The sea had no mercy, and the sun had no warmth. Elias sat at the edge of the life raft, his legs dangling over the side. The gray water lapped against the rubber, each wave a small reminder of how small they were, how insignificant. The other raft drifted nearby, its occupants huddled under a makeshift canopy of torn clothing and salvaged plastic. Some of the children were asleep. Others stared at the horizon, their eyes empty. It had been three days since the catamaran sank. Three days of drifting, with no land, no rescue, and no sign of the refuge the Architect had promised. The Guardian sat at the back of Elias's raft, its silver body tarnished by salt, its eyes dim. It had been silent for hours, conserving energy. But Elias knew it was still processing the Architect's final command
