Elara pov
After taking the day off, I spent most of my time trying to clear my head and figure out exactly what kind of game Chase Caruso was playing with me. The fact that he knew where I lived without me ever telling him was still eating at me, and it made me feel like I was being watched even when I was in the safety of my own bedroom. When I finally returned to the office, the tension in the air felt thicker than usual, and I could tell that the power dynamic between us had shifted into something far more dangerous. I found myself standing next to him in the elevator, with his actual secretary squeezed in beside us, and the silence was almost suffocating. I kept my eyes fixed on the numbers climbing on the display, trying my best to ignore the heat radiating from his body and the way he seemed to take up all the space in the small metal box.
Once the doors opened, we walked toward his office in a synchronized rhythm that felt far too intimate for my liking. As soon as we stepped inside, Chase didn't even look at me, instead turning his attention to the secretary and telling her to send over his schedule for the rest of the day. The secretary nodded quickly and hurried out, and Chase dismissed both of us with a casual wave of his hand, signaling that he had everything he needed for the moment. I didn't need to be told twice, and I turned around to make my exit as quickly as possible, wanting to get as far away from his presence as I could before I did something impulsive.
I had almost reached the door when his voice cut through the room, calling my name with a tone that made me stop dead in my tracks. I slowly turned back to face him, keeping my expression neutral and my posture professional, and I answered him respectfully, asking if there was something else he needed from me. He didn't answer immediately, which only made my anxiety spike as I watched him slowly push himself up from his leather chair. He began to walk toward me, his stride confident and predatory, and as he got closer, I felt an instinctive need to create distance between us.
I took a step back, then another, but he didn't stop his advance, continuing to close the gap until I felt the cold, hard surface of the wall pressing against my back. He didn't stop until he was inches away from me, effectively trapping me between his body and the wall. I could feel the warmth of his breath on my skin, and the proximity was so intense that I felt like the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. I tried to keep my breathing steady, but my heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, and I could tell he noticed the way my chest was heaving.
“You know, the first time I had offered that deal to you, I really thought you would jump on the offer without a second thought,” he said, his voice low and vibrating through my entire frame. “But you surprised me more than I could have ever imagined, Elara. You have a certain level of resistance that I find incredibly interesting.”
I couldn't even find the words to respond because I was struggling to breathe with him so close to me, his scent filling my senses and making my head spin. He reached up and took a single strand of my hair, twisting it slowly around his finger while his eyes searched mine for any sign of weakness. Before I could react, he shifted his hand to the back of my head, his fingers gripping my hair just enough to pull my face closer to his, forcing me to look directly into his eyes. The dominance in his gaze was overwhelming, and for a second, I forgot how to move or speak.
“What are you doing?” I asked, my voice sounding small and breathless as I tried to find a way to escape the situation. I shifted my weight, attempting to slide past him or push him away, but he was like a brick wall, immovable and solid. I opened my mouth to tell him that this was completely inappropriate, but before I could get a single word out, he crashed his lips against mine.
The kiss was sudden and aggressive, a complete takeover that left me reeling. I gasped into his mouth, the shock of it sending a jolt through my system, and I immediately brought my hands up to push against his chest. I tried to shove him back, my palms pressing into the expensive fabric of his suit, but he didn't budge an inch. Instead, he leaned further into me, deepening the kiss and claiming my mouth with a hunger that felt almost violent. He wasn't asking for permission; he was taking what he wanted, and the sheer intensity of it made my knees feel weak even as I fought against him.
When he finally let go, he didn't move away, leaving us both breathless and staring at each other in the heavy silence of the office. I was panting, my lips tingling from the force of the kiss, and I felt a mixture of anger and confusion swirling in my gut. I gave him one final, hard push, successfully creating a few inches of space between us, and I glared at him with all the frustration I had been bottling up since the day I met him.
“This is against our deal!” I snapped, my voice shaking with irritation. “We had an agreement about my work as a journalist, and this has absolutely nothing to do with that. You can't just decide to do whatever you want with me because you're the boss.”
Chase didn't look guilty or even remotely bothered by my outburst. Instead, he let out a low chuckle, a sound that felt mocking and arrogant. He stepped back just enough to give me room to breathe, but the smirk on his face told me he was enjoying the chaos he had just caused.
“Did it ever occur to you what kind of absurd deal that was in the first place?” he replied, his eyes glinting with amusement. “You signed a contract with me, Elara. You gave me a certain amount of control over your time and your life for a month. Did you really think that meant I would play by a set of rules that you created in your head?”
The sheer audacity of his words made my blood boil, and I felt a surge of defiance that outweighed my fear. I stood my ground, looking him straight in the eye, and told him that if he kept crossing the line and treating me like a toy, I would simply walk out of the deal and leave him to find someone else to document his life. I thought that threat would at least make him hesitate, but I had completely underestimated how much he enjoyed the challenge.
Chase’s smirk widened, and he leaned in one last time, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Then you should be very ready to pay the price for breaching that deal, Elara. Remember exactly what is at stake if you decide to walk away from me before the month is up. I don't take kindly to people who break their word, and I certainly don't let people leave my employment without settling their debts.”
The threat was clear and cold, reminding me of the leverage he held over me and the incident that had started this entire nightmare. I didn't stay to hear anything else, and I didn't give him the satisfaction of seeing me tremble. I turned on my heel and practically ran out of the office, my heels clicking rapidly against the floor as I hurried toward the elevator. My heart was still racing, and my lips still felt the ghost of his kiss, but all I could think about was how I had signed a deal with a man who didn't believe in boundaries and who viewed my resistance as nothing more than a game to be won.
