CHAPTER 8

Tristan's POV: "You're staring at me." Cody said. I shrugged. "I'm just thinking." He looked up from his laptop at me. "Thinking while staring at me? You're making me uncomfortable." He turned back to my laptop and continued to type up his report. I hovered over him, my eyes boring holes into the back of his head. It's a normal day at work. Really. It shouldn't be hard. He shows up to work, he does his duties while simultaneously working as a beta. And then he gets back to the pack house and rest up. I kept thinking he has been a loyal friend and a hardworking staff. Do I need to bother him with the current matter in my mind? "If you have something to say, please say it." He said. "I'm trying to work, and you're making it hard for me." "You're telling your boss he's making work hard for you?" I asked and tsked. "I should fire you right now." He looked up at me and sighed. "Please do. And I'll gladly walk out." "That's how much you hate working for me?" I asked, fake hurt in his eyes. "I'm so sad, I thought we were best friends." "Well that's..." I started to say and stopped. Over the large glass windows that overlooked the company below. I got to my feet and walked closer to the window. Right there, flanked on both sides by my twin sisters was Athena. “My mate." I whispered in a low tone. Almost forgetting that Cody was with me. He turned to me with a serious expression. "She's your mate?" “That how I feel, but she doesn't feel nothing." I turned back to the window. I noticed how Athena stayed close to the twins, her arm looked with Morrigan's. I remembered the state I had found her in, battered and half dead. Now she looked better, her white hair no longer looked like it was sickly and she had more life in her eyes. She didn't feel the mate bond. Her wolf was suppressed. Dane went wild inside of me, and even now he's silently judging me for not doing anything. But Dane is but a wolf. He doesn't understand human emotions. “How is that even possible." Cody's asked still looking confused. “I'm in love with Victoria. She's the one I have my sights set on, and I'm pretty sure she feels the same way for me too. This… Athena came in and she's causing this distraction.” “It's only been a few days, not even up to a week yet.” Cody observed. Milena looked up and spotted us. She waved at me, her face full of smiles. I waved back. Athena looked at me. Even across the distance I could see how bright and how blue her eyes were. She waved shyly, and I waved back. "They're coming up here," Cody said. "Oh please no! I have a deadline to meet!" He groaned in exasperation. I shrugged. "Come on Cody, lighten up. They won't stay for long." “I don't want any disturbance." He snapped. I rubbed my temples. It's so early in the morning and yet I'm sure that I'm feeling a headache already. This early in the morning. A knock sounded on the door and it opened. So fast, I was about to say. But then Victoria walked in. She was dressed smartly in a dark blue pencil skirt and a white blouse, her hair tied at the nape of her neck. She held a pack of coffee in her hands. "Alpha Tristan, Cody, good morning." She said in greeting, a bright smile on her face. "Good morning Victoria." Cody replied. She walked up to him. "Black, just as you like." She handed him a cup and smiled. "Thank you," Cody replied. Victoria turned to me, and I felt my heart skip a beat. She's so beautiful, even in office wear she glows. "Hey," She said softly. "How are you?" She handed a cup over to me. "Vanilla iced latte" "Big brother!" A loud shout cut through the air. I was tackled to a hug, the cup of coffee raised high so it wouldn't spill. Morrigan and Milena hugged me, and I had gotten used to this by now. "It's still early," I said with a chuckle. My eyes drifted to Athena. She stood out of the way, a grin on her face as she watched the display. She looked at Cody briefly, and then at Victoria then back to the twins. I swear I can't understand her. You'd think she'd be easy to read, given how demure and plaint she is. But I can't tell what lies behind. Those blue eyes. She hadn't yet told us what happened or how she ended up on our borders. And for some reason I just hope she is alright. Victoria touched my arm and I turned to her. She had a small smile on her red lips. From the corner of my vision I saw Athena's eyes widen. Cody and the twins began to talked about something related to work. My attention was far from that. Athena looked worried. She bit her lower lip and her eyes tracked to Victoria again. "We still have a meeting slated for noon," Victoria said and made me turn to her. "With the Pavels," "Yes, that's right. Once it's time, I'll be sure to call you up." She nodded. "I'll see you later." She turned to Cody. "Have wonderful day, Cody" "You too Victoria!" She walked by Athena, Athena nodded and moved out of the way. "Alpha Tristan," Athena said, her attention turned to me. "Yes, Athena?" The twins moved to my side, still vibrating with excitement. "Can I....can I work here? To earn my keep." "No." Cody instantly blurted out. I didn't even know when I . "She asked..." "I wasn't talking to you," Athena said, her eyes snapping in my direction. "I was asking alpha Tristan." I felt my left eye twitch. Silence filled the air. Her expression was unreadable as she turned back to me. "Well," I started to say.
