Chapter 25 Mother's Voice

871 Words

Evelyn's POV I opened the envelope at two in the morning. Everyone else was asleep. The house was the kind of quiet that only comes very late at night, when even the street outside has stopped moving. I sat on the edge of the bed in the small back room and peeled the envelope open carefully. There was no letter inside. There was a small rectangular cassette tape, the old kind, with a paper label on the front. The label had two words on it written in blue ink: For you. The adapter. A small plastic piece that would allow the cassette to play in a modern device. I sat with it in my hands for a while. Then I got up, went down the hallway, and knocked softly on Samuel's door. He answered quickly. He had not been fully asleep. "Do you have equipment that can play a cassette?" I asked.
