Richard's POV
Richard did not go back inside the house. He sat in his car for twenty minutes, staring at the fountain. Then he called his grandmother.
Elizabeth answered on the third ring. "Richard."
"Grandmother, I need to tell you something."
"I already know," she said. Her voice was tired. "Emmanuel called me. They took Sylvia in for questioning."
"Did you know?" Richard asked. "About her arrangement with Cosimo?"
There was a long silence. Then Elizabeth said, "Yes."
Richard closed his eyes. "How long?"
"Twenty years. Maybe more. I suspected long before I had proof."
"And you said nothing."
"I thought I could contain it," Elizabeth said. "I thought if I kept her close, if I watched her carefully, I could prevent more damage. I was wrong."
