March 17th, Dease LakeSean headed out of town on the unpaved Telegraph Creek Road. Travelling west for about 50 km, he spiraled down twenty percent grades and maneuvered around single lane hairpin turns with no guardrails. The going was rough. The usual potholes kept his attention focused on the road, but it was the frost heaves that made his progress slow. As the day warmed up, the road turned to mud. Sean switched his truck wheels to 4-wheel drive to help compensate for the slippery surface.
Reaching the turnoff that would lead him down into the Tuya Valley, Sean stopped to stretch his legs and take in the view. Far below, he could see where the Tuya River met the Stikine River. It was at this junction that he would follow the forestry road north though the valle
