally outside, she took in a deep breath. The cool night breeze moved around her, everything seemed calm, Dora just wanted to be one with the night, she wanted to feel peace just this once but it wasn’t to be. An uncomfortable feeling settled in her stomach and tears rolled down her cheeks. Things had changed so quickly, she had lost everything; her dad, her house, her car, her boyfriend…everything, all in one week. Shaking her head, she decided that she was not going to focus on her woes tonight. Running to the car, she got in hurriedly, she would be happy, she would start all over. Starting the ignition, she stepped on the gas pedal and drove out of the drive way, disappearing into the night.
Dina stood staring through the kitchen window at the now empty driveway. She had seen her daughter, had wanted to stop her but felt that she needed a little time alone, she was twenty-five after all; she could take care of herself. Sighing she stepped away from the window and pulled herself to her room.
Speeding through Beeswoth hills, Dora cranked the music player up. It was a clear night and the road was empty…Dora felt safe; she couldn’t stay sad forever, moping around looking like a lost dog. Forgetting all about her problems and the road, she just drove and listened to the song that was playing. She drove like this for the next two hours when the car jerked and swerved off the road. Dora blinked and turned the steering wheel, trying to get control again. Thinking of what to do, Dora realized that she had made a wrong turn somewhere and was now sliding down a hill. Stepping on the gas, she tried to move forward but the car jerked again causing Dora to push the gear backwards. The tyres of the car slowly started moving backwards and Dora got a hold of the wheel again, trying to move forward. When nothing seemed to work, she turned around to see where the car was going. The car was heading straight for a wall and it was moving fast. It was going to crash and after that who knows what else… With her heart in her mouth, she brought her knees up to her head and braced herself for impact. The car kept moving and moving until it went into the wall. The night went silent, there was no music, no screeching…nothing. The hills were empty and the small town of Beeswoth slept in peace.
