Chapter 6: The Price of Defiance

The silence in Adrian's office lingered long after Viktor placed the silver coin on the desk. Lia's eyes remained fixed on Adrian's face. It was the first genuine emotion she had seen from him since the night they met. His calm exterior hadn't disappeared, but something colder had taken its place. Rage. Controlled. Calculated. Dangerous. "What is that?" Lia asked again, unable to hide her curiosity. Adrian slowly closed his hand around the coin. "It doesn't concern you." "It clearly does." He looked at her, his expression unreadable. "It concerns everyone under this roof." Viktor stepped forward. "The guards have doubled security around the estate." Adrian nodded. "No one enters or leaves without my permission." "Already done." Lia folded her arms. "Would someone please tell me what's happening?" Neither man answered. Her patience snapped. "I'm tired of everyone treating me like I don't deserve answers!" Adrian finally spoke. "The man we caught carried the symbol of an organization I buried years ago." "What organization?" "My enemies." "You seem to have a lot of those." A faint smile appeared on Adrian's lips. "It comes with power." Lia rolled her eyes. "So mysterious." His smile disappeared just as quickly. "This isn't a joke." "I know." "Then stop acting like it is." She sighed loudly. "Fine. Explain it." Adrian exchanged a brief glance with Viktor before walking toward the fireplace. "The man I killed the night we met wasn't just another criminal." Lia listened carefully. "He betrayed the Volkov family." "So?" "He was working with another syndicate." "And now they're after you." "No." His voice grew quieter. "They're after something they believe I have." Lia frowned. "What?" His eyes met hers. "They think it's you." The room fell silent. Lia stared at him. "What?" "It doesn't make any sense." "It doesn't." "I've never met these people." "I know." "Then why would they want me?" Adrian remained silent. "I don't have that answer yet." Her stomach tightened. For the first time, she realized Adrian truly didn't know everything. Hours later... Lia stood alone in the library. It was the first room she'd discovered without guards watching every movement. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, filled with books older than she was. She slowly walked between them, running her fingers along the spines. "So," she whispered to herself. "This is where you hide." For a moment, everything felt normal. Almost peaceful. Until she noticed a photograph sitting on one of the shelves. She picked it up. A much younger Adrian stood beside an older man. Both wore black suits. Neither smiled. Their resemblance was unmistakable. Father and son. Another woman stood beside them. Beautiful. Elegant. Her smile warm enough to soften the coldness surrounding Adrian. Lia had never seen him smile. She wondered if he ever had. "You found it." Lia nearly dropped the frame. She turned to find Adrian standing quietly in the doorway. "I didn't hear you." "You weren't supposed to." She looked back at the photograph. "Your family?" He nodded once. "My parents." "What happened to them?" A long silence followed. "My mother died when I was sixteen." "I'm sorry." "My father was murdered two years later." Lia's eyes widened. "Murdered?" He nodded again. "I inherited everything after that." "The empire." "The enemies." "The responsibility." She carefully placed the photograph back where she'd found it. "So you never really had a choice." Adrian looked surprised. "No one has ever said that before." "They probably didn't care." "They didn't." Another silence settled between them. Different this time. Less hostile. More... human. Lia hated admitting it. But for just a second... She almost felt sorry for him. That evening... Maria served dinner in an enormous dining room. The table was long enough to seat twenty people. Only two chairs were occupied. Lia picked at her food. Adrian barely touched his. "You should eat," he said. "You first." "I already have." She glanced at his untouched plate. "You're a terrible liar." A corner of his mouth lifted. "So are you." "I never said I was hungry." "You haven't stopped looking at the bread." Her cheeks warmed. "I wasn't." "You were." She looked away. "I hate that you notice everything." "It's my job." "What exactly is your job?" He answered without hesitation. "Keeping this family alive." "And now I'm part of your family?" His fork stopped midway. "No." "Then what am I?" His dark eyes met hers. "That's what I'm still trying to figure out." His honesty caught her off guard. Before she could respond, alarms suddenly echoed throughout the mansion. Red emergency lights flashed across the walls. Viktor burst into the dining room. "Boss!" Adrian was already on his feet. "What happened?" "Perimeter breach." Lia's heartbeat quickened. "They're inside the estate." Adrian's expression hardened instantly. He turned toward Lia. "Stay here." "No." "Lia." "I'm not hiding while people are trying to kill me!" "They're not after you." She stared at him. "You literally said they think you have me." "I did." "Then they're absolutely after me!" For a split second... Adrian had no argument. He stepped toward her instead. "So stay behind me." His words came out as an order. Not a request. Gunfire suddenly echoed outside. One shot. Then another. The mansion erupted into chaos. Guards rushed through the corridors. Shouting filled the air. Viktor drew his weapon. "They've reached the east wing!" Adrian's gaze never left Lia. "No matter what happens..." His voice was calm despite the chaos surrounding them. "...don't leave my side." Lia swallowed hard. For the first time since she had been kidnapped... She wasn't afraid of Adrian Volkov. She was afraid of the people coming for him. And as another gunshot shattered the silence... She realized the war had finally reached the Volkov Estate.
