Episode 1: The Night That Changed Everything

1040 Words
Lia Knox had always believed that danger was something that happened to other people. Not her. Not in her quiet, predictable life. But that belief shattered the moment she took the wrong turn. The night was colder than usual, the kind that seeped into your bones and made your instincts uneasy. Lia hugged her jacket tighter around herself as she walked faster, her heels clicking sharply against the pavement. She shouldn’t have stayed late at work. She shouldn’t have taken the shortcut. And she definitely shouldn’t have ignored the feeling that something was wrong. The street was too quiet. Too empty. Too… still. Lia slowed her steps, her heart beginning to pound as she glanced around. The streetlights flickered, casting long shadows that stretched unnaturally across the ground. “Okay… this is creepy,” she muttered under her breath, pulling out her phone. No signal. Of course. Her pulse quickened. Then she heard it. A sound. Low. Sharp. A gunshot. Lia froze. Her breath caught in her throat as the sound echoed through the alley nearby. Another shot followed. Then silence. A heavy, suffocating silence. Every instinct screamed at her to run. But curiosity… or maybe pure stupidity… pulled her forward. “Just look and go,” she whispered to herself. “Just make sure someone’s okay…” Her steps were slow now, cautious as she moved toward the alley. The darkness there felt different—thicker, heavier, like it was hiding something. Something dangerous. Lia peeked around the corner. And everything stopped. A man lay on the ground. Blood pooled beneath him, dark and spreading. And standing over him— Was another man. Tall. Broad. Deadly. He held a gun loosely in one hand, his posture relaxed as if what he had just done meant nothing. Lia’s breath hitched. Her eyes widened. No. No, no, no— This couldn’t be real. But then the man turned. And their eyes met. Time froze. Lia felt it—that instant shift in the air. The moment he saw her. Dark eyes locked onto hers, sharp and unyielding. Cold. Terrifying. Powerful. She couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t move. Couldn’t think. And then reality slammed into her. Run. Lia turned and bolted. Her heels clattered loudly against the pavement as panic took over her body. Her heart raced wildly, her breaths coming out in sharp gasps. Oh my God. Oh my God. He saw her. She had seen his face. She had seen everything. And now— He was coming after her. She didn’t need to look back to know. She could feel it. The presence. The danger. The certainty that she had just stepped into something she couldn’t escape. “Help—!” she tried to scream, but her voice came out weak, broken. Her lungs burned as she ran faster, turning corners blindly, desperate to lose him. But then— A hand grabbed her. Lia gasped as she was yanked back hard, her body slamming into something solid. A wall. No— A chest. Warm. Unmoving. Dangerous. Her breath caught as a strong arm wrapped around her, trapping her completely. “Running already?” The voice was low. Calm. Deadly. Lia’s entire body froze. Slowly… painfully slowly… she looked up. And there he was. The man from the alley. Up close, he was even more terrifying. Sharp jawline. Dark, unreadable eyes. A presence that filled the space around him like he owned it. Like he owned everything. Including her. Lia swallowed hard, her voice trembling. “P-please… I didn’t see anything—” A lie. And they both knew it. His lips curved slightly—not a smile, but something darker. “You saw everything.” Her heart dropped. “I swear I won’t tell anyone,” she rushed out, panic flooding her voice. “I didn’t mean to—I just—please, just let me go—” His grip tightened slightly. Not enough to hurt. But enough to remind her that she wasn’t going anywhere. “Let you go?” he repeated softly, almost amused. Lia’s stomach twisted. Something about the way he said it made her feel like she had just said the stupidest thing in the world. “Please…” she whispered. For a moment, he just stared at her. Studying her. Assessing. Calculating. And then he did something unexpected. He leaned closer. Lia’s breath hitched as his face moved inches from hers. She could feel his presence, overwhelming and suffocating. Danger wrapped in control. “Do you know what happens to people who see things they shouldn’t?” he murmured. Her heart pounded violently. She shook her head slowly. “I… I don’t—” “They disappear.” The words hit like a punch. Her vision blurred slightly as fear flooded her system. No. This couldn’t be happening. Not to her. Not like this. “Please…” she whispered again, her voice barely there. But instead of responding immediately, his gaze lingered on her face. On her eyes. Her lips. Something shifted. Subtle. Dangerous. Different. “Interesting,” he muttered. Lia frowned slightly, confusion mixing with fear. “What?” But he didn’t answer. Instead, his grip on her tightened just enough to make her pulse spike again. “I should kill you,” he said calmly. Her breath stopped. “But…” Her heart pounded louder. “But what?” His eyes darkened slightly as he looked at her again, more intensely this time. “As much as I don’t tolerate witnesses…” His voice dropped lower. “…I don’t feel like letting you go.” Lia’s stomach dropped. “What does that mean?” she asked, her voice trembling. For a moment, he said nothing. Then— He smirked. Slow. Dangerous. Possessive. “You saw something you shouldn’t have…” His grip tightened. “And now—” He leaned closer, his voice brushing against her ear. “—you belong to me.” Lia’s world stopped. Her breath caught. Her heart pounded violently. No. No, this couldn’t be real. But the way he held her… The way he looked at her… The way his words wrapped around her like chains… Told her one thing. She wasn’t escaping this. Not tonight. Not ever.
